    I bought a cottage in the Midlands 20 years ago as prices and rent crazy in Dublin. Literally spent 5 hours a day in a car up and down for work daily for 4 years , this at a time roads were Shite and no one knew what public transport was.

    Surely to God there are houses to rent within an hour of Dublin.

    No way I could have afforded to live where I grew up, just wasn't going to happen. Or if it did, I'd be like this caller living off scraps just to stay in a certain area.

    And that's with 2 kids, not 5.

    Her partner has finished an apprenticeship - that would suggest to me he could get a job literally anywhere in the country (assuming he has a trade).

    Why are people so obsessed with living within a few kms of their family etc. even to the detriment of their physical and mental health?

    Life these days needs a ton of forward thinking and planning. Conception, mortgage planning, sickness planning, pension planning being key.
