I had been following this case but I didn't know that the prosecution had said in court that Stephen McKinney had poured bottled water over himself to make it appear that he had tried to rescue Lu Na.

Given the circumstantial nature of the prosecution's evidence, I made no prediction about the jury's verdict. What I find difficult to comprehend is that an Irishman who had married an East Asian woman would seek to control her - given that I believed that any Irishman who committed coercive control (although that offence has not yet been created by law yet in Northern Ireland) would not be attracted to a woman who is of Asian or African ethnicity because I believe that an element of racism is part of a bully of indigenous ethnicity in Western Europe.

My point is that one would think that the fact that McKinney lived in China for some time and got married to a Chinese woman and had children with her indicates that he's more enlightened than those Irishmen who are abusive to Irishwomen with whom they have intimate relationships.

Generally, an abusive Irishman is unlikely to be interested in having an intimate relationship with an Asian or African woman.

Lol, have you met some of the Irish slumming it in China hoofing Yanjing and Baijiu on the daily? They're not exactly Marco Polo and enlightened isn't the first word to come to mind. Many of them would have peculiar relationships with the native women as well.

I only looked at a few articles, but the prosecution’s accusations of him being abusive and controlling seem to be based on the testimony of a witness who claimed to have an affair with the wife. No evidence of the affair being real either. A strange story with some questionable evidence.

And to comment on the OPs strange race idea: “importing” a foreign partner to your home country can make them easier to be controlled and isolated, as they will have less of a support network. Makes perfect sense. Though I am not saying that this is what the accused did here.

My point is that one would have assumed previously that a Western European man who lives in China for a while and gets married to a Chinese woman is less likely to be controlling because one would have thought that his stay in China would indicate that he was more enlightened, given that philosophy and spirituality have been prominent in China throughout the country's history.

I think you could just as easily argue that some Irish (and other western) men who marry a woman from a society where women are traditionally less valued than in the west are doing so precisely because they believe that Asian women will be more easily controlled than mouthy Irish women.

How well that works out for them is probably a different question. RIP to that poor lady. It's horrendous to think any man would do that, and to the mother of his children as well. Even if he no longer loved her, how could he deprive his children of their mother?

I'm not saying that they cannot be guilty of abuse but I think that they are, in general, less likely to commit abuse. In my opinion, in most cases, the abuser is a man who is of a brutal background, e.g. Fred West. Well-educated perpetrators (e.g. Alan Hawe) are not as numerous.

After the verdict, it was written in the Sunday World that McKinney was obsessed with oral sex and forced his wife to perform oral sex on him and to have sex with other men - so the information couldn't have entirely come from that witness.

That's fine, but what are you basing your opinion on? How do you factor in people who might be better or worse at the game? You don’t seem to realise what defines a suitable person to be used, but I might be wrong here.

There haven't been many cases in the British Isles in which East Asian women were murdered by their white husbands. I haven't heard of any other man on the island of Ireland murdering an East Asian woman he was married to either.
