Agreed. This kind of story is like pornography for some. They latch on and you can see they are getting off on it, being able to be racist with what they think is plausible deniability but you don't see them having the same level of intensity (or any at all) when the same crimes are committed by white people. Some even hunt out stories like this and post them, any kind of crime committed by a non-white person is hunted down and posted. The same crimes by white people are not mentioned. This was a great opportunity to generalize all Nigerians as fraudsters and no surprise to see that being done.

I don't think citizehship should be conditional on anything - once you have it, that's it, you have it.

But I don't have any problem with making it more difficult to earn.

We have enough scamming **** in this country we don't need more. Out.

They won't because the Govt is afraid that the Bleeding Hearts brigade will be out yelling racism and discrimination. They'll probably just get a bigger Council House and more Welfare Benefits.

Total BS. It does not matter how you obtained Irish citizenship, if you commit a crime against the state the punishment must be the same. It the crime is so severe in your eyes then you should have no problem tossing the people into prison for life, other wise you are just a racist.

The same people who whinge about Garlic man getting jail time would be screaming for public floggings for these guys.

There is also the outdated notion that citizenship obliges someone to loyalty and fidelity to a country. That the act of being (or becoming) a citizen, places upon you a moral and social obligation to be willing to lay down your life in defence of the country and to be the best citizen that you can be.

Nonsense, of course. No Irish person goes to the US and gets citizenship because they have a deep devotion to the US flag and US culture. They do it because having to renew your visa is a pain in the hoop.

This is also why people get Irish citizenship; to make paperwork easier.

The notion that being an Irish citizen is contingent on not breaking the law is beyond laughable.

Yeah but you see, they never used the N word, so there is no evidence they are racist.

At least that's what their defense boils down to.

Our own fault for having 20 layers of disconnected bureucracy in each of 100 departments communicating with each other on request.

Just to put something in perspective:

    National Debt: €240,000,000,000

    PUP Fraud: €183,000

I think that's about 0.000007% of the money we owe.... this is Literally nothing in the grand scheme of things.

No you can't strip people of citizenship, but christ it is tempting sometimes.

This was quite an organised little scam that pulled in a huge haul of money and I note they did not identify their accomplices.

I guess they will not be featured in this week's "new to the parish" column in the Irish Times?

I would to ask those calling for stripping of citizenship what layers of 2nd class citizenship they propose?

I am being very serious about the question.

    1. Shall we strip people born in Northern Ireland of Citizenship if convicted of a crime.
    2. Shall we strip people born in the US of Irish born parents of Citizenship if convicted of a crime.
    3. Shall we strip people born in the EU with no Irish ancestry if convicted of a crime.
    4. Shall we strip people born in Britain with Irish ancestry if convicted of a crime.
    5. Shall we strip my nephew because he happened to be born in Miami but only lived there for 1 month as baby if he is convicted of a crime.

Who is acceptable to class as a 2nd class citizen and who should decide.

Was it really a big scam?

    I mean like REALLY?

    lets to the maths....

Assuming they got the max rate €350

PUP was paid from March 2020 to Nov 2021 (20 months / 84 weeks)

    €183,000 / 84 / 350 = 6.2

So in reality, they probably managed to get 7 or 8 names and used them to claim PUP, probably names of people that were once resident here and went home.

It's literally a drop in the ocean.

Yeah they should be punished with a custodial sentence or pay all the money back, but this isn't news. The only thing that makes this news is the fact the accused are black.

There's PLENTY of white people on the take.

its simple really. If you are using this story to claim, or to use as proof, that all Nigerians are theives or scammers etc etc then ya, you are racist (or possibly just xenophobic)

Bit like the small minority in England in the 70's, 80's who thought that all micks were terrorists....

If, on the other hand, you are saying that these two specific fellas are aholes and should be locked away and then deported becuase of what they did, then there is nothing racist about that. You are judging people becuase of their actions as oppsoed to where they came from or what colour their skin is.

It still amazes me that people are too fcuking dumb to figure out on their own if they are or are not being racist.

Having said that there is loads of studies that link low intellegence with racism, so maybe I shouldn't be that suprised.

You'd have to think that the PUP fraud conducted by people born in Ireland also cost the state a lot more than €183,000.

Still Sweet F.A relative to what we owe!

This country is in serious trouble with regards debt, and they're already starting to look for people to blame.

€19.8M claimed fraudulently yet we zoom in on a mere fraction of that cause they're black.

Blaming minorities is the easiest thing to do.

Look around you boys and girls! We've 2 banks bailing out, Infrastructure is in a heap, we cant get staff to do jobs that no one wants to do anymore (people have now realised they're worth something now). House prices are rocketing, rent through the roof, fuel and electricity prices climbing rapidly.

Have we all forgotten what happened in 2008? It's literally the exact same thing.

Your argument is up there with ‘we have Irish murderers’ ‘we have Irish rapists’ as if that’s some reason to import and give citizenships out like lucky bags.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,830 ✭✭✭✭Donald Trump

That comes across as a bit innocent tbh.

Surely you can see the difference people might make between someone we are stuck with, and have to manage i.e. our own wasters and someone who comes begging and pretends they need help, and then after helping them for years they decide to repay your generosity by ripping you off.

We are stuck permanently with one of these fellas from what I read. The other one we are not stuck with and he should be put out.

BTW, one contribution to rising house prices is local authorities bidding against you with bottomsless purses because they need to buy houses to put people in. That is a very good thing when it is needed. But you might not like it if you keep getting outbid by them on houses you want if the people they are putting into those houses are scammers who had no status here but someone else decided should be let into the country because they spun a good yarn.

Erm what about Irish scammers? We had a guy in cork last week claiming both his dead parents pension with 33 yrs !!! Something serious wrong with system when this happens. He was released on bail and given free legal aid too for good measure.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,793 ✭✭✭FunLover18

Sorry, I agree with you, the point I was trying to make is that the money these men stole was nothing compared to the overall PUP fraud going on in this country, largely perpetrated by "ethnically Irish" yet these two have a whole thread dedicated to them.

I absolutely abhor fraud of any type, but if you think about it, you and I are equally lucky to have been born here in the first place.

It may be intuitively appealing to some to weaponise citizenship, but legally and ethically it seems a dead end.
