EU Banning the Burning of Turf in ROI

I understand the EU is looking to ban turf burning in ROI. Is there a deadline date for the ban? What steps will the EU take to make sourcing turf difficult and burning it illegal? Have they given any thought to the fact that this will place some people into fuel poverty? Are they any protest groups against the ban? Also are there any other EU nations that will be affected by the ban? Do they have protest groups that can unite with those in the Republic to stop this insanity?

The country is called 'Ireland' first of all. Secondly, why would anyone protest in favour of more respiratory illness in children and more deaths. You must not have thought about the issue beyond the end of your nose. Burning turf is already banned in council areas that make up the majority of Ireland's population and I think anyone who knows what it's like walking around midland towns in winter will be supporting it.

The question is what real government policy is going to make alternative sources of heat available to people who currently depend on it.

First of all, you have the honour of being the first bumptious person I have received a comment from. Secondly, I understand the Island of Ireland. That would include my Irish relations in Belfast. But you live in ROI. They live in the UK.

Have a grand turf fire on now, worked hard saving it last summer, saving turf will be around for many years to come even the D4 Greens realise that at this stage.

Its still a cheap form of heat compared to everything else so most of us don't mind a few days in the bog getting it home.

Nope, I personally love the smell of turf and this lungs faecees is just that. With the very high wind speeds and prevelance across the whole of the country most of the time, the notion that air quality is a long term issue to the point it affects health long-term is a complete nonsense. The air mass over Ireland is probably flushed and refreshed 4-5 times a day, most days. Guess why Ireland is so often cited for it's potential for wind generated electricity.

There are isolated houses all over Connemara and there just isn't an air quality argument for them.

I know there is an air quality testing station near Carna, in Galway, which regularly records the cleanest air in Europe - must be lying.

I'd be particularly interested in the number of days in a year when levels are above acceptable limits. The sound of the wind howling in my stove and outside, at the moment, is pure irony. I have just recorded it for you:

I live in the midlands. Funilly enough, there are turbines to the north, south and east, not to mention one in Castletroy.

And the cutaway bogs of the midlands once harvested by Bord na Mona are currently being transformed into windfarms too. Plenty of wind,otherwise they wouldn't be putting them up.
