When someone pays their €5 a month sub, Twitch takes about half, and the other half goes to the streamer. So far all that money going to a streamer, Twitch is pocketing about the same amount. Twitch are most definitely raking in the cash.

I am far too old to ever understand the appeal of streamers, the concept of watching someone else play a game is completely foreign to me.

Holy ****, twitch dolla dolla bills yall.

My friend streams and he has a good following, real dedicated fan base who always tune in. I rarely get to watch though as any free time i get is usually spent playing games. I prefer the ol YouTube channels myself but proof is there, people love watching people.

I agree. But I have to say I've been watching and really enjoying the streams of some of the Kinda Funny guys playing through the MGS series for the first time. There really is something enjoyable about watching them experience some of the story things (or even some of the Kojima-isms in the games), something you can't get from replaying the game yourself (it did encourage me to replay MGS3 myself, but there's a different enjoyment in that).

But even then, it's free. Why would anyone pay for it? One of the last streams I was watching, someone gifted 50 subs to others watching. I looked it up and that costs about 250quid.

Why would anyone do that? They're not even buying subs for themselves, but other people. F*cking headcases!

Some streams can be quite entertaining, and i will occasionally stick one on while doing something else. Its entirely up to how engaging the streamer is though, and what they talk about. I'd have no real interest in just watching the games...can watch a YouTube video for that.

I do wonder why people will watch (and pay money to watch) women licking microphones though. Just watch porn lads 🙄

I definitely don’t get the appeal of streaming, but I don’t think people paying for content they like is that strange. I’m certainly happy to chip in a euro or two a month to a handful of podcasts / video makers / publications I particularly like via Patreon or what not - I think that’s ultimately a more sustainable and healthier model for supporting independent creators than the reliance on ads.

I would, however, perhaps be less inclined to chip in one or two euro a month to someone making 250 grand a month 😅

I was never one to take to streaming either, I never saw the point. Then a comedian I’d be a pretty big fan of started doing it with really random games and just generally taking the piss, and before I knew it I was tipping and setting notifications for them so I didn’t miss anything. It’s an easy bubble to get sucked into.

Not generally for me, but each to their own. There are always worse ways to spend your money, depending on one’s own tastes.

If the comedian is Limmy, that’s perhaps the only one I’d countenance watching - although I do get the highlights via Twitter 😆

I remember i was in a doc waiting room once and tv3 morning talk show was on complaining about twitch. Presenter said his son would use his credit card for the odd mtx(he described it friendly but could tell what he was getting at) until he noticed 40 euro gone off his card in one go. He asked where the money went and his son said he gifted it to a twitch streamer who told his followers he didn't have enough to pay rent and wouldn't be able to stream of her was homeless so everyone started helping him out. It's so dirty asking kids to pay your rent.

I only watch viper from the hardy bucks. He streams are usually pretty funny. Daft as fúck in places as well but in a good way.

The biannual GDQ is the only thing I ever stream. Nice to see them up in the top 100 considering what they do for the charities they represent.

Mentioned above, it’s the Viper for me too. Definitely wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but I still have a juvenile sense of humour I think. 😬

I was shown Irish metal gear solid at the weekend which i believe is by the viper as well. Shnaaaake :D

Dragon Quest composer Koichi Sugiyama has died aged 90.

He had some… questionable beliefs to put it mildly (an ultranationalist history denier). But the Dragon Quest theme may be the single greatest theme in the history of video games. The way those games sound is a large part of what make them tick, even if Sugiyama’s creative control led to some odd decisions in later years (such as the all MIDI soundtrack in original versions of Dragon Quest XI). Still, a man who has left behind some of the very best game music there has been.

He has done some incredible iconic music. But yeah, he has some beliefs that are pretty abhorrent. So a bit conflicted by this.

Ha ha ha, those are brilliant alright. One of them is missing from youtube and I have never been able to find it

Seems he's moving more towards the films/tv side, with the Borderlands film and probably trying to push for more based off their other games etc.

They lost a lot of international team licenses this year outside of Europe, so it could be rebranded as a UEFA or Champions League game in future I'd guess.

They're running out of things to change now, so the name is seemingly next. And that'll be all.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,911 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

They lost a rake of Serie A clubs too so they couldn't even run with with the likes of Juventus, Roma not officially in the game.

    'Surprise Mechanics 2023'

Also 'Surprise Mechanics Legacy Edition which still has FIFA18 written on the advertising banners in some of the stadiums 2023' coming for Switch.

    @Penn

    Really? The lazy gits!!! 😁

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,410 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

I know Ultimate Team is more innately evil, but there’s something about the Legacy editions scam that I find uniquely distasteful 😅

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,602 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah, the Legacy Editions for Switch are sold on the basis that there's no gameplay updates or anything in the game, it's just the same as the previous game but with teams, kits etc updated. But in some cases they don't even go to the bother of updating the banners in stadium backgrounds, some of which had the FIFA(Year) symbol from a game or two previous.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,320 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

So assuming you were mad enough to want FIFA for switch, and didn't care about the accuracy of the team: what's the oldest, least cynically produced version on the system? Had heard the "legacy edition" was a písstake but hadn't realised it went that far.

I gave up on Fifa when the Icon/Legend players were put in Ultimate Team. Just annoying knowing you will never get to use them without spending hundreds and hundreds of Euro.
