Where is this number plate from?

There are 4 more numbers behind the blue. The current year-county-nth registered car system came into place in 1987, the Discovery wasn't launched until 1989 so it's unlikely to be from that long ago. Is it from a UK channel Island? Isle of Man?

That's an Irish reg plate.

ZV numbers are available for vehicles over 30 years old on first registration in Republic of Ireland

Interesting. So does that 30 year threshold keep moving forward? For example can I get a ZV plate for a 1992 car next year?

Yep, I think that's how it works.

If I remember rightly, when they introduced them first you had to take a ZV number for a while, but now you have the choice of the year/county/number format, or a ZV number, if the car is over 30.

I would imagine someone has put a Discovery body on a Defender chassis and the registered part (the chassis) is over 30 years old. I have seen this a few times and think I may have seen the one from the OP's picture around the place as well.

Of course it can, it's been told several times before. The reg is tied to the chassis number, fit new body to old chassis and voila.

It was the other way around. You had to take a year/county reg but the classic vehicle enthusiasts lobbied the government to allow a for a more fitting format for older vehicles. Unfortunately people are still requesting them for post 1987 vehicles over 30 years old (1987/1988/1989/1990/1991) which doesn't make sense as the new system was in by then.

Yes but the ZV followed by 5 digits look ridiculous too considering that pre '87, the maximum characters allowed on a plate was 6. When the ZV series reached 9999, they should have introduced another prefix.

Yes have to say thank zv looks crap on cars after 1986 theres a late80s Mercedes 230ce near me and it looks stupid with zv plates . Only Dublin has problem with long numbers and have to say that doesn't look great either

Regarding the zv discoveries in am amazed at the prices they go for . Are the parts taken from crashed discovery 2's ?

I still think the ZV is least worse option on any year.

I agree a different prefix would have been a good idea.

At the same time there are plenty of unissued pre-87 series numbers which could be offered to classic owners and also a lot of disused numbers from cars long scrapped.

They could be sold at a premium thus bringing in a bit of revenue.
