Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I've seen a good few standard Mk8 around West Dublin. Seem to see it more than any other 212 reg cars around. The first models looked to be the eTSI which is the DSG so the more expensive option, was surprised to see them as so few standard models are DSG. Haven't looked on the Beep beep.ie sales stats but I wonder how the Golf is holding up sales wise. ID.3 and ID.4 selling very strong on the EV side of things.

Not for a little while yet Joe. "Small" building project to take care of.

Everything is bloody dear these days, even timber :(

I'll be back soon enough with something interesting. I'll be monitoring events here.

How much was it for sale for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

3 new Clubsports in Frank Keane's.

Some lucky owners will be picking up great cars.

Drove a 2015 Golf R the other day and it didn't have the MODE Button to left of gearknob. Did some cars not come with the ability to swap between COMFORT, RACE, INDIVIDUAL?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Early (pre 152) cars didn't have it. And you only get "Comfort" if DCC was spec'd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,505 ✭✭✭Killinator

I don't have it on mine.

To be honest along with keyless entry it was one of those things I never really was bothered about when buying.

Car has plenty of choice for me with normal and sport mode and I'm happy with that 😛

I know some will say that if I drove one with it I'd feel different but I've driven my brothers S3 with it which is essentially the same car and can't say I'd lose sleep myself over it, and he also barely changes between modes. Nice to have but down the list for me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,889 ✭✭✭hooch-85

Its handy to be able to close the valves in the exhaust in eco or partially close them in normal mode. I'd definitely find it was something i'd miss

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,505 ✭✭✭Killinator

Opposite, I wanted them open at all times 😁

Anybody here buy or drive a manual GTI MK8? I have yet to see one in the flesh or see a review of one but Im getting more tempted as it I wouldn't mind buying one decent performance manual before they are all gone- any thoughts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,767 ✭✭✭eljono

If anyone is selling or thinking of selling a 2016+ R or Mk7.5 GTI PP, give me a shout via PM please. Manual, low mile cars preferred. Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,987 ✭✭✭User1998

VRT increase of 4% just announced. So aprox €2,500+ increase to the price of a new R from Jan 2022

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭JoeA3

I'm glad I have my car registered now and not in January!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,889 ✭✭✭hooch-85

That's a serious hike on an already very expensive car. My understanding was that only the top two bands are being hit by 4% but maybe I'm wrong?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,288 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

"The 20 band table will remain with an increase in rates, with a 1% increase for vehicles that fall between bands 9-12, a 2% increase for bands 13-15 and a 4% increase for bands 16-20."

I see petrol stations were upping the price by 4-5c this weekend too in preparation for the budget, just over €80 to fill the other day. €1.589 to €1.659 in 3 weeks.

Anything over 146 grams per 100km is hit by 4% so basically that includes anything warm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,987 ✭✭✭User1998

Is the R not in the top two bands? I assumed it was as its something like 30% VRT? If not it will be a 2% increase. Still not ideal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭JoeA3

GTI is (was) 26% and R was 31%. So I guess they are now 30% and 35% respectively. Its making what are already very pricey cars just very unrealistic.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,889 ✭✭✭hooch-85

Used values will continue to hold firm or even stay rising so if that's the case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,043 ✭✭✭Casati

Top 5 bands are increasing by 4%, not the top 2, so anything over 146 g/co2 per 100km is getting a nice increase

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

    That's ridiculous.

Anything even remotely interesting is getting taxed to the hill.

  • Registered Users Posts: 56 ✭✭Cetera

Another €2,500 on my R order for 2022!!! Already stretching my budget so need to weigh up my options!

I understand the need to decarbonise as a society but these taxes on new cars are counterproductive. We will have people holding onto older - and more polluting -cars for longer now. Our electricity network is already struggling and charging infrastructure is still way off; not to mention the lack of public transport in rural areas…

Anyway, rant over…I just don’t want to say goodbye to the combustion engine yet.

Can’t wait to see what my dealer comes up with in his next quote😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,574 ✭✭✭carsfan2

The government has obviously decided to abandon the carrot approach and just beat the motorist with a big stick to move us all to electric nirvana.

those of you with performance golfs are quids in though.

I reckon there may be a good few golf r/gti’s registered in December!

Mine may well be one if it gets here in time. Build week 44 as far as I know but that could change as build week and delivery has been really unreliable going by others. Read that some lads in the uk who ordered in spring are being told spring 22 now after being given several other earlier build dates.

We do seem to get them a lot quicker so hopefully that holds true.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭JoeA3

You can’t rely on build weeks at the moment unfortunately. You have week 44 but it could be 3-4 weeks beyond that before they start it and then it could take a few weeks to go through production, due to the parts shortages. Once it is built though they do tend to get shipped reasonably quick.

It’s far from typical to register a new car in December but these are strange times.

  • Registered Users Posts: 483 ✭✭PaulRyan97

It's really not going to result in people keeping their old cars longer. Of the top 10 best selling cars right now, I think only the higher specced diesel Volkswagen Tiguans may be hit by that 4% hike. I can imagine though they'll get less popular anyway with that new PHEV option. The remaining cars will have 1-2% hikes while the rest don't change.

The cars that would have a significant VRT hike are not really big sellers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 792 ✭✭✭Zurbaran

If it’s 2500 extra on an r I’m assuming it would be a little bit less on the cs. I’d take that hit happily if they stand over the original agreed price as I think that there would be a similar difference three years down the road between a 212 vs a 221. I’m pretty sure their price was locked in when they ordered the car in June.

I’ve certainly not ruled out registering in December but would rather not. On the other hand that new year plate may not matter as much as it normally does since there doesn’t seem to be many of these (or any new car really) around. That’s not going to change at least in the early part of 2022, so in three in a bit years how many 2022 cars will be on the market? I’d guess very few and importing from the uk is not a thing anymore for most cars never mind a performance golf.

in general I can see the second hand market remaining strong for a long time. Even if new car production ramps up in the next year it won’t change too much here as far as I can see.

Nice one here, looks clean and original bar that front splitter, but its a three door, might suit you if you don't need extra doors, decent enough spec too, leather, big screen nav.

That's a good find Hooch, thanks. Seems well priced too in comparison to similar ones for sale?

UK Import. Manual. 3 doors. Longford reg. Mudflaps. Wind deflectors. Front splitter.

Several things there that would put a lot of buyers off or at least make them think twice. Muppet Man's car was similarly priced and similar age, it would have been a far better prospect than that one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,889 ✭✭✭hooch-85

OP is looking for a manual with low miles. They aren't too easy to find. Mods are questionable but easily reversible in a beggers can't be choosers market.

I agree re Muppet Man's car being a better prospect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭JoeA3

True, missed the manual gearbox requirement.

I see it also has an "Autostadt" window sticker... I wonder do we know who owned it. I don't remember seeing it anyway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,889 ✭✭✭hooch-85

Hadn't spotted the sticker, I'd say I could ask a few questions and find out who owned it handy enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,620 ✭✭✭ILikeBoats

    Are they 18" Cadiz?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,889 ✭✭✭hooch-85

Yes, standard fit on UK cars, Irish cars came with 19" as standard. Not too many went for the upgraded Pretorias in UK. Afaik they were a much more expensive option over there, they were only €130 extra here so were a no brainer for many people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭JoeA3

They were a near 1k option on UK cars.

Could anyone recommend a good place that does ceramic coating - preferably the Limerick and Munster area? Also, should I bother with the advanced paint protection (€399) application that the dealer can provide if I’m getting a ceramic coat?

    Thanks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Don't bother with the Lifeshine from the dealers. Its just Autoglym polish slapped on by one of the lads in the valet bay.

I'm skeptical of ceramic coats too tbh, but D&D detailing down in Cork have a good rep.

  • Registered Users Posts: 56 ✭✭Cetera

Thanks Joe. Very helpful. Did you do anything to your CS to protect the paint?

There's a guy in Newcastle West that did my ST a few years ago, he was recommended here. MX Valeting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭JoeA3

I gave it its first wash/detail last weekend, all DIY, and I was very happy with the results. I've spent big bucks on coatings with pro-detailers in the past and decided against it this time. I'm just not convinced the bang for buck is there. Detailers charge mad money for coatings these days and personally I get a strong whiff of snake oil.

With a bit of patience and the right (inexpensive) products, you can do as good a job yourself.

I actually picked up some bits from the aforementioned D&D.

I used GTechniq C2v3 which is both really easy to apply and seems to give great results. The paint is like glass after it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

I've gone back to D&D for a wash the other day and it looks as good as the day they worked their magic with it.

Im going to pick up my own bits and work on it myself too though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 56 ✭✭Cetera

Thanks Lads. My last MK7 R had a ceramic coat applied from the previous owner and I thought it looked incredible, so that’s why I might go with it on the new purchase.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,288 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

I got the paint protection pack free after my car was delayed. It's about €100 worth of AutoGlym products which are generally considered cheap in the car detailing world. Ammo NYC is a good YouTube channel for detailing guides. If you're getting any ceramic costings go to a proper detailer especially as the cost should be similar.

A bit of homework and planning make washing the car easy. Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel is savage stuff if you have a pressure washer as you don't even need to use a brush or sponge it just rinses off all the brake dust, much quicker too if you have many spokes per wheel. CarPro do a good tar and iron remover.

Get a razor blade on a handle (hob cleaner tool from Woodies) and scrape the windscreen at a low angle to remove caked on stuff along with using auto clay with lots of water/lubricant and light movements.

I've only used AutoGlym wax and even that had the car shining, any wax will give it extra pop after a wash but cheaper stuff won't last as long

Proper mitts and drying/buffing towels are a must. I've a few different Microfiber Madness things. Windows can be tricky but the two towel method works well. Buff with one, dry with the other.

I have parking spaces outside my house so don't bother with the pressure washer anymore as I'd have to focus on not spraying neighbors cars or people :(
