I only grow a few veggies for ourselves and pass on extra to family members. The last two years everything was late going in because of the years that were in it!! I'd like to be ahead next spring and start things indoors, I don't have a greenhouse, so which online catalogues should I get and when. Grateful for any suggestions.

My favourite seed catalogue is Chiltern Seeds. Unfortunately since it is in England its not a lot of use now. Other than that you might try The Garden Shop https://www.thegardenshop.ie/seeds/ though I have not bought seeds from them. I have purchased other things and been entirely satisfied with them. I rather fancy the multicoloured Chard and Beetroot.

Thank you Looksee, I'll look them up.

Try seedaholic.com, Irish based and Ive had good service (and good seeds) from them

Thank you Gaspode , I'll add it to my list. Has anybody got any advice about the UK seed companies who have pulled out of the Irish market or can I still source them here? Preferable for Irish of course but occasional a variety might not be available.

If you have someone in the uk you could ask them to receive them and forward them to you.

This is the comment on the Chiltern Seeds site

Unfortunately, we have stopped accepting orders from Northern Ireland and countries outside of the UK. Further clarity is needed regarding the situation post Brexit and should it become clear that we can send orders overseas again, rest assured we will!

    and this is Suttons Seeds

Unfortunately like many companies in our industry we are currently only able to supply orders to UK based customers

and they are pretty typical, maybe there are some still posting seeds but I haven't found them.

Here are a few, all Irish

    https://www.brownenvelopeseeds.com/

Lots of heritage and unusual varieties. Germination excellent in my experience. Very good value and all organic. And you’re supporting a great small Irish business.

    https://irishseedsavers.ie/

Again the focus is on heritage varieties, with a concentration of Irish seeds. And again have germinated very well for me

    https://shop.giy.ie/collections/seeds

GIY doesn’t need too much introduction. Small range of seeds, very good value and have always performed for me. Lovely shop/restauraunt and very interesting growing beds. If you are ever in Waterford it’s well worth a visit.

I’ve also got some wonderful seeds in the past in the on-site shop in The Organic Centre in Rossinver (Leitrim). Not sure whether they sell seeds online. You could phone them and ask. https://m.facebook.com/TheOrganicCentre/ and https://www.theorganiccentre.ie/

For more mainstream orders I’ve used https://www.mrmiddleton.com/vegetables/ and https://www.glanbiaconnect.com/search?text=Seeds in the past.

I forgot https://www.seedaholic.com/ who have a huge range including heritage and organic selections.

  • Registered Users Posts: 923 ✭✭✭Jellybaby_1

Many thanks Hibernicis. Also if anyone is interested, I was wandering around The Range in Liffey Valley a few days ago and saw a lot of veg and flower seeds there for 75c each, all well in date. There were some empty points but plenty left.

I choose premier seeds direct for my tomatoes. I need blight resistant varieties after getting caught by late blight this year. They have a good selection. However this requires using AddressPal and getting caught for vat/customs fees.

Also check out the happy greenshop on ebay. They have all kinds of seed and offer free postage once you buy a few items. They have one base in Donegal and are very good.

If last year is anything to go by, Brexit has been very bad for Irish gardeners because we can't use UK suppliers. I used Kings Seeds for years but they couldn't send last year and that remains the case today. I hoped it would have been worked out by now but looking around tonight I can only see UK websites that say they can't supply Ireland.

There are plenty of local suppliers but, purely based on last year's experience, they will struggle to meet demand. Spring 2021 was a mess as anybody who tried to use an Irish garden website will remember. Most either ran out of stock or completely shut down due to volume of orders. I might be being a bit dramatic but I am looking at ordering from the Netherlands this year.

It's interesting that we have been in the EU for so long and we still rely so much on the UK for so much without ever hearing of other suppliers across Europe. I think it would be good to find new suppliers within the EU, whether it be seeds, or other products. I picked up a few packets in The Range and as I don't really sow a huge amount I might be ok for the Spring but I'll check out the Irish companies too.

Charles Dowding used to use these.

    I assume he can't now

That's interesting, thanks SouthWesterly. I see they have Purslane which I've heard about but never saw seeds here.

    I would advise ordering soon.

You never know how Covid will work in the next 6 months

    Good idea!

Lol, more likely like Fennel, once you have a plant you will always have a garden full of them. They seed like crazy!

Grand, suits me to have things regenerating themselves without me interfering! 🙂

Just watching a gardening YouTube video and the guy is on about buying seeds already for next season, surely it's too early yet? He's UK based so I don't know what their seed situation is with Brexit.
