cashing a cheque in a branch

Havent done it in a while but if i have a bank account in AIB and i have a cheque from some one (€1,000) and their bank is AIB can i cash this cheque at the counter in AIB or do i have to lodge it to my account and then withdraw it?

Depends if the cheque is crossed or not. It usually is by default, i.e. it's printed on it, these days.

its not crossed. i might go in and to the bank and see what they say

I think most banks get you to lodge it and then you can withdraw it.

OP, I'd say your chances of getting cash over the counter are nil. The best you can hope for is that if you lodge it in an AIB branch, they might credit your account straight away so (maybe after a couple of hours) you can withdraw the money from an ATM.

If it's a large amount, they won't do that and you'll have to wait for it to clear.
