An Idaho business owner says Gabby Petito and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, stopped into their store on their way to Yellowstone National Park — and both seemed “happy” and were chatting about their travel plans.

The owner of the Rustic Row in Victor claimed the couple popped into the shop for about 15 to 20 minutes on either Aug. 25 or Aug. 26, East Idaho News reported.

“They told me they were traveling from Florida. They had just been to Teton Park and they said they were interested in going to Yellowstone and I told them they could go to the west entrance,” the owner, who was not identified, told the outlet.

“They seemed happy and when they left, she hollered back from the door that they were engaged and then I said congratulations.”

Missing for many days, two go into the wilderness, one comes back. He goes home, won't talk to police, police say no crime here. Forward a few weeks,,, body just found, and now Brian is missing.

    What a weird case.

A couple on youtube came across the van by chance and sent this footage onto the FBI. The body was found not far from the location

They were stopped by the police during their trip too and all didn't seem well...

Goes to show, you can't really trust anyone, and fact Brian is still missing tells it all.

Yeah, made her boyfriend head home and not tell anyone what happened. Probably done the same to his parents.

Rip to that poor girl. Good love her.

I hope they get him and send him down for it. I think it's a pretty clear cut case. No doubt there is ample evidence. They already have video footage of him with scratches and bruises which may be defensive wounds if he had been violent with her before.

What's most interesting about those videos is the level of detail and how involved the police got with what was initially just a fairly routine traffic stop. Both separated and questioned at length and then sent their separate ways after being with the police for an hour and seventeen minutes.

Very strange.. Imagine the Gardai in the same situation, they would hardly even have pulled them in let alone ask questions.

But I think having kept them aside for over an hour shows that they had serious concerns about this guy. He even seemed nervous and on edge in the video. I think he gave him a spin to the hotel to have more time to study build a profile on him, see would be inadvertently give something away or give a clue.

Either way now, I just hope they get him before he is lost. A lot of perps hang or shoot themselves to cheat their way out of justice.

Shame on the people here who are trying to explain it away with mental health and anxiety.

I didn't watch the whole thing, just snippets of it, but the impression that I got was that they had concerns for him, not about him.

    Very strange case nonetheless.

It's mad that he was able to be at home and refuse to speak to the police...

Now he's on the run and body found, all to be expected.

Why couldn't the cops detain and question him? He was prime suspect in missing persons case ?

Search for boyfriend of Gabby Petito in Florida suspended

A search has been suspended in a Florida nature preserve for a man police say is a person of interest in the death of his girlfriend, Gabriel “Gabby” Petito, whose body authorities believe was discovered at a Wyoming national park the couple visited.

North Port Police Department said in a news release that the agency “has no plans to conduct a major search” for Brian Laundrie, 23, on the 24,000-acre Carlton Reserve in Sarasota County.

The police statement said officers had “exhausted all avenues in searching of the grounds there”.

Is this the annual blonde dead white girl story from America?

That's a bit insensitive isn't it? A young girl is probably dead.

Yea I don't get that. And the police said '' no crime here, we're not investigating a crime'' Not even questioned, and allowed to roam free.

He's a clever guy, that area was an area he made them believe he was in. I suspect he's getting help from parents to escape justice.

A 911 call has been released (from a few weeks prior to the incident) where it appears someone reported seeing Brian hitting Gabby in their van.

And 4 weeks ago they attended an incident where he was the victim and she was the assaulter.

Seems to have been a very fraught relationship on both sides

Sad story. I dunno, if I had a hypothesis it would be that two kids, barely out of their teens, first love in full flow, but don't know each other enough yet, have this romantic idea to do the American Road Trip(tm). Stock up on youtube vids and social media dreams and set off. Then the cracks start. He's the jealous type apparently, she the anxious. Stuck in a van driving down endless roads that don't match the curated selfies in social media, theirs and others. Young love can be dramatic enough, but in that scenario everything would tend to be magnified. Cue the police call out for assault. She admitted she hit him after he kept telling her to calm down. I can imagine a blazing fight in the middle of nowhere, with no family or friends around as a safety net and both passionately storming off. And maybe that's where it all went so terribly wrong. 😔 Either she in a state of utter depression ended things(which might explain how the police didn't initially have him as a person of interest), or they fought again and he killed her. Horrible end and two young lives and their family's ruined, no matter what the reasons.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Could they apprehend his parents/sibling and arrest them on suspicion of them aiding him in evading capture, and publicize that as a strategy to draw him out of his cover?

If they are concealing him or helping to evade the police then they would be within their rights to arrest the family and publicize their rush of prosecution.

Either way, I sense that the net is closing in on him. Like a cornered rat now, need to catch him quickly before he lashes out in desperation.

He drove home to his parents house without letting anyone know.

The van was registered in her name - if anyone should be driving it home alone, it should be her.

She had lived with his parents for a year - surely they would have asked where she was.

    He didn't answer her family's calls/texts

    His parents didn't either

He has refused to co-operate with police

The family got a solicitor immediately

    He has now disappeared

    Her body has been found

I don't think it takes much to figure this one out.

Looks like there was someone in the back of the van at the time who closed the doors just as that family were driving towards them.

Indeed , As tragic and sad and all that this case may be, there is definitely an agenda within the media when you consider that over 700 mostly indigenous girls have gone missing in Wyoming alone over the last 10 years and none of them have generated a fraction of the media attention of this case. and when they do make the media the way they are reported is markedly different to how other similar cases are covered

You have to ask why that might be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 812 ✭✭✭CreadanLady

Sounds like the family have begun circling the wagons. They've been helping him spoof his whereabouts so as to throw the police off the scent.

From what we are seeing now could we be in a position where it would be legit for the police to arrest the family and press charges, even if it is only for to cut off his support network but mainly to use as a strategy to draw him out of whatever bolt hole he is holed up in.

Could the police or FBI hack or request data from their their household smart devices or cloud accounts so as to see if there's any overheard voice recordings of their conversions over the past few weeks. There could be voice evidence there somewhere.. Or clues.

Given how publicised this story now is, I predict that he is holed up somewhere. His family support might be neutralised soon by police intervention. Knowing that he is a wanted suspect he will not be able to go out on public. Therefore he won't be able to renew his mental health medications, cos it'll blow his cover.

And so, I predict that his mental status will begin to deteriorate over the coming days to weeks as the medications are absent. Also life on the run will take it's mental tool.

There are two ways things can go from that point. He will either commit suicide if the abbey is internalised, or if the anger is externalised, we could be looking at him lashing out, with the possibility of him killing again.

The family hold the key to this. The feds near to lean on them heavily.

He'll be found. One way, or another.

Anyone educated on narcissistic abuse/victim of narcissistic abuse saw the situation clear as day based on how hysterical Gabby was when the Police pulled them over.

Instead Brian bonded with the officer over “toxic women ! ” got a fist bump from the Cop....and Gabby was dead 2 weeks later.

    Good job Cop!

What are the odds of him having left the state , possibly the country , aided by his parents/family, before the relevant authorities even knew he was "missing" ?

It honestly wouldn't surprise me .

I find it sickening that the police responded in the way they did given the 999 caller clearly stated that Brian had been seen hitting her multiple times.

Even at 57% that still almost 400 women going missing , one every 10/12 days or so in Wyoming over the last 10 years , but the one that gets International coverage is the photo-genic white girl from Florida while the hundreds of missing Native American girls get barely a mention.

Not questioning the value of the coverage for Gabby Petito , but definitely questioning the lack of coverage for all the others.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,854 ✭✭✭✭silverharp

not an agenda as such, just practical and ultimately a pretty middle class white girl going missing is more "entertaining" to read about, all the true crime wine moms can get their thinking caps on so more clicks. The alternative would be to have a constant stream of stories out of places like chicago so would take on the appearance of a predominantly left wing media making minorities look bad.

It is incredibly tragic the way indigenous women going missing generates close to zero news headlines and here we are, thousands of miles away talking about one random and isolated case.

Sadly for them, this Gabby lady fits the profile

Twitter is alive with speculation about the missing & the murdered in the same vicinity as Gabby Petito was found, including a young Irish man missing since June. Whether they’re true crime wine moms or not, I don’t know but they use #socialmediadetectives in their posts & are heavily invested in all aspects of these cases, as far as I can see. Not sure what the families must make of it all.

are we not talking about it because there are several videos of the events leading up to her disappearance?

in this case it was a Youtube channel that found the vehicle, so in a particular case more attention is good

The families of the indigenous women don't have the same means to publicise their disappearances. People like to say that they're not cared about but I don't think it's as simple as that.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,217 Mod ✭✭✭✭Wibbs

America, American culture and American media is and has always been White, anyone else gets lip service if that. Not just indigenous folks either, Black, Hispanic the same. Unless they or their parents are rich and famous they're rarely reported on too. Photogenic young blonde woman is near the top of this tree(photogenic White children just ahead), so a case like this sadly very much illustrates this missing White woman syndrome.

It's not just America either. Humanity in general has a hierarchy of tragedy. It generally goes children, women, famous people, men. Boko Haram had been killing and kidnapping boys and men for ages, but when they kidnapped schoolgirls the World went nuts about it.

That's a huge part of it too. The media have material to feed the beast of 24 hour rolling news.

I think the whole middle class white girl thing plays a big part as has been said numerous times but I do think another thing that has given this more traction than most other cases is that she was a blogger who had a following and they were keeping up to date with her travels and suddenly it stops and then there's all this footage from police and other people with video footage from their cars etc and everyone loves to play detective and have their own theories as to what happened. In most cases when people disappear you won't have all of that.

If an attractive blonde woman was living in a trailer park in Arkansas or on the streets of Baltimore, she wouldn't get this kind of press either. A middle-class black woman would get more. I think it's more about income and circumstance than race.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,638 ✭✭✭✭ohnonotgmail

‘Missing white woman syndrome’ – US television host dismisses interest in death of Gabby Petito - Independent.ie

    classy move

Panelist Derrica Wilson of Black and Missing Foundation agreed and said: “It is definitely the issue.” Cases where people of colour, men, women and children go missing are not taken seriously, Ms Wilson said.

I wonder if theres a white and missing foundation ?
