At 2pm today there will be a Facebook live Q&A from parkrun about the proposed return next month for England:
    Facebook
     facebook.com/parkrunUK
    YouTube

    youtube.com/c/parkrunglobal

Will see if I can manage to tune in and see what they have to say for themselves.

They have been mentioning the surveying of parkrunners over the last several months and how from that survey, and how the responses change in different areas over time. Just had the survey through myself for the first time.

Nothing particularly tricky or any detailed responses required, just a bunch of click boxes, but assuming they have been sending that same set of questions out all the way through I can see how they could get genuinely useful data from what seems like a bunch of relatively undetailed questions. They survey also isn't being handled by parkrun so that should hopefully take some of the bias out of the results as well.

Haven’t watched the whole Q&A yet but it looks as if parkrun in England won’t be coming back in October. They skirted around giving a date but hinted heavily that it will probably be postponed due to the stricter lockdown rules coming into force in England last week. Even if they are exempt from the new rules the increase in cases and increased public anxiety means the start will be delayed.

Honestly, while there are some areas where it might have been ok, the NW is already on its knees with the virus. We're over 100 cases per 100k in the last 7 days in Manchester

Thats pretty much the rate here in Dublin aswell, no chance it's coming back in Ireland any time soon.

Glad to see Tasmania restarting. A glimmer of hope in a fairly gloomy outlook otherwise.

That's one of the great thing about parkrun, I know that guy from Ballincollig parkrun before he moved home to Japan!

Any sign at all of parkrun coming back anytime soon. I'm really missing it, then I see groups doing it on saturday morning anyway.

Missing it sorely myself. I fear it's a long way away. They started putting plans in place for a return (in UK anyway) for late October, however, this coincided with community transmission of virus going out of control so no hope of re-opening it. To answer your question, who knows. Parkrun will certainly err on the side of caution. I did one road race recently. Race organisers put on a superb race with great protocols , for example, social distancing at start and ushering people off at end and capping numbers in line with public guidance. However, parkrun would never be able to pull off such logistics every Saturday morning I feel.

Events in Australia starting up in the next few weeks.

Hard to see all events surviving in Ireland as core volunteers lose interest

There were some locations where they had planned to restart but governments have imposed conditions that park run can’t possibly comply with

But that wouldn't be because the core team had lost interest which was the point.

They were also due to restart in Poland this weekend, but cancelled that on Friday. The government restrictions would have still allowed it, but get the impression that it was a close call and they figured best to hold off a bit longer yet.

Should still get some northern hemisphere events in a couple of weeks with Isle of Mann and Guernsey restarting.

For any of the other events in Europe it still needs that countries football stadiums to be at 50% capacity + before I think we'll see anything happen. I'd still be perfectly happy with going to most parkrun events right now, except for a couple of very, very busy events that have very, very small start areas...and then mostly due to not being able to keep track of a 5 year old in the mele more than anything else.

It's all down to public perception rather than virus risk, and that's why football (or whatever the local flavour of stadium sport is) needs to return first to keep the non sporting populations attention diverted.

I say maybe Summer in Ireland. Poland doesn't really have contact tracing at the moment either. This is where the problem will be here, no contact tracing no event, at least till the summer

Would you see football/ GAA/ rugby stadiums still being closed until next summer as well?

Mainly yeah. UK are more likely to take risks and I can't see soccer stadiums opening till at least March if lucky.

Any stadium that opens here, will be at 25% capacity and there will be a procedure in place for contact tracing there also.

If you have several thousand people in a stadium for 90 minutes, plus a bit of mingling at half time when they go for a wee, then I don't see any reason why a couple of hundred couldn't meet for a couple of minutes in a park before they go for a run/ walk though.

I've always thought it needed football back first before parkrun. The UK government responded to a petition about allowing football back today and basically said the trials were stopped at the beginning of October not because of any risk, just because it wouldn't feel right whilst trying to get people to not socialise at home.

I'd expect there to be significant pressure from football clubs again the moment the numbers start falling in hospitalisations again. Can't see them keeping stadiums closed until March.

But Irish government is very cautious, so they will enforce contact tracing for at least another 6 months.

Not ideal, very frustrating for all

Have to disagree, core vols will be all over parkrun as soon as we get the go ahead. I don't see the larger population losing interest either. People are probably not talking about it as much as they were in the beginning but once it's safe to do so, I think parkrun will be back with a bang. The issue in the interim is how the staff in the UK can keep operating until then as is quite likely it could be the summer before things are back.

They are cautious because they have not giving sufficient resources to Contact tracing, testing and increase in Hospital/Treatment capacity to deal with the pandemic.

Dont see that changing anytime soon.

Contact tracing is not the issue.

23000 calls last week, almost 80000 so far in October. How many of those people are self isolating properly? Contact tracing could have 50000 people and unless those they contact take it seriously it's pointless.

Look at Ratoath. 1200/100000 incidence rate just 3 weeks after they had massive parties after a GAA county final win. Several other GAA related situations the same. And I know one person in a different situation who was told to self isolate after a communion party but he didn't bother.

50% of those who get a test after they are identified as close contacts fail to turn up for the 2nd test a week later. I would guess that's because they haven't bothered to self isolate.

So junior parkrun is now penciled in to return on the 11th April in England, but only for ages 4-10, and 5km parkrun's in England on 5th June.

    :D:D:D

Hopefully everything keeps going in the same direction and these dates don't have to be pushed back.

5th of June is a long way off. If we've learned anything from the past year it is that planning too far ahead is a dangerous game. Also if it resumes in England but not in Scotland and Wales, many from those areas are likely to travel to England for their parkrun fix. Not an ideal situation.

It's all based on the relaxation of restrictions in England and only happens once national changes happen, so just laying out what can potentially happen and when.

Not overly concerned about tourism. It is a really small number of people who have even ever gone to anything but their home event. Also there are not many massive population centres near the borders, except along the M4 where I am, and in those points there are loads of parkrun's on the English side that any tourists wouldn't make a difference.

Doubt there will be much difference between the nations lifting of restrictions when they get round to announcing their plans. Most of the difference in rules so far has been one nation saying that the time is quarter to three, another saying that its 2:45 and the other saying 14:45. They are all working from the same information and involved in the same UK wide meetings on covid being given the same advice from the same level of medical specialists. All amounts to changing the font on the documents.
    :)

Incredible amount of positivity on FWT podcast this week. They have a plan and it sounds reasonable given where England are with regards to vaccinations. A lot of emotion shown by Tom. I initially thought there was an audio issue but he was welling up.

I had already heard that he'd got emotional during it, but still caught me out on listening to it. Knew that was the question that would set him off and I still thought there was a problem with my podcast player app.

Thought they said originally that only a full parkrun territory would return so it would all of GB rather than just England? Not that I've anything against parkrun resuming once it's safe to do so of course. Imagine they will be plenty of cross border tourism from Wales & Scotland if they their parkruns are still on hiatus.

Will be interesting here if NI resumes while ROI is still closed down.

They did originally say that, and that juniors would return at the same time as well or possibly after 5km had returned. That thinking changed back around the time New Zealand first restarted, if not before then.

I don't think there is much problem with England returning before Wales and Scotland, there might be if Wales returned before England though. The only cross border mass traffic on relatively small events the other side I think would be from Bristol to two small events that are visible from there but on the Welsh side, other way around and Bristol has loads of events compared to the potential touring parkrunner numbers. Possibly similar issues up Cheshire direction too, but the distances between population and parkrun event on the Scottish border are too big to make it much of a problem. Not many people will do a 3hr + drive to run a parkrun, some will but not many.

I would anticipate that Wales and Scotland will end up with very similar dates for the relaxation of restrictions, and parkrun isn't even returning at the first point when they could. If Scotland relaxed restrictions a month after England then events could restart in both places at the same time.

NI and Ireland is a different matter and might be they do need to be synchronised.

I listened to the most recent Free Weekly Timed podcast at the weekend on my long run. You couldn’t help but get a lump in your throat as parkrun COO Tom Williams became emotional.
I do hope they get parkrun back up and running in the UK, June seems like a way away yet.

    Update on the milestone tshirts:

    https://blog.parkrun.com/uk/2021/03/17/changes-to-milestone-t-shirts/

Will be a £15 charge per tshirt from 1st September, but the same price globally and includes delivery. Also they are adding some extra milestones with volunteer 50,100, 250, 500 and run 25.

You'll also be able to buy additional replacement tops for if the top gets damaged, or you need a different size.

Yay, finally have a start date for our local junior parkrun on 9th May. :D:D

Was some confusion with the restart as the event team thought everything was in place, the landowners had given permission, they had got their people to email back to parkrun HQ that it was good to return and the coffee shop had stocked up with extra cakes a couple of weeks ago in anticipation of lots of excited juniors and happy parents turning up... Then massed confusion from the landowners when nobody showed.

Seems their email outbox hadn't synced up right and the email never actually got sent back to parkrun HQ. Guess the constant messaging from parkrun HQ to UK event teams to check their comms is right and little mistakes can mess things up.

Seems there is also now a start date for at least one junior event in Wales to begin in a couple of weeks too so things are moving along outside of just England. I'm also hearing positive noise regarding another parkrun territory being close to getting permission, but nothing officially confirmed yet.

Up in Scotland we have some non-parkrun races starting up again next week which is good to see. We're not meant to be getting >200 runner events until June but wouldn't be surprised if that was something that was pushed forward. We moved this year and have a parkrun across the road now so very handy especially with the late start we get can almost get a sleep in!

Now confirmed for the first parkrun event in Wales to restart as well on the 9th. It was the event I suspected, which is also going to be an inaugural as their initial start date I think was meant for the first or second week of lockdown one. The are in a lucky position geographically, stuck between two motorways on some old industrial scrub land, but it's actually a really pleasant course and you'd only barely know where you were. They are also not anywhere that people have heard of and kind of tricky to find so should be safe from massive influx of people.

Despite that though I dare not say their name, or even mention that I know of an inaugural on the UK based social media, for fear of people noticing.

It's a lovely group hosting the event and their previous 5km course which had to move 100m and be renamed, was the venue for my buggy PB.

If you're curious, it's called Rogiet, that is the correct spelling, it's not French and it's not said how you think. :D

22nd May has now been confirmed for USA parkruns to be permitted to return, depending on local state requirements. Very unlikely to be all of them, but really doesn't matter for any US parkruns if they return on different dates as nobody is touring like in the UK.
