Heading into the same territory as that Batwoman TV show.

    Glazers Out!

Except in the comic Batwoman is into woman so in that sense it was comic accurate

so, just write new source material, and the character can be whatever you want....

someone get on to Ian Fleming, quick

Bond producer Barbara Broccoli is quashing the idea of a female Bond, as long as she’s involved, saying “Bond is male” flat out.

Death has this much to be said for it:
You don’t have to get out of bed for it.
    Wherever you happen to be
    They bring it to you—free.

The rumours have been around for years

But have been amplified by rumours that No Time to Die will feature a female 007 but not a female Bond

  • Registered Users Posts: 107 ✭✭Tangey99

Don't like the female doctor, and I don't think it's because the doctor is female, I just think the acting is quite thin, and not helped by that voice, not much in the way of natural authority or gravitas.

A hard ass female agent has been shown to work really well, Atomic Blonde with Charlie Therzon was a good bourne-esk type movie. But, whereas there is some justification in the realm of Dr who for having a female doctor, i.e. there is a entire regeneration going on, so why shouldn't a generation end up female, there is no scenario than allows Ian fleming's character to be female.

Not thinking of the female character in particular, but I was just chatting the other night and saying that Bond and Dr Who are the only two long running franchises i know of that have a completely natural acceptance that the actor playing the lead role will change.

Off-topic but I think the notion of regeneration of Dr Who is one of the best story device in the history of TV/film making. It was a masterstroke, enabling the franchise to go on forever.

    Capaldi was great I thought.

Smith was crap, but the scripts did not help.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,067 ✭✭✭✭martingriff

In relation to the last paragraph we know the name James Bond and the 007 are given to an agent and while we got close with Daniel Craig I would like the passing of the name and 00 to someone at a start of a film due to the old one dieing

I liked Capaldi. IMHO he's the only one of the new lot who would have worked as the character back in the 60's and 70's. He was old style Doctor Who. However I think that was part of the problem and this ties in with Bond or any long term franchise.

In general an audience is made up of general viewers, general fans and nerdfans. The reboot of Who worked because it rejigged the franchise and aimed it at general viewers, while keeping some fan service in play. Only some mind you as the first outing of the new Who had quite a few nerdfans unhappy with the direction. EG Billie Piper's character was very popular with general viewers, but the nerdfans hated her for the most part. Also popular with general viewers was the hint of more than just friendship between the younger than in the past Doc and [insert female companion here], again not generally liked at all by the nerdfans. Capaldi going old skool lost much of this general audience. Jodie Whittaker initially got viewers because of the novelty and nerdfans generally liked it, but it very quickly lost the general viewers. It wasn't helped by dire preachy scripts and while Whittaker is a bloody fine actor, she wasn't a good fit for the role. Bugger all male actors would be either. The showrunner has chops as a writer of right on kitchen sink drama, but not for Who.

When the Star Wars franchise kicked off again they went for safe and all three demographics by going full copypaste of the original first flic and added a Disney princess. The second outing tried to go rogue, which is admirable, but buggered that by scarily bad writing, which is not. Having realised they may have screwed the pooch the last outing tried to reverse all that and ended up worse again.

With James Bond the general viewers and most fans and nerdfans want a good looking British bloke in his 30's/40's with attendant good looking Bond Girls, exotic locations, luxury living, gadgets, car chases and explosions, tweaked for current audiences. They might stretch to a Black actor in the role, but a woman just won't cut it and the studio money well knows it. Never going to happen.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I can't speak about Dr.Who because that begins and ends for me with Tom Baker. But I don't know why some people are bringing it up as an example here. The central conceit of the Doctor is that a Timelord can die but his body gets replaced so he can carry on his work, whatever the hell that is.* That also means that his actual character changes too to explain the different acting methods of each performer. Peter Davidson was no Tom Baker, etc, so there's no point pretending. It was quite a smart little cheapo BBC Sci-fi workaround that didn't require too much navel gazing.

Bond, however, is supposed to be the same guy, despite the fact the series is effectively rebooted with each actor that takes up the role. So, him all of sudden, being either black, gay, or female (for whatever silly reason) is just going to rub people up the wrong way entirely, because they (the general viewers, general fans and nerdfans) are used to the particular formula you mentioned above. And it's a formula that works and has worked (surprisingly well I might add) for decades because it has been quite simple and rigid.

*As an aside, I seem to recall someone in the show saying that Timelords were all male.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,067 ✭✭✭✭martingriff

In relation to all timelords are male that was changed when Capaldi shot one and they regenerated to a female. Also there are various time lords are seen that a female is around. So not sure if cannon. Also timelords normally have a limited number of cycles (12 I think) but in a story with Matt Smith he is given extra cycle when other give up there power but

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,122 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

It's being brought up because a certain section of Dr. Who fans and also non fans with an agenda went absolutely ballistic and wrote the new series off as the worst ever before it even aired.

Who, Star Wars and Ghostbusters are probably the big 3 when it comes to previous outrage over women

You'd want to have awful thin skin to be upset at the very idea of a female Bond....or for that matter a black Bond.

As for people same Doctor Who is different because the timelord generates, I call bollox.Sure Bond is supposed to be the same person, but funny enough he changes in height, weight, build etc. You'd want to be simple to think its the same guy. Nothing stopping Bond being black or a women really. Its fiction for god's sake.

In fairness I'm still upset about the fact he is a Heineken drinker now instead of Martinis

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,967 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I'm pro Idris Elba, I'm pro a gay male James Bond although it'd feel a bit stupid given his history but I'm totally against a female James Bond as I feel it would be the end of the franchise.

Given his previous history with women nothing stopping a bi-sexual James Bond,

The Daily Mail would launch a campaign against the very idea 😂

given craig's time has come to an end now, you'd have to be thinking, if you were the producers, that you'd have to do something interesting with bond in order not to fall back on the same old bond schtick. unless they precisely want to fall back on the same old schtick.

Liam Hemsworth has a Bond look. I think he'd be a great Bond

As has already been pointed out on this thread, it's been rumoured for years because it's a wonderful click-baity headline. "Next Bond may be female" and then the article goes on to say non-cited rumours 'within the industry' speculate that it could happen".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,969 ✭✭✭billyhead

They won't retire Bond. The Franchise makes huge box office takings. Money talks although I agree it should be like Bourne and end now.

Actually Bond is not the same person it is an allies for a 00 spy not sure if just 007. The new books specify in the first book. I suppose Flemming never thought it be going over thus long

  • Registered Users Posts: 391 ✭✭animalinside

Exactly. Who gives a **** about what's been "rumoured for years"? Rumours are just free money for newspapers.

I'm struggling to see why the discussion is just continuing as if nothing had happened - you have it straight from the horse's mouth - Bond will not be a woman. You're not ignoring her because she's a woman are you? That would be quite ironic.

The head of Eon Productions, who signs off on every key hiring and firing in the franchise, said she will be discussing who will take over the role from Daniel Craig next year - and that it will be a man.

She told the PA news agency: 'James Bond is a male character. I hope that there will be many, many films made with women, for women, by women, about women.

There - James Bond is a man, definitely for the next Bond and probably as long as Barbara Broccoli is alive.

I'm hoping it's a cis-gender Male. Would like a black guy to get it and my ideal choice would be Will Smith but he might be too old/American for the role, idris Elba could do it but I think he'd have a similar rawness and grit Craig brought to the part. Maybe a new silky Bond is in order. Hardy, Cumberland or Hiddleston could all be good but I'm not sure if they could with their Marvel roles.

This thread was never about Bond actually becoming a woman it was about giving the "anti-woke" snowflakes somewhere to vent their outrage at life.

I think this will drag on for a long time just like most of the other laughable storm in a teacup AH/CA threads going around regardless of any quote you can pull up from Broccoli

This thread was never about Bond actually becoming a woman it was about giving the "anti-woke" snowflakes somewhere to vent their outrage at life.

So this thread is just to annoy people? OK. Then I won't be contributing to this farce any further. I'm out.

Do you remember all the outrage many many years ago when the Battlestar Galactica remake came out and people lost their absolute minds over Starbuck being played by a woman, and it turned out to be one of the best characters of the entire show with an amazing story arc?

Change for the sake of change is bad, but changing a character because it makes sense and works is fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,122 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Designed to either annoy the "woke" side, rile up the other or both.

That's why it was posted in AH not entertainment. Practically any thread in AH or CA about gender is the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,122 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I loved both versions of that show. Thankfully back then I didn't know people got so outraged over TV characters so I never noticed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,253 ✭✭✭Sonics2k

I distinctly remember it, the usual suspects losing their minds and I vageuly recall some threads about it here on boards and other social media.

Super quick search of Boards (new search is **** btw) and found a thread and like 7 posts in was a complaint about Starbuck being a woman.

Ya she was cast ages back. I believe she will be the young up and coming hotshot to play off "old man dragged out of retirement for one last mission" Bond

What about the proposed reboot of Friends? Instead of being about the humorous, romantic lives of 3 males and 3 females in New York, it will be about the humorous, romantic lives of 3 females and 3 males in New York! 😲

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,122 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

In fairness if Friends was made today it would almost definitely have one gay and one black friend. Almost definitely also involving terrible race/gender related storylines written by straight white people

How many 00s have we seen. Sean Bean was an active one 006 and was Bardem a former one or just a different type of British spy

Sorry what I meant was they could just do a spin off with her rather than change bond.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,122 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Bond is a marketing franchise so it doesn't work without the name Bond 007. Take Bond out and these movies are exposed for being the below average mess that they are

Might as well just make some spy movies unconnected

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87,605 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

As a female no way should Bond be a female

He has to be charismatic, a fighter, wear a tux well and get the ladies, that is Bond, we all dream of being a Bond girl

    Imho best Bond is Dalton

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,122 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

    I agree about Dalton.

But a woman can be and wear all the things you just listed and despite being in a lot of my favourite Bond movies Moore was practically none of the things listed

Female Bond? Kate Beckinsale? Angelina Jolie?

Spinoff might work. Act one aged James has female partner. Act two James is killed. Act three female partner takes lead. Etc.

James Bond is male. Ian Fleming didn't leave any ambiguity in there. Want a female superspy? Come up with one from scratch. Why pollute an overwhelmingly successful franchise with this gender fluid nonsense. Case in point, the latest Ghostbusters. Tainting a great legacy. Stop trying to appease the politically correct bores. James Bond is a man, warts and all. Offended? Watch something else.

Personally, I thought Atomic Blonde was a heck of a lot better than any Bond flick since Casino Royale.

Regarding Bond, I'm not fussed either way but if the best idea they can come up with is a gender swap then they must really be struggling for ideas. The problem for me isn't the gender of the titular character, it's the boilerplate installments in the franchise that add nothing. I'd rather see Roger Moore's Bond face off with Blofeld than the banal tripe we got with Spectre.

Ultimately, I just want the films to be good. The wailing about Bond's gender doesn't resonate with me at all.

Ghostbusters, 2 movies popular with people of a certain age and unheard of by anyone else. Ya what a mammoth of culture DESTROYED by a new version with women.

Bond, a Fast and Furious movie with extra suits which mostly exists to sell watches and Heineken
