Only positive from this game is Leavy has shown he's still quality and will be a starter once he's fully match fit.

Well thank goodness that's over! Dreadful stuff from Leinster.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,090 ✭✭✭OldRio

    That was pure muck. Utter.

Collie o brien did his chances of big game appearances a lot of damage with that performance. Typical "trying too hard" from him where he took everything on himself and ran up blind alleys all day. Ball handling was poor as well.

Take the win, and get the hell out of there

We played as badly as I’ve seen us play in a long time, but Dragons brought absolutely nothing to the game. They barely got into our 22 at all and just clung on because of our errors. They absolutely did not deserve to win.

Not one player, starting or from the bench had a good game, the poor lad who was his debut so can’t put much blame on him but the rest was woeful

Baird came on and looked like he washed his hands in baby oil before he came on….I doubt anyone will see the player have as bad a game again this season

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,760 ✭✭✭dudley72

Did they throw the players into a hat and just pick one for MoM

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,762 ✭✭✭✭molloyjh

I thought ROL, despite not getting much of an opportunity, was decent. Otherwise, meh.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,172 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

VDF, Ryan, Porter and Sheehan had good games as individuals. Some big contributions around the pitch. But there were so many errors around the pitch elsewhere that we never built on their big moments.

Keenan and RoL were the pick of the backs. Which is impressive as neither saw much of the ball for the first 40 minutes.

How many times have we all used the parable of a 7-6 at Rodney Parade and here we have it. But I'm inclined to agree with the analysis, a bettee opposition would have brought out a better Leinster performance and a much better game. As it was, Dragons were about killing it off for 80 minutes and never had a sniff of the try line themselves.

Yes, the midfield failed in the quality of distribution, but I would send them out again in Landowne Road against Zebre next weekend with the threat of being dropped ringing in their ears and see what they do with the opportunity. If they don't don't bring it up a level in the big house on the expansive pitch, well its very informative for the coaches with Scarlets and Glasgow coming quickly after.

We’re in the RDS next week.

The worrying thing about today was that the Dragons practically followed the blueprint laid out by Saracens twice and La Rochelle on how to beat Leinster. And they should have beaten us and would have if they had more quality.

Leinster crumble when faced with physicality, aggression and line-speed. And when you can't win collisions, you're far more susceptible to turnovers, and Dragons had an absolute field day today at the breakdown.

We need to come up with a way of getting forward momentum against teams who bring physicality and line-speed. If the Dragons can do that to us, imagine what La Rochelle or Toulouse will do.

I also think Ross Byrne is a big problem. We better pray that Sexton stays fit at the business end of the season or that Harry Byrne can stop getting injured and kick on.

Right, let’s make sure we clarify a few things. Dragons did not deserve to win that game. They should not have won that game. They created the sum total of nothing at all. They spoiled really well, but to win a game you have to be able to score. They never once came even close to threatening our line. So let’s drop the “Dragons should have won” or “Dragons deserved to win” garbage please. Because that’s all it is. There is no basis in reality for it at all.

Leinster played badly. It happens. It actually happens to plenty of teams in Rodney Parade. Linking that game with what has happened in the HEC knock outs over the last few years is nonsense. Mainly because we won. And were the only team to create anything. And were the only ones playing any rugby. What Dragons did was spoil really well. We let them. That was compounded by poor performances from a number of individuals, some of whom wouldn’t be in the 23 in any meaningful games.

That brings us to the most important point. In bigger games against better opposition, we would have selected a better team and been more focused and possibly even better prepared. That’s not an excuse for such a poor performance today, but it is reality.

We weren’t as good last week as some suggested. We’re not as bad this week as some suggest. Plenty of teams have had days like today in Rodney Parade. We won. Let’s just take the points and move on. If we start seeing further performances like that one then maybe we can start talking about issues or worrying that we may have similar issues in the big European games. But for now it was just another example of a sh!tshow in Newport. It wasn’t the first and won’t be the last.

That was like getting a tooth pulled, dreadful at the time but at least it's all over

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,914 ✭✭✭Rigor Mortis

I see your point but I'd still send today's team out in the Aviva next week.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,952 ✭✭✭TRC10

We played badly because we were faced with aggression and line-speed that you very rarely get at this stage in the season.

It wasn't our strongest team, but apart from Russell and C.O'Brien, everyone on that team today will likely be in the 23 come the knockout stage of Europe. It was far from an academy side.

The Dragons didn't win because they didn't have quality to create anything, but if a better side brings that level of intensity against us, they will win, and it's how we've been knocked out of Europe the last 3 seasons. Teams suffocate us. It's our achilles heal, we saw it today.

You’re drawing links between things that just aren’t there. Dragons spoiled and we performed poorly enough to let them. That categorically isn’t what happened against Saracens or Lyon. At all. Dragons didn’t really bring a huge amount of line speed or physicality. They lost nearly every metric going. And do you think that the Dragons did something that the likes of Munster or Ulster or Exeter are incapable of?

You're overreacting. In a big way.

We were shyte. It happens. Dragons were worse. They absolutely did not deserve to win.

It's the second game of the season FFS. Some guys were playing their first proper game in months.

If the next couple of displays are as bad, then we can worry, but for now, relax the cacks

How many of the starting 15 will be in the starting 15 come Europe tho? 6, maybe 7?

Dragon's away, in the 2nd game of the season, where you played badly but got the win is the definition of a game that'll be forgotten about by the time the Champions Cup knock-out stages comes around. So-much-so that it's practically the cliché.

What? Again so soon? What's he been promoted to now? Defence coach?

Positive news to start as Conor O’Brien, Nick McCarthy and Dan Leavy all came through the game against the Dragons with no issues after their return from injury and are expected to train as normal this week.

The trio of Jordan Larmour (groin), Tommy O’Brien (hamstring) and Harry Byrne (foot) have all returned to full training and will be available for selection this week.

Second row Jack Dunne will look to increase his training load this week as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury.

Rory O’Loughlin sustained an injury to his shoulder against Dragons and that will require further investigation and he is not available for selection this week as a result.

There are no further updates on the following:

Caelan Doris (calf), Dave Kearney (ankle), Michael Milne (calf), Will Connors (knee) and Thomas Clarkson (hamstring).

Any reduced ticket prices for members on Sat in the RDS?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,047 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

Leinster said on Twitter that bars will be open, FYI

  • Registered Users Posts: 463 ✭✭circos

Anyone hear anything about the terrace this Sat? Is it business as usual? Didn't see anything saying different.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,762 ✭✭✭✭molloyjh

Terraces are open. Bars are open. Food stands are open. We are all but back to normal it would seem.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 6,414 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sheep Shagger

Odd, thought that wouldn't happen until 22/10 when the last of the restrictions are lifted across society in general - Happy days

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,914 ✭✭✭Rigor Mortis

can anyone tell me where the ticket exchange function is on the Leinster website?

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,762 ✭✭✭✭molloyjh

From what I understand, the Sportsground were able to serve pints because the bar and stands were all outdoors. Thomond wasn’t allowed serve pints because the bars are indoors. So the Centurian for example probably won’t be open.

I thought that got scrapped (unfortunately). Maybe I'm wrong.
