So here we go first race of a triple header of Mexico, brazil and then finally eh...Qatar. Max Verstappen leads Lewis Hamilton by 12 points in the drivers, Mercedes lead Red bull by 23 points in the constructors, The battle for 3rd in the constructors is a very tight affair with Mclaren leading Ferrari by 3.5 points so plenty of things to keep an eye on throughout the weekend.

I think Perez after a good showing in USA will be needless to say keen to impress on home soil, on what is regarded as a "red bull track". Probably looking at a few more PU changes throughout the grid so could have a mixed grid come Sunday. Should be a cracker of a race!

    Cool Picture.

But I often think this level of invisible technology and driver work is a problem for F1. They can change such important things like brake differential between corners and loads of things that change how the car behaves during the race and the audience can't even see it or appreciate it. From the driver's perspective it's great that they can change the car between corners and make sure it's planted from one corner to the next. But I think I would prefer if the cars were set up and left to fend for themselves. It would mean cars would be faster in some corners than others and might create the mismatches that promote overtaking or mistakes.

As El_Dud has said, this is the problem with F1 in a nutshell. I really wish the cars were more basic.

As for this race, I think it will be another close one. And the question marks over the Merc engines, that still lingers.

The merc engine has proven to be the least reliable this year which is a big change from the last few years.

I've seen some coverage of the merc turbo situation and I don't fully understand it bit I think it's basically a case of the turbos being limited to x RPM. Mercedes is able to run their's at the max all the time where others don't and that is part of the powerful package Mercedes has. But in Mexico the track is at altitude and the air is thinner. The others can increase the RPM of their turbo and allow a bit more cooling to cope, but Mercedes doesn't have that freedom because they already run at full pelt. So Mercedes will just have to make do with less air than normal in the turbo system but the others can compensate for the thinner air and give up a small bit of aero through the additional cooling.

Maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong in that, but that's my understanding.

Checo out of FP1 already, didn't see it but think he went off.

Correction, he went off, they thought he did more damage to the suspension than he actually did. They repaired it, he's back in.

That is pretty much it, their turbo works well at most tracks, with Mexico and Brazil being the exception due to the altitude. You can see as well all the teams running huge wings but they only generate Monza levels of DF.

Merc could run into issues with heat from their turbo as well, it has to work extra hard and that can cause it to overheat. They either have to risk that or compensate by running it at a lower level.

Lewis and Kimi summoned to stewards for not going around the cone before returning to the track after going off at turn 1

Had completely forgotten about Mexico this weekend, I like the evening/night start times for us here as I actually get to see every session

It's nice to have the evening races this time of year, something to shorten the long evenings.

Nice to see the banter with the twitter admins.

Was there a change made to the Merc engine that's made it much less reliable? Even up til last season they seemed to have a good half second a lap in hand for qualifying, before that it was even more. I know the other teams are allowed use all engine maps the works team has but it seems pretty weird to me that they're all having problems.

It's explained in the general thread but Mercedes run there Turbo at full revs and since this race is at high altitude it is harder on the Mercedes engines but the other teams can just turn there engines up a bit to cope with the higher altitude.

I mean more in general. They mentioned on comms that every Merc team has had an extra engine at this point of the season. Is there something different from previous seasons that's made them less reliable than the other manufacturers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,775 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

I wonder how many cars haven't had an additional engine so far this season.

This year they're set in a single engine mode from quali and through the race. In previous years they were able to adjust engine modes mid race, and they also won races easily. So they would probably turn down the engine when they were miles ahead or stuck in a position without anyone near them. Maybe that's part of it.

Both Max and Lewis have taken one additional ICE each. Did Max started form the back? If so he must have taken more than just the ICE where Lewis only took a 10 place penalty.

Alpine seem to be going through a lot of engines too which is very dissapointing. Hopefully they will be more reliable next year.

I expect either Sergio or Max on pole here. Would love to see Sergio get it and then win would be delighted for him and then Max in 2nd.

Red Flag with Stroll smashing into some barriers.

At least Lance will have a short 'stroll' back to the pitlane.

Whats wrong with the rear of Max's car?

Think they were working on the rear wing or putting on extra bit of downforce on and some precautionary work and a gurney flap seemingly for extra downforce.

Awe no not Carlos. Hopefully it is OK.

Well the old turn it off and on again seems to work even on an F1 car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,732 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

A difficult lap and Lewis goes P-1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,732 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

And the max goes and does that to go P-1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,749 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

    Max smashes it.

It didn't look comfortable for Lewis, couple of lock ups and plenty of kerbs.

What did the Spinner’s engineer say?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,732 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Oh tension at haas. No they aren’t having a laugh.

Getting all excited about Alonso getting a tow when he was going about as fast as Sainz was when he had no power.

Must have been some tow from Alonso!

What did the engineer snap back at Mazepin? Those guys usually have the patience of a saint. Russell in trouble now but tricky on them when they're at the end of the pit lane and all queuing up outside

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,749 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

The only bit I can remember was "No we are not having a laugh, stay behind and make a gap" - words to that effect.

Sky reckoned there was something more as they mentioned the chain of command and the next lad on the radio would be Gunter Steiner - but they may have been making that up for effect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,732 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Mazepin was asking to get past his teammate and his engineer told him to stay where he was to which he asked “are you having a laugh ?” His engineer said he wasn’t and maybe someone else knows exactly what was said after that because I didn’t hear it clearly.

Didn't Williams do similar earlier this season?

    Bottas in the 15's.

Max needs to pull something out of the bag on his last run - complaining that the back of the car is sliding.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 34,264 CMod ✭✭✭✭ShamoBuc

Bit of pressure on Red Bull now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 516 ✭✭✭Lawlesz

Wow, that was unexpected. Did Perez go rougue and not give Max a tow or what? He was just slightly too far along.

How many cock uos have we had from Crofty today, he got all muddled a few kind ago between FP2 and Q2 and then Max not lifting off after Bottas crash in 2019. Not an easy job, but you get the impression he turns up in the comms box 5 mins before start time asking where they are racing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,749 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

    Redbull going for a tow,

    Mercedes going for track evolution.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,749 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

Pressure gets to Perez and the Merc's are going quicker still.
