Louis Walsh was funny, so was the Paul Galvin piss-take. The Nicky Byrne sketch was funny to begin with, but it became too laboured - a bit like the Royal Family sketch from a couple of weeks ago. The Michael D. sketch was good as well, if only to highlight his silly affected accent since he had tea with Her Madge.

Aye one of the weakest episodes. Even when it fails though the production is a pretty high standard which is nice to see.

Next one the last? Hope it ends on a high. Overall it's been massively better than Mario's ****e.

    Not a fan at all.....

OH man... he's not pulling his punches on the last show...

That Rachel Allen sketch was hilarious.. And the Christy one as well..

Gerry Adams was the best yet.

He was spot on with Ray Darcy as well.

    His Ray Darcy is great.

The Rachel Allen one is seriously cringe inducing stuff. In the best possible way.

It may have its critics but it's still way superior to the Mario show (which is really shocking IMO). At least Callan tries to build in the topical news stories of the week - which takes some doing when your show goes out every Friday night. It's by far the most (and only) topical satire show we have.

And am I the only person who's getting tired of silly Miriam O'Callaghan impressions?

Good shoe last night. Mooney is just class and D'Arcy too.

Its an awful show. Just terrible

I'm not a big fan of OC and the jokes in the show are a bit draggy but I was surprised by the pieces about the GAA and the Brian Dobson monologues, it was a little bit too dark but they're pretty good social satire.

Really good last episode. Hope it makes a return. This and the first series of Savage Eye and the first series of Irish Pictorial Weekly have all been very good.

I think what Callan has going for him is he's not afraid of being disliked whereas Mario clearly is. Mario takes the piss in a much softer way and I suspect he overdoes Miriam cos she's talked publicly about loving his impression of her. I think Mario is a lickarse, personally. Callan on the other hand may soon have no friends left in the business.

He wont have any friends in ballymaloe any way.

Have to say I didn't like this show in general. One or two bits were okay but most of it was poor... Until the last Ep, I'm not sure exactly what they did and there were one or two duds in there, but some of it was really, really good. In fact It took me by surprise how good it could be.

Now if there was another series up to the standard of the last ep. then I could see a real future for it.

I was mightily impressed with the last episode myself. Actually to the extent that I can't believe I was watching RTE! It was sharp and practically every sketch pulled a punch and was very funny to boot. The GAA sequence was absolutely excellent. I've said before that I measure shows like this against great shows from the past like Dead Ringers or Bremner Bird and Fortune and, to be honest, that last show was in that ballpark, even if it might have been more walking in from the carpark in comparison but still, it was an excellent effort and if they can stick to this for a second season (if they get a second season now!) then it'll be great!

This is back on tomorrow on RTE1 9.35pm. Looking forward to finally seeing some actual comedy on RTE and there should be plenty for him to satirise

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,052 ✭✭✭Hitchens

    It's brutally unfunny 👎️

I think it's genius and funny.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,035 ✭✭✭Gen.Zhukov

That was excellent. Well done OC (and crew) Irish satire at it's finest.

  • Registered Users Posts: 451 ✭✭MBE220d

He is great at sounding and imitating people but he needs to get someone to write the scripts because he is useless at it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,699 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

Just watching on the +1 now and its very good

The Enda Kenny impression was great, 'some say Fine Gael are so useless they couldnt even do fascism right, I disagree' and then 'Ireland is the best small country in the world in which to be a fascist' 😂

And the very final impression of Michael Lehane outside Government Buildings "reporting from the David Davin-Power Memorial Kerb" 😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,182 ✭✭✭chicorytip

Was that programme shown tonight brand new or a repeat? There were a number of script writers apart from Callan himself credited at the end. Fiona Looney was one. Perhaps that's why it wasn't very funny.

  • Registered Users Posts: 451 ✭✭MBE220d

I think it's new, it's the first time I've seen it anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,503 ✭✭✭✭Mad_maxx

    It's not too bad

Better than anything Rosenstock has done but not close to McSavage

Rte.cannot.do.comedy (apart from the savage eye) and they were too conservative to risk another season of that.

The late late show is about as edgy as rte can handle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,701 ✭✭✭✭Galwayguy35

You won't see anything like The Savage Eye back again in case it offends the pink haired pronouns brigade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,503 ✭✭✭✭Mad_maxx

McSavage himself is a troubled individual, RTE probably see him as a loose cannon

Easier put Amy Huberman in something

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,293 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Has McSavage done something I don't know about ?

I don't remember anything that would offend the pink haired pronoun brigade and infact it it was said brigade seemed to be the biggest fan base among people I know

If Callan was able/allowed to do a full show on the absolute state of RTE (or even have a proper go at them) he'd be brilliant at it. God knows, there's enough material. He gets the odd tiny dig in - but that's about all that's allowed by RTE.

If he ever fell out with them, he'd shred them.

Here's a little skit for ya:

Toilet roll sales man to RTE buyer: Well, did you like those samples I sent over?

Buyer: Yes, they were fantastic. Very gentle on the hole.

Great. So, I can do a special for you at .40c a unit.

Okay, I'll set up a meeting for you with Niall Kiely Management. That's where we get our rolls from.

    Brilliant thanks a lot.

RTE buyer: Hi Niall, did you get those toilet rolls off that guy I sent up.

Niall: Yes, I've a few pallets of them here. They're 1.95 ea. That okay?

    Sure, send them all down.

Think the only 1 he upset was Joe Duffy who didnt like the sketchs that werent far off the truth

A bit hit & miss. The GAA shtick could really go. Impressions of Micheal O'M were old hat 25 years ago. Why doesn't he try impersonating Ger Canning- now that would be a challenge...

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,220 ✭✭✭waynescales1

His impression of calm Tommy Tiernan, interviewing wild Tommy Tiernan on the Tommy Tiernan show is sensational.

  • Registered Users Posts: 67 ✭✭FattyBolger

    It was really bad.

I was spending the night with my parents and they were watching it. One of the worst hours of television I've ever watched. The moderately amusing Burke Family sketch aside, it was wretched.

Callan is a terrible impressionist; they have to put the name up on the screen of who he is attempting to take off. Tired, unfunny, cliched.

Ironically enough, Callan is exactly the same kind of talentless no-mark as Tubridy himself. Stealing a living from RTE.

Hopefully Kielty has put the foot down and said he doesn't want Callan appearing so he can do Marty Morrissey impressions.

I love comedy but Oliver Callan is really incredibly bad. He doesn’t sound anything like his impersonations and the jokes aren’t funny at all. It’s sub-community theatre stuff, where the other characters have to say something like “Bertie Ahern what are you doing here” so the people watching know who they’re taking the piss out of.

The Ryan Tubridy puppet didn’t even look like him. Desperate stuff altogether.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,707 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

Coupla smiles in a few places but overall terrible, the Mescal skits were cringe inducing and far too many

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,577 ✭✭✭Bobson Dugnutt

The Francis Brennan rating Irish male actors was the sort of terrible and borderline offensive "he lines out for the other team don't ya know" stuff that you'd have hoped died out in the 70's. It's no better than Mrs Brown's Boys tbh.

Thought it was quite funny. The Burke stuff and tubridy puppet and impression was spot on. Anyone saying that was a bad impression I don’t really get.

A couple of good sketches buried in there.

They could drop some of the fake D4 accent stuff. Who were the two blond ones supposed to be?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,611 ✭✭✭MrMusician18

Going to go against the grain here and thought it was alright. Wasn't that gone on the Burke's sketch as I've long thought that has had media coverage much outsized relative to its importance.

Was fairly cutting on Tubs and McEntee, most other political and public figures got off very lightly (Burkes aside).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,894 ✭✭✭monkeybutter

Doing a full hour is pushing the format and it wasn't his best work, so I agree it was pretty unfunny, but he is a talented impressionist to say otherwise is odd

I have no problem telling who is who on his radio slots, I think the naming was to give a news vibe

He is also decent on the radio in straight mode

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,437 ✭✭✭KaneToad

I thought the Burke sketch was very amusing. Some of the other sketches had bits that were funny. I think the writing varies in it. Some good, some bad. The impressions are entertaining - Callan, particularly, is quite a good mimic. He does a good over the top lampooning of his subjects.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,374 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

The throwaway line when his Helen mcentee was walking the north inner city streets ; “were the pigeons always that big?” also tickled me.

Mr. T is still funny as Clubber Lang. Looks tiny for a heavyweight now.

Edit: Bollox I thought I was on a general TV thread😅 And I'm as sober as a judge
