    My car is worth about 12 euro per kg.
    My best bike is worth about 500 euro per kg.

    or another way of looking at it; new, my bike would be a third or a quarter of the price of a bike used at the very top level of the sport.
    new, my car would be worth less than one percent of similar.

    I really hope this is not a pre-cursor for a discussion about introducing a wheels tax

    Cars = 15
    Trailers = 9
    Tractors = 8
    Horse van = 5
    Grass cutter = 4
    Bikes = quite a few more than the aggregate of the above....

    One commuter bike, about 10% of the value of the commuter car.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,997 ✭✭✭cletus

    My main bike is probably worth 25% of the value of my car.

    If I add the my other two bikes to it, I probably come up to about 50%.

    This has more to do with the value of my car, than the value of my bikes :D

    You have 15 cars?? Why?

    I thought that was a wheel count, not a vehicle count. Having said that, a mate of mine wouldn't be far off the number of vehicles Beasty has listed, he's a collector of classic cars

    RULE #25: The bikes on top of your car should be worth more than the car. Or at least be relatively more expensive. Basically, if you’re putting your Huffy on your Rolls, you’re in trouble, mister. Remember what Sean said*.

    Family does not come first. The bike does. Sean Kelly, being interviewed after the ’84 Amstel Gold Race, spots his wife leaning against his Citroën AX. He interrupts the interview to tell her to get off the paintwork, to which she shrugs, “In your life the car comes first, then the bike, then me.” Instinctively, he snaps back, “You got the order wrong. The bike comes first.”

    When I'm driving my fifteen year old banger and I see a road bike or two I say to my passengers 'look at that idiot, can't he afford a nice motorcar ' which is usually followed by a no comment tumbleweed kinda moment.

    you could easily argue that by weight, cars are much better value than bikes.
    the current model of my car (new) is about €18 per kilo.
    my bike would probably be about €300 or €400 per kilo.

    Don't be giving them ideas, with the sparsity of bikes and parts your dealer will start charging by the gram.

    Bike 1: €4750
    Bike 2: €1000
    Various bike bits: god only knows

    Car: €437 on Go Car in the last 3 years.

    Are people posting current value of bike and that of car? Otherwise it's meaningless.

    Bike 1: €1600
    Bike2: €300

    I have no idea, first one is €1800 new and less than 3 months old.
    Second one is 6 years old and has a lot of the components replaced, don't know what it would sell for, guessing €300.

    Car: €9,000

    Rough guess based on carzone ads, though mine has a lot less miles than the ones on carzone.

    So bikes are worth 21% of car.

    It does seem to be purchase price of bike vs current car price...

    Either that or bikes hold their value far better than cars!

    I know of people who have sold bikes for more than they bought them for lately, given the shortage. But I also recently read an article about second hand cars increasing in value, due to the lack of British imports.

    Giant TCR Advanced pro bike paid 3000€ last year

    Toyota Auris Hybrid 2012, paid 8700€ last March.

    So a bit over 33%

    My car is worth about €1500. 2006 civic that i hardly use.

    My bike is worth about €2k as is. So my bike is worth more than my car which makes sense cause i use it more. Don't like cars at all and would not have one only for the kids.

    I've added a 2nd hand full suspension mtb to the list now as well 🙂

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,768 ✭✭✭✭tomasrojo

    I only rent cars and vans, so I suppose the "worth" of my primary motor vehicle is zero, in that I can't sell it. The net worth of my bikes at purchase time would have been: 2000 + 1000 + 900 = 3.9k

    So 3.9/0 * 100 = INF

    Don't own a car myself. Serious waste of money. Bikes are worth 400 for the hybrid and paid 2200 for the road bike 7 years ago but worth about half that now.

    a seven year old road bike would lose a lot more than half its value i suspect. though god knows in the current market.
