It's safe in that your money is guaranteed and it's ok to hold cash there for the short term, but it's guaranteed to lose value over longer periods due to inflation so I'd be wary of putting too much in PBs for newcomers.

haha you're spot on with the inflation thing alright.when i said in a safe place i meant somewhere that i won't spend it,i,ve a bit of a penchant for classic cars and get offered a few every month in the trade-hard to resist sometimes.don't worry though it's not a folly their value will double in circa 5-7 years.a great investment if you can appreciate them and know what you're doing.i was looking at property but will steer clear of that for now methinks.good luck.

Haha oh yeah it'll save you from yourself if that's what's needed sometimes!

This week marks a year since I bought my first PBs so here's a quick report.

My total has fluctuated in the year a little but not massively - I started off on 65k, reduced to 58k for a while before increasing to 68k.

I got off to a great start with 3 wins in 8 weeks early on so I was well above expected winnings. Since then I've had 1 win in 40 weeks (and counting).

Taking into account the reduction in the amount of prizes that came into effect early this year, I calculated that the €200 I've won in 52 draws is almost exactly the expected winnings.

Nothing for me today. The number of €50 prizes in the October draws is 4,174 up from 4,149 in September.

The newest bonds to win on 03 September was AXP564502, 01 October AXV 987577. Sales of around €40 million.

Had €50k in for the past year or so. Was keeping it for a deposit for a house. Grand total of €100 won 50x2.

Found somewhere so cashed the whole lot out. Highly unlikely I’d ever buy any more. The return is brutal.

I see a report in the indo that people over 66 will face a possible 4% PRSI penalty on savings and dividends.

I wonder could this apply to NTMA products.

We put €25k in last November, we're going to be taking it out before the end of this month. We didn't get a single win. We put the other half of the deposit into shares and we have a CGT bill for December of €5k. I mean it's safe, but it's not an investment :P

A good bank deposit rate is currently 0.15% which would have given you €75 less DIRT tax, so net €53. :)

Investing it in amazon shares buying on 8th Oct 2020 and selling today would have given you about $200 return

So in a way, the return was not too bad 😁

You invested wisely buying the shares and acquiring a CGT bill of €5k. Hindsight of course is 20/20, if you had invested that €25k in Fedex for example back then it would now be worth around €17k (with no CGT bill) while your prize bonds would still be worth €25k

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭Rulmeq

Yep, totally, himself would have been rather annoyed had I risked everything :D

I'm happy enough that we did alright out of it, it means we can borrow less too, which is great.

    Won €50 today .

    First win since June 2019

By my reckoning (if I have my sums right) you made a 70+% gain in less than a year on that investment which is pretty incredible, do you mind me asking you what share(s) you bought and what prompted you to pick those.

    €50 today 👏

I put a bit more than half into shares, from memory: Apple (pre-split), Tesla (pre-split), Disney, Twitter, MSFT, TEAM(Atlassian), and because I was insane, I risked 15k on AMC when it grew by nearly 40% (just took a risk and was sh1tting it while I held it, I could have made more, but was just glad when I sold that).

I had amazon as well (bought at the worst time, so lost money on them). Didn't hold any for very long, just in and out as I got a feeling about it.

The biggest issue I had was keeping track of the money for the c.general (I used a spreadsheet, but it was unwieldy). All on degiro, so fees were light (less than €100 in total)

I'll stop posting now, so I don't de-rail the prize bonds thread though.
