Since the old thread disappeared on this new boards.ie platform I decided to create a new one. Hopefully it will bring some life back into the motors section. The platform has still not fully recovered from the down time and changes.

1.This thread is for motoring topics which you feel are not worthy of starting a new thread for, banter from a meet or general motoring related chit chat.

    2.Keep it clean.

    3.The Motors charter applies.

I was actually looking for this thread a few days ago as its the main one I used to post in.

I don't have much motoring news the A4 is going well I haven't really done anything with it other than getting the two dents taken out of the door and boot (along with driving it a lot).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,060 ✭✭✭Sexual Chocolate

Same I couldn't find it either. New boards is too white.

Did you get the 150 or 190 model CIP ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

Anyone know if you can find out if a car is taxed by running the reg?

As I type this cornmarket comes to mind I will check that out and if not hopefully there is a way and someone knows.

It’s a 150bhp with dsg. I wasn’t sure about going auto but because I am doing so much driving I really like it now as it just makes long distance driving easier. I still ultimately prefer manuals but auto is better for my situation at the moment.

Man I just sold a bike on DoneDeal and I forgot how much of a ballache it is selling anything. The sheer amount of timewasters/idiots is beyond belief.

happened in london - apparently the range rover had been stolen but got boxed in by someone trying to park so the thieves decided to ram themselves free.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

That's mad. Bad luck for those whose cars got smashed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,506 ✭✭✭Interslice

I saw an is200 parked backwards into the divider on the new motorway section up to tuam today. For a west of ireland motorway the surface water drainage is shocking on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

You should reduce your speed for the conditions motorway or not. I was driving back from Dublin to Galway direction 2 or 3 weeks ago in bad rain I reduced to 105Km/h which was perfectly safe in the conditions. I know it's hard to get by the we are on a motorway so I will do 120Km/h or more.

Ooooft! Am I glad to see this thread back 😀

After a (miserable) few weeks of breaking my fingers, I decided to try out a new welder as my first main task after my forced rest stint. Not only did I burn myself badly, but also stuck wire straight through my thumb. Yes, that's as sore as it sounds

And just yesterday, while working on a set of injector rails, I hit myself with a hammer again. The same finger that was broke

I think I'm getting too old for this craic...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

Maybe not too old, Mr. Pigeon. I found out myself if I frequently perform tasks I have decent skills at while paying not too much attention I start to make mistakes/errors. Routine kills. ;-)

Jesus the price of S2000's these days. Just had a look on DoneDeal.

Everything "classic" is going up, even modern youngtimer classics. Seems to be a global bubble.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

I actually bought an MR2 earlier this week as the way things are going I reckoned it would the last chance I'd get to buy an affordable one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

    N/A or turbo?

There was a turbo one up last week or the week before at a reasonable price for these times I thought.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

It's a rev1 n/a with an auto gearbox. Not as bad as I thought it would be. It's standard apart from Rev2 15 inch alloys are fitted.

It's getting belts and service done next week and nct test is on Oct 1st.

It wasn't on donedeal I picked it up from a friend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,249 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

MR2s are still surprisingly reasonably priced

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

They are for what you're getting but prices have been creeping up in the last 6 months. You'd only get a basket case project now for €2k unless you get lucky.

Clean ones are going for about €5k. I've seen them more expensive but can't comment if they are selling for it.

In the grand scheme of things they're cheap especially when XLi Corollas are making near 3k!

Just realised I have 20k km put on the A4. The car must be like wdf as there was 28k km on it when I bought it and it was exactly 3 years old. I have put the 20k km on it in 3.5 months. Literally from one extreme to another.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

Jesus that's a fair bit of driving in a short period. You weren't lying when you said you will be doing a big commute.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,657 ✭✭✭CIP4

Yes while a lot of it is work commuting since Covid restrictions eased over the summer I have pretty much been going places every weekend often good distances more so than I have ever done really. It is such a comfortable car to travel in being honest the seats are very adjustable to you can get it to the way you want. TBH I liked the Octavia also while it didn't have much in the line of extras it was a good dependable car and was nice to drive with the 2.0TDI engine.

I think I made the right choice to change the A4 is the optimum commuting car for my needs. I won't be changing it while I am doing such high mileage as doing 70k km a year in a car and then regularly changing it the cost just can't be justified.

Quick question lads, friend of mine is going to look at an old car from Poland which is for sale in Ireland that he wants to buy

It looks like it hasn't been imported yet and the owner doesn't have the ownership. Can it be bought and registered ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,356 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

If it doesn't have proper registration documents with it then he won't be able to register it in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,964 ✭✭✭Kopparberg Strawberry and Lime

    Thanks for that bazz

How would one go about getting something like that sorted if he did buy it ? Could he not bring it to a main dealer to get it verified etc and a solicitor to sign off on it ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,356 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

He might but main dealers have been known to not want to get involved with that sort of thing especially on an old car. Where would that leave your friend then, stuck with a car he cannot register here? I'd be more inclined to think why the seller doesn't have proper registration documents with a car they are selling? Also what if the car was stolen or worse here or back in Poland? A seller not having proper registration documents with the car they are selling would raise suspicions with me.

^^ Aye to above. An old car from abroad without appropriate paperwork it's huge red flag. Avoid!

What is the story with those chip tuning boxes like RaceChip? Are they any good or just a gimmick.

I have to take more tea breaks than I used to! Not sure if I'm getting old or just getting less sleep!

I got an email from VW to buy a service plan

    9.99 €

2 Oil Change Services including Filters (pollen, air & fuel)

Brake Fluid change and Spark Plugs also included

    16.99 €

3 Oil Change Services including Filters (pollen, air & fuel)

Brake Fluid change and Spark Plugs also included

I'm thinking over 2 years the plan would cost (24 x 9.99) so 240, whereas a classic service is 189 each. Saving 140 euro. So it's a no brainer

    What's the catch?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

Yesterday I seen a turbo UKDM DC2 on Facebook. And the mad thing is it's on Irish plates in the UK and he was asking how much is it worth and people were telling him to sell it in Ireland which makes sense since it would cost a few quid to import one from UK to Ireland since brexit. And it's already on Irish plates so it would be worth your while to buy it if you were living in Ireland.

Only downside is it's modified with the turbo but some would like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

    They are a good deal.

Catch as far as i can see is you dont get the roadside assist package that you do with the Classic/ Ultimate services.

That and by VW standards you are supposed to go classic/ ultimate alternating, not two classics in a row so you will have to pay €120 if you want to turn one of the classics into an ultimate. Even if you do that though, you've still saved the €140.

Falken tyres any use ? ZE310 specifically. The ST came with 4 brand new Grenlander's but I'm not keen on them or do I trust them. Definitely want to change the fronts soon with the more frequent wet weather.

Also deciding between Kumhos, Firestones or Uniroyals.

Had falkens on 2 cars (different model though, 310's predecessors). No complaints whatsoever. :-)

are matador a good make of tyre?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,356 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

They are a mid range budget tyre. You could do alot worse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,060 ✭✭✭Sexual Chocolate

I believe they're a cheaper version of Kumhos or so Modern Tyres told me when I bought the Kumhos for my 320d.

Not sure how they'd be on an st but I've grenlanders on an e11 corolla in a pretty big size for the car (185/70r14) and they've been great so far for a budget tyre.

They were brand new on a set of wheels I bought for it hence I didn't set out to run them but I've plenty of experience with what I would class as sh1te tyres too and these ain't sh1te.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,060 ✭✭✭Sexual Chocolate

There's a fair bit of torque going through the wheels when it's boosting (400Nm I think) so they are spinning in 3rd when the road is even damp. 😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,048 ✭✭✭selectamatic

Ya a turbo fwd hot hatch might be asking a bit much of them in fairness.

Nokian powerproof were a good wet weather peforming sporty orientated midrange tyre I had looked into. Uniroyal rainsports grip well but soft sidewalls and wear fast.

Goodyear asymmetric 5 or Michelin ps4 or whatever the newest versions are called are the go too for most in anything performance orientated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,731 ✭✭✭ILikeBoats

I put Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 on my old ST, did a great job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,067 ✭✭✭✭fryup

quick question - if one reversing sensor is broken does that mean the whole set has to be replaced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,991 ✭✭✭zg3409

If you mean the little round buttons on the bumper, no you can replace one, Typically there is a control box in the boot, with a connector for each sensor. Beware typically the sensors are body colour and I am not sure if DIY painting will detune them harming performance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,060 ✭✭✭Sexual Chocolate

Yeah these seem to be the next best thing after PS4's it seems. I know lots of BMW drivers use these and and no complaints with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,074 ✭✭✭GustavoFring

I put F1 ASY5s on the front of the Cupra and wasn’t too impressed. I haven’t tried the F1 super sports but the PS4S’s that replaced them are leagues ahead in terms of getting power down. Michelin are doing cash back from certain retailers too at the moment - think it’s about 50 for 2, 100 for 4.

Like everyone, not been posting much lately.

I have come across an NCT quirk. I have two cars, a 132 and a 152. I bought the 152 this time last year. It has been for sale for a year and they did an NCT before I took delivery as it had not been renewed when they took it in trade. NCT expiry 29 Oct 2021 (ie only one year, retaining original due date).

the 132’s NCT was done 30 Sept 2019 and expired yesterday. However, it benefits from the 4 month extension and I had no reminder etc.

the 152 which was tested last year (ie more recently) does not benefit from 4 month extension as it didn’t have a valid test cert on March 2020 despite being tested since.

another example of joined up thinking!

Not sure where else to post this, but anyway, I was at the lights yesterday afternoon in Oscar Traynor Road (Dublin) and heard this horn beeping repeatedly, next thing I see is a black Golf overtaking my queue on the wrong side at well over 120kph I'd say, and going through the red lights at speed like the ambulances etc do. The rear bumper was hanging off.

Anybody else see that or hear of a crash involving said car?
