Broadband - tied to virgin media

Hi,

I moved into my house 5 years ago, there was no phone line. eir, Vodafone and sky said they would have to dig up the garden so I just went with virgin media. They are gone too expensive but I feel stuck with them. Is there any other option?

It would depend completely on where you live.

If digging up the garden is not an option then have you looked at 5G or other wireless options like satellite broadband?

Check sites like switcher.ie they can tell you what you can get in the area.

Depending on where in Swords you might be able to get SIRO FTTH, you can check at siro.ie. They may not need to dig if your electric supply is already ducted (they can push the fibre through the same duct as that).

If getting FTTH involved digging I would personally bite the bullet on that rather than use any sort of wireless or satellite in an urban area.

Eir have committed to migrating all their urban Fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) areas to Fibre-to-the-home (FTTH), over the next three years. This programme is well advanced and the odds are that they might reach you before long. There is no sign of Virgin Media committing to upgrade their copper coax lines to fibre, and they seem to prefer to invest in sending Richard Branson on junkets in his rocket-ship!

If you want to future-proof your home and ever avail of a true fibre solution you will likely need to bite the bullet and install a duct for the cable between your house and the street. The cost of digging trenches is only going to get more expensive, so if I were you I would do it now, and simplify your migration to FTTH when it arrives.

Siro may be an option in Swords they run a fibre beside your ESB power line into the house.
