Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I've a question for the manual owners, my gears are quite notchy when changing, reverse through to 4th really. They never don't go into gear but there is a resistance when going into gear. They do get better when the car is hot but I'm just not happy with it as it's supposed to be a drivers car. I took the car back to the dealer and they drove it and said that it's 'normal'. I had a mk 7 GTD a few years ago from new and I don't remember it being as notchy as this. Have other manual owners found this?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,889 ✭✭✭hooch-85

    I presume it's a mk7 R we are talking about?

Can't say I've had that issue with mine and I had a GTD prior to the R too, I wouldn't describe the gear change as notchy at all.

My Dad has a diesel Subaru Impreza and it's the worst gearbox I've ever used. I'm almost guaranteed to grind 3rd or 5th on the odd occasion I have to drive it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 681 ✭✭✭Kagawa

Yes, it’s a 7.5 GTI. I just drove it now and it’s not as bad as it was last week, due to it being warmer I’m thinking.

My CarPlay is throwing wobblers quite regularly…it will not play through the speakers even though the song is playing, so I have to switch the infotainment off a few times until it figures itself out. Anyone else experience the same on the MK8?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭JoeA3

i had a similar issue yes and I was getting a black screen with CarPlay too. I restarted the phone and it’s been 100% fine since

I had updated the iOS software on the phone the day before, so I reckon it was something to do with that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,100 ✭✭✭mcburns07

Have the odd issue like this with my BMW too. Think it's probably more of a CarPlay issue than the car itself.

  • Registered Users Posts: 56 ✭✭Cetera

Thanks lads. I’ll restart the phone and see if that helps.

    Typical iPhones. They are shít....

If iPhones are what you say they are I doubt very much that close on a billion people worldwide would be using them.

Can't believe someone registered just to post this 😂

I feel special they registered close to two years ago but decided to make their first post be to answer a joke post I made.

I've had some minor issues with Android Auto, I imagine it's a similar story with Apple. Not sure about Car Play but Android Auto is supposed to just display your phone screen and the phone does all the work. I have noticed the phone you're using and even the car makes a difference.

My previous phone would lose a lot of bass after 5 minutes for some reason. A previous update did make it fussy about connecting also. The cable you're using can also be an issue with the constant plugging in and can be damaged over time. Get an Amazon Basics or Anker brand cable for cheap. I got a 2 pack of Anker USB C cables for a tenner.

Also worth completely deleting the settings and starting from scratch or just restarting.

Well, had my first f**k sale moment in the CS today.

About 3kms from Bantry pottering along about 90kmh in a 100kmh zone, hit a puddle, well.....a pothole that had filled with water, the thing must have been about 8ft deep because instantly the tyre pressure warning went off.

Stopped and had a look, side wall blown out of the front left, about a 1 inch gash and a nick taken out of the alloy.

Gets better though, after lot of cursing and near tears, I relaise there's no spare wheel so it's not going to be a simple fix.

Ring VW assistance as it's covered with the car, on hold for about 45/60mins waiting for an operator, lucky it wasn't a major breakdown.

Get in touch with someone eventually and there was a tow truck operator contacted me through VW assistance, he paid for a local taxi to drop us home. Car has to go to the nearest VW garage which is in Skibereen which is pretty far away from where I live, maybe 80/90kms.l but about 10kms from the car "broke down"

I can get a hire car but they're not open until tomorrow and can't get me a car until 1pm and I have to get down to Skibereen to get the car back and that's if they have a 19" tyre in stock down in VW Skib. All in total about 2.5 hrs between the tyre going pop to getting back home.

So I hope the tyre is the only issue and the alloy isn't buckled/cracked.

I'll definitely be going about getting a space saver spare wheel just in case it happens again.

    Lesson definitely learned.

    Ouch Gav! 🙈

I thought I was looking at a similar problem last weekend. Hit a sunken manhole and there was a good bang. Pulled over expecting to see the worst but I got away with it. Tyre and wheel un marked. I did get a low pressure warning later the same day which had me fearing hidden damage but I checked them and reset the warning and it didn’t go off since 🤷‍♂️

The lack of a spare is a pain in a situation like that. There isn’t a Jack or a wheel brace either… I’ve a proper trolley Jack ordered myself but it won’t be something you’d throw in the boot.

I wonder will your wheel be repairable?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

I'm hoping its just a tyre replacement, I'll take the 150-200quid hit for that.

Id rather not swallow a new alloy on top of that too, the front face of the alloy had a tiny nick and no obvious damage inside the rim but couldn't see behind the back side of it.

I was lucky there was a garage close by that I could throw the car into off the road and grab a bathroom break and a few refreshments.

There was a tyre centre in Bantry too but this being Ireland, theres no hope of them being open on Sunday. Theres also a mobile fitter in the city that operates on Sundays and after hours but no hope of getting him down that far and no guarantee he'd even have the tyre in stock.

Ill get a space saver sorted or maybe even a full size spare too, a replica from CM Wheels or somewhere similar to keep me ticking over if something happens like that again.

Just a very unlucky scenario but that's the joys of motoring. 🤷

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,169 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

"but this being Ireland, theres no hope of them being open on Sunday"

This bugs the **** out of me. Do people not drive on a Sunday? Do people not get punctures on a Sunday?

A neighbour of mine damaged a wheel here in louth and contacted the local co co and got a refund for the damage to his wheel fyi

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

I dont expect every place to be open but would be nice alright to have an option.

I went to a place one Saturday a few months back without a booking and was waiting a good 60mins to get a tyre for her own car.

Guy said Saturday was manic as people were working during the week, even during covid so couldn't get up to them and Saturday was usually their busiest day of the week.

I'm not even going go down the Co. council route, tbh it's just a load of hassle and I was probably a good 500m/1km up the road before I stopped and inspected the tyre so finding the culprit in the weather was going to be difficult and probably unsafe on a N road in the conditions.

I'll swallow the cost and moan about for a few days.

    EDIT

I'm probably more annoyed at myself, I knew there was no spare or space saver so there was always a risk. She got great kick out of saying "I told ya so" and "Why's there no spare in an expensive car".

Which went down like a lead balloon while waiting for the tow truck and taxi. 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭JoeA3

They removed the spare, toolkit etc, all as part of getting weight down for emissions. I don’t think a spare is fitted to any new VW now. You can buy the whole kit as an optional accessory from VW, incl the Jack etc

apparently the tyres are less prone to minor punctures these days (self sealing?!) but that’s not much good to you when you hit an Irish pothole.

There is a can of gunk and an air compressor in the boot alright but again not much use in a blowout situation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,627 ✭✭✭ILikeBoats

Sorry to hear that Gav. Definitely a pain not having the spare.

Must have been the weekend for it. I was driving in Dublin city on Friday night, there was roadworks in Drumcondra and the had a chunk dug out of the road. There may have been signage but I didn't see it and hit the square edge of the tarmac. I wasn't going fast but it was enough to make me pull over just to check the tyre and wheel. Luckily nothing but gave me a fright.

All sorted now but I've to wait until tomorrow to get the car back, they couldn't source a tyre locally until this afternoon.

Makes no odds to me anyway, was in no hurry to go down. 🤷

There's a spare in the Mk 4 Leon anyway, and that's based on the Mk 8 Golf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 499 ✭✭Beanmachine

Hi, I will be changing my car in Jan/Feb and I’m looking at Golf R’s or maybe an M140i. What spec would you consider a must/should have on a Golf R?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭JoeA3

There’s loads of advice/tips in this thread for that question.

The car is pretty well spec’d as standard. The more sought after / must have options would be:

    • 19” Pretoria wheels
    • dynamic chassis
    • winter pack

Majority of them are DSG and it’s probably most sought after, manual is fairly rare.

buy on overall condition, mileage etc, then spec imo.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,889 ✭✭✭hooch-85

Joe is right, buy on condition, mileage is important but it's not the be all and end all. My car had highish miles for the year when I was buying but it was in great condition and still is.

A mate has recently bought a low mileage Jap import and while it's in good condition he must have a few grand spent on it in the first two months just bringing it up to standard. I've less spent on mine in nearly two years of ownership.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 499 ✭✭Beanmachine

Thanks for the replies, Yeah I usually buy low mileage example cars. DSG would be the only option for me really as I do a lot of city driving and my last two cars have been auto. I probably won’t ever go back to a manual daily. Leather seats seem to be fairly rare? The last time I had cloth seats was in a mk4 GTI so again would probably opt for leather. Pretoria’s would also be my preference. Do they come with reversing camera’s as standard?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Reverse camera not standard but vast majority of Irish cars would have it as it tended to get bundled into most of them in a “tech pack”.

keyless entry is also quite common, again part of that tech pack I think

I had leather in mine, I wasn’t that keen on the look of the cloth but in hindsight I wouldn’t have bothered and spent (a big chunk of change) on another option. The cloth is nicer looking in the 7.5 if you’re going that new. (172 onwards).

  • Registered Users Posts: 56 ✭✭Cetera

Sorry to hear that Gav. The wet weather at the moment is hiding all these sniper potholes. Hopefully, the wheel will be ok.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,026 ✭✭✭User1998

Do tyre fitters and mechanics working 6 days a week not deserve a day off?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

No issues with the wheel anyway so that's something.

Only problem was they had no Hankook available in VW and the locals have nothing but middle of the road in the same tyre profile. 🙄

I can wait a week for a Hankook or get the car tomorrow with something half decent, I'll take the hit and just take what given, if it was VW in the city I'd leave it with them but don't fancy driving down to Skib at the end of the week and be car-less.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,169 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

It'll shock you to know shops and restaurants are open 7 days a week.

    Crazy i know...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

Just cause you are working a Sunday doesn't mean you were working 7 days a week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

Tyre sales aren't really comparable to groceries or a dinner out though are they.

People need groceries, people enjoy dinner out.

I'd say demand for new tyres on a Sunday is miniscule, it's hard enough to sell tyres on a weekday. Surely if it was lucrative, more workshops would be doing it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,295 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

Getting off topic here but yeah people working weekends likely aren't working 7 days a week. If they are it's not normal.

People working Sundays are also required to get paid a higher wage even if it's their normal schedule.

We're not one of those countries where everything is closed on Sundays so it's annoying when something is closed especially if you need something before going back to work on a Monday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭JoeA3

I don’t think Gav expected to find a 24 hour tyre shop in rural West Cork to be fair. VW roadside “assist” leaving me on hold for an hour would be far more irritating tbh.

Can we get back on topic. Please 🙏

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,026 ✭✭✭User1998

Well most tyre shops are usually only 2 man operations and you’d need 2 staff on at all times. So in this case it would mean they are working 7 days a week.

Fair enough a big franchise like Quik Fit etc could probably open but tyre shops are completely different to a grocery store with loads of staff and part timers covering the weekend shifts

And tradesmen like mechanics etc have always been off on a Sunday and I don’t think that should change just so Mary can get some new tyres on a Sunday morning…

Sorry guy just realised this is the Golf thread, thought it was Motors

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

There's no need to apologise, the site should be so lucky anyone is posting 🙂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,169 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

You don't expect roadside assistance in VW to fully staffed on Sundays now, do you 😉

Anyway, like you said, back on topic 😊 this is how I pictured it happened...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,799 ✭✭✭maddness

Two very different cars. I’ve had both and the Golf R is the more complete package and far quicker over a challenge backroad than a M140i and much much better in the winter. But…the M140i is far more special than the R, makes a fantastic noise and is a lot faster stock (in the dry anyway) and a more challenging driving experience. I’d have the BMW over the Golf but both are fantastic cars and I’d happily swap my little Fiesta ST for either in a heartbeat.

Regarding Golf R spec I’d recommend the Dynoaudio if you can find a car with it as the standard sound is terrible, otherwise leather lifts the cabin and I’d a sunroof in my second one and it was great too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 56 ✭✭Cetera

What are people’s views on “running in” a new performance car? I’ve read everything from: “modern engines do not need a run in period” to “keep the rpm below 4,500 for the first 1000 miles”.

I’ve never had a brand new performance car before, so totally clueless about this topic.

Basically, I want to give launch control a lash!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

I don't have a performance car but I do have a new car and they said in the manual in glove box to not rev it high or drive at high speeds for at least 3000 kms. I'm pretty sure it's the same for a VW.

On that topic if you buy a super/hyper car they are already broken in on a engine dyno. So from the second you drive it you can drive it as hard/fast as you want.

If id just spend a big wedge of my hard earned on a new GTI or R I’d give it 1000kms before I driving it hard.

  • Registered Users Posts: 56 ✭✭Cetera

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 793 ✭✭✭Zurbaran

I’m pretty sure there is no evidence that running in is needed in modern engines. What is important is waiting for any car to get up to temperature before revving out but I reckon we all know that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭JoeA3

You’re enjoying it! I only hit 1000 over the last weekend. I haven’t driven it too hard tbh, but have given it a few darts. No launches yet though!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,889 ✭✭✭hooch-85

I did 2k in the first week of ownership when I bought a new ST in 2016😄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,026 ✭✭✭User1998

Volkswizard on Youtube always seems to run in his engines and does a run in service after 700 miles or so

  • Registered Users Posts: 56 ✭✭Cetera

Yeah, I think I’ll start opening it up a little bit more now 😃 I’ll give the launch control a blast over the weekend.

I’m absolutely loving the car. Any chance I get, I’m either collecting or dropping off! It does attract a lot of tailgating/up my hole sort of driving from every second boy racer, but that happened in my MK7 R and GTD too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,889 ✭✭✭hooch-85

It's under warranty, drive it on to fu5k would be my school of thought!

By the way, did Pierses ever retail your mk7 R, I didn't see it advertised but maybe they had someone for it seen as good ones are so hard got nowadays. What spec/colour was it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 56 ✭✭Cetera

I actually traded in a VW transporter for the MK8 Golf. I traded in my MK7 for the transporter last year. I have a very colourful vehicle history 😂.

The van was a terrible idea - I think I was slightly mad from lockdown.
