The mini-puzzle in every game of where are the subtitle settings located (video, audio, game settings) and they're always set to off when I always have them on.

PGA 2K21 and quitting to the main menu is a bit of pain in the arse as well I think. There's only certain points you can do it at as far as I can tell.

The x and o turnaround is a really scummy move, winds me up so much that I need to play a round of golf to calm me down

Interesting case study on PS5 and Series X UI

It's a pity the switch wasn't included for comparison. It also has a bespoke UI.

Yeah sometimes if I wanna play something immediately I'll always have a cartridge-console plugged in. Mega SG kicks all sorts of ass. I love it.

Achtualeyyyyyyyy 😂 you can change the control scheme in those games so that you don't have to play in a tank context (at least; Desert Strike allows it).

You say change the controls. I call it cheating 😎

Started the Forgotten City the other night and wasn't really feeling it, was a bit wordy was my initial thought. By god I'm hooked now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,031 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

To be honest, I only played the first Desert Strike on Amiga and think only made it to the second level. The "Over here" calls still haunt me to this day.

Though not as much as the Archimedes escort mission from Spartan Total Warrior on PS2. "Spartan, help me!" That was more than a trivial annoyance.

I was gonna mention heliborne but I thought it died a death shortly at launch and never really took off. Seems like another armoured warfare scenario, a game everyone says is dead but is still sort of going. I did like Heliborne's multiplayer design that had some players running specifically transport choppers to drop off infantry to capture points and set up AT and AA nests. Shame other online vehicle combat games featuring helicopters didnt try to embrace something similar (glares at War thunders top tier helicopter disaster)

I have to play that but first I must finish Prey. Forgotten City is suppose to be short which is good as I want to play GTA San Andreas once that releases.

I rolled credits on the canon ending to Forgotten City tonight, and that was an immensely satisfying epilogue. Can't really say much for spoilers. I will say though I have bit of an Assassin's Creed taste in my mouth after it and in a good way, not that the gameplay was anything like one of those games really but maybe

the fact you are dealing with a God and there was a modern day bit at the end.

That's on my Christmas list, can't wait to give it a try. When you say Assassin's Creed, do ya men the overall atmosphere or you feel like playing some of the older AC games again?

I'd say its the greek/roman setting with fancy skirts... gameplay is fairly different. But FC is class, I don"t usually go for these type of games but glad I took a chance on this, even though its a timeloop with repeating the same level the way you gain extra knowledge each time to change how you approach the next loop is fantastically well done

It's nothing like AC except it has greeks and romans of that time but when I'd finished it's story it made me think of AC where that series was in it's story years ago and where this game went and ended.

I was just thinking about the avengers game yesterday as i read a supposed leak about the next year's worth of content and wondered why are they keep going with it, it's just a failure of a game, move on instead of trying to force it to work. Nothing they do or add will make it a success.

Even the GotG game just released, looks like a complete meh out of 10 game but it's being praised for being a single player game. That shouldn't be a bonus feature of a game.

Imagine avengers in the story driven insomniac Spidey universe.

Too much money sunk into it I'd say.

Also Ubisoft have managed to salvage games from poor launches as well. R6 Siege for instance. So it's not too crazy to think they can save it although it looks like they are going about it in totally the wrong way.

Square Enix have form with this kind of thing though, I remember the results that came out just after the Tomb Raider remake and Hitman Absolution (I think) came out, and they just slammed the performance of the two games, but never had a hint of self reflection at the fact that they set them completely unrealistic targets. It was something like "while these games have sold in the region of 3 million copies combined, they clearly did not met out target of 13 million", really ridiculous stuff. Maybe it was the second Deus Ex actually?

Sounds like similar here, and I'd wonder how long they're going to persist with it. As mentioned above, Ubisoft have really turned some of their games around from a really rocky start, R6 Siege joined The Division in being turned around.

While Ubi are to be commended for turning around Siege and Division, they've also had more limited success with the likes of For Honor and Ghost recon. which ended up being well supported and gathering their own cult fanbases with those who were willing to stick with it.

but I think peoples patience is wearing thin on it - there's too many games vying for attention and not enough hours in the day to give them all a fair shake. They seem to have done a good job on Riders Republic which is getting fairly solid praise, but the backlash against XDefiant and the GR battle royale were pretty savage, not to mention that other BR whos name escapes me right now.

The whole thing of releasing a new IP, alongside a battle pass / season pass etc, is very off putting. - like, let us play it first and see if we like it before pushing all these other doodads on us.

I wouldn't even say it's unrealistic targets that SE are to blame for, it's the whole Games As A Service model for a premium AAA title. A game like that can't serve both styles. The game itself, I'm actually impressed with what Crystal Dynamics did with it. The gameplay was okay, the control system considering the various different characters and styles it had to accommodate was well designed. The progression system was deeper than it seemed, and the main story and characters were well done.

But there was a lot missing that stopped it being a proper premium title because it was trying to be a GAAS game, but it also didn't have nearly enough content to serve as that either, with instead a lot of promises of what was to come down the line (which inevitably got delayed and changed due to initial reception and teething issues). And I'm sure most of the content they've added since has probably been great, but it's not enough to encourage people to return, especially with the changes to xp, p2w elements.

The fault for all of that lies with Square Enix rather than Crystal Dynamics imo and it's a shame to see SE try to say CD were the problem.

What happened with it was that they obviously bought the license for a huge amount of money then to recoup that money looked at the biggest game at the time (Destiny) and said they want to make a Destiny game to maximise their profits.

Except GaaS titles take a very long time to make and in the time between Avengers going into production and being released, the GaaS sector became both saturated and also become unfashionable and replaced with Battle Royale or whatever the flavour of the week is now.

Now imagine if they took one of the biggest licenses at the moment and just let the guys be creative with it and make a good solid single player experience up to GoW standards how much money it would have made and they could bank on a style that never goes out of fashion.

    It reeks of management interference.

Shin Megami Tensei V embargo has been lifted and it's getting rave reviews:

They wouldn’t have even had to completely ditch their whole monetisation plan. They could have launched it as a huge AAA single player game with a multiplayer mode that they could build over time. Kinda like GTA5 or something. The worst part is that when you play the campaign it almost functions as a single player experience but the GAAS nonsense starts creeping in and ruins it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,845 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

They trick is to make a good game people want to play for years. Then add the extra gaas stuff to extend it.

But so many seem so focused on building the gaas parts they forget to make the good game people want to play.
