Older Irish baby names - suggestions

Baby due next month and trying to get some inspiration for a name (no idea about the sex).

Want to stay away from the more common names. I love Tadgh but my wife has 2 cousins who names their boys that so its out. Also love Fiadh, but too many rocking about the place. Réiltín is also nice.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Love the name Fionn.

However I pronounce it differently from the wife. She pronounces Fyunn (like most of the country) whereas I pronounce is Finn (Ulster). Not a massive deal but has the potential to do my head in.

Useful advice maybe to avoid names that are difficult for non Irish and many Irish people to pronounce. That is if you would like your child to avoid having to endlessly repeat their names and spelling of same as they go through what is hopefully a long & happy life.

Just pick a name you like. People are well used to pronouncing the more common Irish names and get used to a new name fairly quickly.

French friends of mine chose Réiltín as its pronounceable easily by the French apparantly.

That doesn't bother me to be honest. I am certain that they'll have a happy life whether the name is English or Irish sounding.

Iarla is a beautiful name for a boy. Most common in Galway, I believe.

More less common ones that I’ve come across

Caomhlú, Cóil, Colmán, Cóilín, Fachtna, Cárthach, Osgur, Seathrún, Glaisne, Iarfhlaith (different spelling of Iarla), Murach (not sure of the spelling), Torlach, Traolach

Déithín, Lasairfhíona

There seems to be a lot more variation in the boys names.

Iarla is a great name. A friend from an Irish speaking family has a daughter Lasairfhíona and a son Cearbhall, lovely names.

I'd agree with you. Recently I noticed a Siobhan I know being spelled Shivawn because she was continuously having to spell it.

Wow I’ve never seen Shivaun! That’s mad. It’s like that American actress Neve Campbell that was supposed to be Niamh apparantly but I never once heard it pronounced as Niamh. I have seen Súin which is a short version of the name. Nice too as a name.

Lorcán, Lochlann are nice too for boys
