Marmion had his hands on the ball there but was more concerned with shouting at the ref for a pen rather than securing possession. Jenkins ripped it off him.

And it ends in a Cardiff try down the other end.

Need some serious character from the Connacht team to get this back.

Didnt deserve to be close on the balance of play and now the scoreboard is following.

Going to be a long season with this new format by the looks of things.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,341 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

Actually don’t think there’s been much in it on the balance of play. Just stupid little errors have let Cardiff back into it.

    Bealham off with a knock.

Really poor kick out of defence from Marmion set up that Cardiff counter attack that led to the Hansen yellow card. Connacht their own worst enemies tonight.

Connacht follows up the Cardiff yellow with two quick yellows of their own. Very frustrating.

Looked like a forward pass near the half way line before that cluster fsck

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,688 ✭✭✭BrokenMan

This has been terrible brain dead stuff since the Cardiff card. Going to the back in the lineout and then two cards. Game was there to win.

Not to mention Cardiff losing both 10s before half an hour.

Well the possession and territory was 70/30 after about 30mins.

That's what I was referencing. We were on the back foot most of the game.

    Game over now anyway.

Trying to see who played well. Porch has stood up, toh, only heard his name once or twice, Hansen had a few good runs before his card, Daly did okay at times. Not a lot of positives out of this game

Connacht ground out a 6 points lead approaching half time but it’s been mistake after mistake ever since. Cardiff living off Connacht’s errors.

Hard to win with so many mistakes from both your 9 and 10.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,688 ✭✭✭BrokenMan

Thought Oliver was busy while he was on. Still lacking a big ball carrier at 8.

  • Registered Users Posts: 755 ✭✭✭Zeugnis

Surprisingly, we were ok in the scrum, and actually won a couple of penalties there on Bealham's side. Burke did fine, I thought.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,341 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

Yeah, scrum went OK. Lost a few lineouts alright. One harsh enough one for being crooked.

Just bad decision making cost us. 6 points up almost at half time. Cough up a forward pass under our own posts to gift Cardiff a try. 5 points down on 67 minutes but with a man extra for 10 minutes we immediately get 2 players sin binned due to more bad decision making.

To be honest really disappointed with that performance tonight. I don't see any improvement or structure. Watched a few connacht league games recently, lower level but much more enjoyable.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,982 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Not a good performance. Everything that came after their yellow was bordering on shambolic. Lineout was poor, especially after Heffernan came on. Straight up tackling was good but we were constantly caught narrow in defence, as we have for years now. Loads of errors and stupid penalties. Scrum was good and we did play some good heads up stuff in attack.

Bealham had a great shift, hope he's ok. Prendergast and Oliver were two of the other standouts for me. Marmion's support running and defence were excellent as per but his weak kicking game does get us in trouble at times. Hansen looked dangerous looking forward to seeing more of him.

can see a back three of porch Hansen and wootton being very dangerous going forward.

don’t know why boyle wasn’t starting. Don’t think there’s any balance with Oliver abs Butler both starting.

hooker is a huge issue, lineouts haven’t improved at all.

that game is why Carty isn’t an international regular, the game was asking for him to take it by the scruff of the neck and drive home a win

FT: Connacht Dev 22 Ulster Dev 19

Scorers – Connacht Eagles: Tries: Matthew Devine 2, Jonny Murphy. Cons: Cathal Forde 2 Pen: Cathal Forde. Ulster Development: Tries: Scott Wilson, Shea O’Brien, Zac Ward Cons: James Humphreys 2.

Connacht Eagles held off a strong second half surge from an Ulster Development XV to claim a second consecutive interprovincial victory at the IRFU’s High Performance Centre on Friday.

Following their convincing success against a Leinster Development side in the same venue, the Eagles were hoping to continue their winning run on a breezy afternoon in Dublin. With a brace of Matthew Devine tries being supplemented by a Jonny Murphy five-pointer, they found themselves 19-5 in front at the interval and well in contention for a memorable outing at the HPC.

This opening period blitz proved crucial in the end as the northern province fought back on the resumption, with Ireland U20s fly-half James Humphreys – as well as lively replacements Lewis Finlay and Zac Ward – very much the fore. Nonetheless, the Eagles did enough to claim the spoils in the end.

Patience was required from Connacht during the early exchanges with the Ulster defence leaving space at a premium in the attacking areas of the field. The westerners spent a good chunk of the first-quarter inside the Ulster ’22’, however, and it ultimately paid dividends in the 19th-minute.

Off a close-range set-piece, scrum-half Devine spotted a defensive gap and crossed over the whitewash in clinical style. A compatriot of Humphreys in this year’s Ireland U20s set-up, Devine’s half-back partner Cathal Forde added the bonuses in confident fashion.

Rather than settling for a shot at goal, Forde very often opted to kick to touch as the Eagles sought additional tries to compliment Devine’s breakthrough score. This worked a treat for his side on 27 minutes when – after the Connacht maul secured front-foot momentum – Devine was on hand to claim his second try of the half.

Ulster had struggled to gain a foothold in the play up to this point, but came roaring into the action just past the half-hour mark. Conor Rankin was close to getting over in the right-corner, only to be forced into touch just shy of the line.

However, Ulster got their hands on the ball from the ensuing line-out and tighthead prop Scott Wilson supplied the finishing touches to a powerful maul. Although Humphreys’ conversion was off-target, Ulster had served notice of their potential.

Still, Connacht remained calm and reinforced their authority ahead of the half-time break. At the end of a lengthy spell inside the Ulster ’22’, Devine released flanker Murphy for a try to the right of the posts.

Forde also split the posts off his third kick at goal to put Connacht into a strong position at the start of the second period.

They were called on to do a lot of defensive work during the third-quarter, but stuck diligently to their task as Ulster aimed to force their way back into the reckoning. Ulster No 8 David McCann was close to crossing over on a couple of occasions, but the Eagles were able to keep them at bay for large stretches.

With both rearguards applying enormous pressure, it was difficult for either side to develop a strong attacking rhythm for much of the second half.

However, Ulster finally found a way past their interprovincial rivals for a second try in the 69th-minute. Humphreys and Ward carried at pace into the opposition half, where Shea O’Brien was ideally-placed to cut in from the left-wing for an eye-catching try.

Humphreys added the extras to bring the gap down to seven, but the Eagles were to grab an insurance score with the final whistle approaching. With victory within his side’s sights, Forde elected for the posts from a 30-metre penalty.

He expertly dissected the uprights to leave Connacht on the cusp of another triumph in the HPC. Ward did sprint over for a converted effort from the final play of the game, but the Eagles were not to be denied.

Thought Dowling had a great first half, mobile aggressive and accurate in the lineout, wasn't as obvious in the second half as our defensive line speed dropped off and the missed lineout as we chased the game was a pity on an otherwise all round effort.

Burke impressed me as well a more than decent effort in the set piece and contributed well around the park.

Bealham, prendergast, marmian and porch also on my positive list.

Both hookers had a few costly errors and will be looking to play much better as the season goes on.

Well beaten, but tried hard. Long season ahead.

Poor enough performance from some on Friday. I'll give a pass on a few losses because of the changes in coaching structure. It will take time to get it right.

I thought there would be a bit of good news on the LH signing seeing they said hopefully 1-2 days but it's now Monday and nothing. We need a good news story as it seems very quiet on any positive Connacht related news.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,224 ✭✭✭ClanofLams

Fifita & Blade back in full training, no new injuries from Connacht twitter.

Delay in announcing loose head is frustrating, typically when they say we hope to announce in coming days it’s already signed and a day or two later announcement is made.

    Hopefully someone has signed anyway.

I see Arno Botha was quoted about Leinster game and Connacht match this week, said perfect weather didn’t suit them against Leinster but it’s meant to be wet this week and they will be looking to take Connacht on upfront.

Hopefully Fifita hits the ground running. Looking forward to seeing him. Great news on Blade too.

Very frustrating about the new LH but I suppose there are reasons for the delay.

Would be nice to get a bit of decent weather for the game. It's going to be a bruising affair.

Add beef, Blade, Fifita'a, Boyle, starting; Bolton, Masterson, Aungier 23, 20, 18

Marmion, Dillane, moved on the bench ; Oliver McCoy and Arnold kept out

Seems very likely that whoever Connacht had in mind for loosehead signing fell through. It’s a week on, no mention of it and doesn’t appear to have been mentioned in yesterday’s press conference based on media reports.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,221 ✭✭✭SqueakyKneecap

I'd always be of the belief that you don't make mention of any signings until all the paperwork is completely sorted. If another signing falls through close to the finish line you'd have to wonder really.

I've seen Connacht on Twitter replying to a few people that they are processing electronic season tickets and they will be out to customers before the game
