Huge landslides, parts of the mountain falling away, lava torrents, lightning, absolutely incredible tonight. I'll post vids tomorrow.

The above picture I posted now looks like this 30 minutes later. Huge canyon and lava rapids.

    This will be devastating downstream.

Any reason it seems to get worse after dark ? I know it looks more spectacular at night and its often hard to see the lava flow during the day , but does it actually get worse at night ?

Looks like a new small vent open up to the front of that camera

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,867 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Same vent keeps getting blocked by debris from the cone and then the pressure increases and it blows out again with lava surge.

    Looks extremely unstable now

I think you can actually hear the rocks and boulders hitting the ground now

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,867 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Enormous explosions now. Mountain gone bananas.

i would be gone. Sounds like the whole place is cracking open. I am scared witless from the safety of my bed thousands of miles away. Can’t imagine how the islanders feel.

Can anyone confirm if those loud thumps are the sounds of the boulders hitting the ground ? If so that’s terrifying.

Weren't they only saying that it had quietened down 😁

Two main vents now open at the top of the mountain shooting out massive boulders and lava bombs. Hard to tell whether impact noises on the webcasts but a lot of this debris is huge.

    EDIT: Lightning is going again.

Plenty of debris getting thrown around but the sound quality has gone down as it used to wake me in the morning when something was happening and now much quieter.

Anyone else noticed sound was quieter?

Watching the volcano this morning, it seems that the earthquakes are increasing in frequency and the height of the lava flow seems much increased from when I watched it last Thursday.......things are ramping up.

I hope there is an evacuation plan that doesn't rely on planes.

Does anyone know how big an area has been evacuated so far? I worry about anyone within 10k of the eruption, on any side - it is still so volatile.

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,867 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

It's settled down again this morning with consistent allbeit lower lava flow. Last night was fairly chaotic. With the earthquakes I guess the longer they go on the longer the eruption goes on.

He leaves the laptop on overnight ,sound up I should imagine

A few years ago I was on the Big island in Hawaii looking at orange lava spewing from the centre of the crater

We were in the viewing area building which was open,no evacuation, despite the orange lava spewing up

Driving up,there were signs warning of toxic fumes and we did drive across some hot debris without bursting tyres

I've climbed 3 volcanoes since, including in Ball in 2019 but the Big island one was the closest I got to the lava flow

    This one looks amazing

I'd planned to go to Iceland but the feckin pandemic got in the way

The incident in New Zealand would make you think twice though

This volcano has had a bit of everything really.

Some news on the trapped dogs. They are still awaiting authorisation for rescue.

Earthquakes coming thick and fast at the moment too.
