He's a bit special alright... I'll never forget the Luke Fitz commentary on Ireland-Italy that time, talk about making a bad match worse like!

The former eir Sport studio is owned by Premier Sports and, since the demise of eir, has appeared on Premier Sports programmes - that said, they tended to present Pro14 coverage from the ground.

As for the team, I think it’s the same as previous seasons, including Stephen Ferris and Andrew Trimble, not sure if they are bringing any Leinster/Munster/Connacht faces.

The “BT want out of sport” talk has reared its head again with DAZN (who made a bit of noise recently regarding their boxing coverage) apparently very interested in a takeover.

Their Serie A coverage has been very good so far. Enjoying the Sunday evening studio analysis.

Safe to say BT are charging too much for sport, was in a pub last weekend and they had the NBC/Peacock coverage of the soccer, the in-out nature of broadcasters will continue until their pricing is dealt with

They charge high because they pay high for FAPL rights. I think in BT’s case though, they had entered the market with a particular proposition (free sports with broadband subs) which simply proved unsustainable and given the inflation in Premier League rights (albeit paused, for the moment, due to Covid) was never likely to be sustainable. Once they had broken the sport-broadband link the rationale for BT to own BT Sport simply no longer was there. It’s a similar story for eir Sport. Unlike eir Sport, BT Sport might have a future as a standalone broadcaster or under another roof. Not sure if DAZN are that future though, the merged offering would likely have to be pitched at a much higher price than DAZN typically charge.

Be careful what you wish for with Dazn.

Charging €8 per month here just for boxing, and some of the cards are pretty poor.

They have been in Italy for a number of years, once they won the rights for Seria A, they increased the price up €30 a month.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,766 ✭✭✭lertsnim

So still cheaper than BT Sport. It's a given that prices would have to increase.

  • Registered Users Posts: 811 ✭✭✭Butson

How is it cheaper than BT sport? Currently paying €10 a month for a NOW TV pass that gets BT and Premier Sports.

European football is BTs biggest outgoing. They've only 1 PL package. The pay £375m a season for the PL and £400m a season for European football. Sky pay £1.2bn a season for the PL.

That's not the normal price though is it. Currently €10 for one month and then €34 per month after that.

A number of reports today that DAZN are in advanced talks now about buying BT Sport, stemming from an FT article this morning. So it looks like things are serious on the DAZN front, which is a very interesting one. I’d expect a merged DAZN-BT Sport to want to retail directly in this market and exit the wholesale agreement with Sky (which is up at the end of this season anyway) at the earliest possible opportunity, that could in turn have knock on effects for Premier Sports.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,229 ✭✭✭Red Silurian

So stop paying for the rights then if it isn't working

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,685 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

That’s exactly what they are doing.

(Or rather, trying to do, they need to get someone to take them off their hands which is proving to be a protracted process)

Italy is a bit of an outlier. It’s €10 a month in Spain, €12 in Germany. Both of those have significant rights (Spain for example has F1, EPL and includes 2 Eurosport channels)

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,685 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Expect a BT/DAZN combo to be closer to the existing BT Sport price than the DAZN one.

Rob Kearney has been added to the mix for Premier Sports

Connor Morris (who has done a lot of work over the years for the various incarnations of Setanta) and Alan Quinlan are on the call for Munster v Sharks, Ryle Nugent and Stephen Ferris will commentate on Leinster v Blue Bulls, and Graham Little, Bernard Jackson, and Bob Skinstad in the studio for the double header. So it seems there’ll be quite a bit of the eir Sport influence, which should surprise no one really.

Edit: the old eir Sport studio is in use this evening too.

Looks like the story was premature at best - no announcement by BT before market open this morning.

Seems to be only a matter of time now - DAZN seem to be the only serious suiter.

When does the BT Premier Sports Now TV deal end?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,685 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Not sure if you are referring to the length of the wholesale deal with Sky or a particular promotion that Now TV are running?

Both wholesale deals are understood to end on 31st July 2022.

I don't see it, why would DAZN be looking to buy physical channels after years of a successful online business model?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,565 ✭✭✭bennyl10

I would assume they'd just close the channels and move the rights portfolio to the app

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,957 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Doubt it. Loads of people still don't have strong enough broadband for streaming to be viable, and the delay can affect the gamblers. Plus the likes of pubs pay big bucks for satellite packages.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,685 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Yeah, it’s essentially about getting Premier League rights. It’s opportunistic. DAZN want in to the Premier League and BT want out of sport. At the moment DAZN U.K. & Ireland is almost entirely boxing. They need into the PL to make a splash and they can either wait until 2025 or they can get in now by buying BT Sport.

The disadvantage as you say is that it will come with all its existing linear carriage contracts. That’s not really Dazn’s model, but they have at least one linear channel elsewhere. Plus they’ll need a linear outlet for pubs anyway (even Amazon have temporary ones for their PL and rugby), so it may suit them to keep the channels. In time they’ll probably want to move to mainly a direct to consumer model though.

Even in the lower leagues in Spain. Its expensive for Bar and Pubs.

Normal Customer is €5 per month but for a Bar that was €50 per month.

Pubs here are paying at least north of 5k for Sky and BT.

You would encounter issues with broadcasters having issues live pictures being prone to breaking up & buffering when you show the matches to their paid subscribers. Streaming live sports events online feels more like a lottery when you don't have luck on your side even when your own broadband setup is known to be good as it can get.

BT Group plc H1 results release this morning makes only a passing mention that discussions on the future of BT Sport are still ongoing. Quite clearly a bit of a way to go before a deal is done then.
