The club were under pressure to sign homegrown players last summer, nothing has changed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,711 ✭✭✭Speak Now

Shouldn't be up to Watford though. Don't some league 1/league 2 games get called off when clubs are missing players due to internationals.

It's actually ridiculous that Brazil play 35 hours before we "return" from the international break. The whole situation has barely been mentioned and when it is it's lumped in with Covid and travelling restrictions. Even without covid the scenario is nuts.

    Fabinho on Raphinha:

"There was a discussion about him going to Liverpool, but in the end he stayed at Leeds. Since he arrived in the Premier League he has had very good performances and highlights. For Liverpool, I was hoping that would happen. But in the end, he stayed with Leeds. He’s Leeds‘ best player today. Whenever we play against them, we know he’s the player who can cause the most danger. He is a left-footed player who goes up, comes in, as well as on the outside. He’s a guy with a lot of personality and he’s already shown that he can help us a lot.”

Raphinha's agent Deco (yes that Deco) is saying in the Brazilian press that Liverpool have inquired about  Raphinha.

    Deco is also Fab's agent.

I think you need to look not at our homegrown player numbers, but the number of players allowed from outside the UK. That number is 17, then you can have up to 8 UK homegrown players to make the squad size of 25. You cannot have more then 17 players from outside the UK, so if you have no homegrown players then you will only have a squad with 17 players, along with the youth players you are allowed.

That is why we allowed Minamino to go out on loan last year, to get Kabak in we had to make space for one non-UK player in the squad.

My understanding is that for registration in UEFA comps, it needs to be three years between the ages of 15-21. So at this moment, he's not HG in any nation, but if he came back to England before he was 20, he'd end up HG for English sides.

I think the Premier League are more lax about it and just take any 3 years before the age of 21, so he would be HG for PL registration, having been in Birmingham's youth system since he was 7, but I'm not completely sure if that's how they do it.

Interesting - going from a man who can't stop shooting to a man whose record with shots is, by the man's own admission, non-existent.

Newcastle after Edwards the in the papers this morning.

The Watford game seems like a recipe for possible disaster tbh....no Fabinho, no Allison, groggy after international break and up against a potential new manager bounce.

Although Watford change manager so often I wonder if it's possible for a new manager bounce at this stage.

We should have more than enough quality either way hopefully

Looks like the intelligence of their new owners/directors has been greatly underestimated if that's the case.

He'd love that project too, and the money would probably be insane for a sporting director role.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,113 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Klopp mentioned that in their preparation, they had to study how Sampdoria played as that was Ranieri's last job. He'll have had his time on the training pitch too with the players, to get them prepped for this game.

It's still a game Liverpool should expect to be winning either way.

Watford always give it to us as well....this may not be comfortable viewing. I'd snap someones hand off if they offered us a scrappy 2-1 win!!

Milner, Hendo, Ox & Keita the only available midfield options now for tomorrow.

Keita played 3 games in 6 days while on International Duty. Hendo is in poor form. Ox is in worse. Not exactly inspired with confidence with the midfield right now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,504 ✭✭✭✭martyos121

We might have to go for a Toby lineup so. 4 at the back, 6 up front.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,113 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Might see a 4-2-3-1 with Firmino/Minamino central possibly.

Wasn't he carrying a knock into that game too???

    Fucking England....

    Henderson Milner

    Salah Firmino Mane

    Jota

Ali didn't play last night and Fab started and played 72 minutes.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,724 ✭✭✭gafferino

Didnt Jota return early from Portugal with an injury?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,374 ✭✭✭robwen

Yeah & didn't train & they still brought him on against Andorra the other night ridiculous carry on

The Portugal set-up seems to have a bit of cop-on, unlike England.

Portugal were playing Luxembourg and knew they were unlikely to need Jota, who was carrying a niggle. Send him back to Liverpool and keep them happy was likely their thinking.

England U21 were playing Andorra. Decide to play Jones anyway, who was carrying a knock, cos "Englerland, innit!"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,199 ✭✭✭Talisman

Lee Carsley and Ashley Cole are the England U21 management team, they weren't renowned for their intelligence as players so it would be a shock if they exhibited some now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,454 ✭✭✭jamesd

Why would Jones not say that he is injured and cannot play to them ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,298 ✭✭✭✭rob316

Great a skeleton midfield away to a side with the unpredictable new manager bounce. Not optimistic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,843 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

Thiago as good as he is when he's go rhyme has been a bit of a disaster signing in terms of injuries considering we already had Keita & Ox in the squad,

    ,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,843 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

Might be a weekend for 3 at he back ,

Gomez , VVD ,Konate , pace either side VVD instead of Matip , Plus you know there going to go the Brentford route and try attack us in the air at RB

Then Milner & Hendo sitting in midfield with Robbo & Trent either side on the wings

With which ever 3 you like up top

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,225 ✭✭✭marklazarcovic

how the fcuk does nabby manage 3 games in 6 days for his country but can barely manage one a week for us ..grrr

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,583 ✭✭✭mormank

This might be an ignorant answer but could it be because his games for his country are less intense? Same as when he was in Germany and played most games there, and same as whenever he leaves us he will no doubt play most games for whoever he plays for next.

No idea about Cole, but Carsley is meant to be hugely rated as an upcoming manager.

Because the national team manager doesn't give a crap about sending him back to Liverpool overworked or injured. He's sent him back injured a few times after over playing him on ragged pitches.

Moreso I'd say... I mean, lads like Neville and Southgate got into the England international system because of their England international profile. Carsley never even played for England (obviously) so was chosen more on merit.

the tea lady at Newcastle is going to be on more money than Pogba

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,493 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

It's just great Naby is fit, he was on bench against City and Chelsea, not as if he wasn't fit. Would hardly be on the bench if not able to play.

Of course we could off load him to Newcastle for 100m ☺️ I'm not sure anyone will want to join Newcastle in all fairness, who the hell wants to play in the Championship, even on big money, makes no sense whatsoever for top players. And lets get real they are going down this season, One window ain't going to save them, unless they buy 33 players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,199 ✭✭✭Talisman

Carsley was seen as the natural successor to Aidy Boothroyd as the U21 manager. He had previously succeeded Boothroyd as the U20 manager when Southgate vacated the U21 role to become the national team manager. It was the simplest solution for the FA to keep the continuity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,044 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Yup, well, sorta - Carsley joined Aidy with the U21s as a coach for a few years (after Aidy left them, the U20s were taken on by a few different lads, like Keith Downing, Paul Williams and Paul Simpson - Simpson being the main guy in that time though), but Carsley had def impressed enough that he was seen as the long term guy rather than any of the guys that had been working with the U20s. So they gave him the 20s in 2020, and then sure Aidy left only 2 games later, so they bumped him right up to the top underage job.

He's one of those lads you always heard about being a really highly rated development manager for years.

Anyone watching sky documentaries (sky 121), Kenny. All about Daglish. It’s my time as a kid watching Liverpool. Very personal looking at his playing career in Celtic and Liverpool and currently about his first stint as manager. Stunning stuff.

Note to self. I’ve seen this documentary more than once before. Must stop drinking wine.

Carsley's role in the England under age setup had previously been in a specialist role teaching players positioning skills for when the team is out of possession. It's a natural fit considering he played as a defensive midfielder as a player.

My cousin is a Brentford supporter and his take on Carsley is that he's a coach for training players but he's not a manager. He used to slag Carsley off when he was their U21 manager because he would shout at individuals to tell them what they were doing wrong in a situation rather than adapting his tactics. When Carsley became caretaker manager of Brentford, he adapted their 4-2-3-1 system to use 3 defensive midfielders and 2 central midfielders behind a lone striker. My cousin was raging because their creative spark Sergi Canos was left sitting on the bench and brought on when Brentford were already 2-0 down in one of Carsley's first games. Carsley started Canos in one of the games and kept him on the pitch when the game was won even though Canos was getting lumps kicked out of him and unsurprisingly he picked up an injury. Carsley moved on to Man City afterwards, he obviously has some talent for working with youth players as he was hired to manage their U18 team and they played attacking football.

My impression of him as a manager is obviously coloured by what my cousin has had to say about him because I trust his judgement. Carsley has been involved in the England underage setup for almost 10 years which is plenty of time for him to be indoctrinated in their practices. The FA commissioned a study into injuries suffered by players at senior and underage levels while on international duty. The report following analysis of 8 years of collected data was published last December.

They don't have a great reputation for looking after the players while on international duty and the management ignore the findings of the study. For example, Southgate kept Declan Rice on the pitch after he picked up a knock in the game against Poland last March because "he was playing so well". Rice missed the next 6 weeks of the season and returned for the final 3 league games. Moyes reaction was "Ah, it's England. What can you say?". Southgate also put an unfit Alexander-Arnold in the team for a meaningless friendly against Austria and aggravated the injury he was carrying. He named Reece James in the squad for the recent international break despite the fact that the player couldn't walk and had been exercising in a swimming pool. Tuchel made a joke about it saying he thought it was the England Water Polo team. Chelsea had also asked for Mason Mount not to be called up because he has been carrying an injury since the Tottenham game last month. The request was ignored and Mount played for 20 minutes of the Andorra game and all of the Hungary game - Tuchel must be delighted.

Man City pulled one of their youth players (Nmecha) out of the England underage squads during an international break a few years ago. It had been agreed that he would go with the squad but he wasn't to play because he was carrying an injury and aggravating it would hinder his development. He didn't play in the first game but contacted Man City days later to say he had been informed that he was playing in the next game. Club officials removed him from the England camp the same day. Nmecha switched his national allegiance to Germany shortly afterwards and scored the goal that won the European U21 Championships Final last summer. I'm not suggesting that the incident was the reason for the change, but I do think that it was a factor in the decision process.

It doesn't at all surprise me that Lee Carsley chose to put a midfield player on the pitch when his striker had just been sent off. The fact that the player he chose to introduce was already carrying an injury would have been of no consideration and because it's the England setup it's not a surprise.
