Can I just ignore a "Transfer to collection agency letter"?

I am having an issue with Bord Gais. My wife had handled all our bills but she passed away a few weeks ago. When I went to sort out our account with bord Gais they said they couldn't talk to me because of the freedom of information act. She's the named person on the account. Even though my name is on the bill too. So what I did is setup my own account and canceled hers. They said I would need to pay what was left on that account. I had recently paid the old bill so there was only three weeks into the new cycle.

When the bill came it was for nearly two thousand euros. Clearly a mistake. We average about €150 at most I've been on to them three times. Which is pain because you're on hold for almost an hour each time. They agreed that it was a mistake. I followed their instructions and emailed them twice with a timed stamped photo of the meter. I've even sent a web texted asking if this has been sorted. I heard nothing back. But, now I've received a letter "Transfer to Collection agency/ solicitor. In the letter They claim THEY have contacted me on a number of occasions. They haven't. I going through a lot of grief at the moment and don't need this shite.

My question is because she is the account holder (even though my name is on the letter too) Should I just ignore it at let them go after my late wife or am I accountable?

    Thanks

Open to correction here but I know with mobile phone networks once you show death certificate of account holder the amounts due are written off.

Sorry, mods I posted this twice.

My concern is that my name is on the letterhead too. Yet, they wouldn't talk to me about the account from on day one.

First off, my sympathies to you. It's not nice to experience such difficulty following a loss.

I thought you had to be transferred to the bereavement team where they would seek a death-cert and use that to move the account ownership over from your deceased wife? BUt if the debt has now been factored out to a third-party, it may be too late.

If you don't already have a solicitor, mabs.ie have some information on this - perhaps they can help?

It hasn't been sent out to a third party yet. The letter said if I don't pay up it would be.

let them go shite OP. Those debt collectors buy debts for a few cent on the euro and then chase you for it to make their money. they've no power whatsoever and won't take you to court despite the threats, especially for a small amount.

usually letters like that are sent automatically as well, ignore it and continue to communicate with Bord Gais on the matter.

Surely this needs to be dealt with along with the other issues in your wife's estate. Did she have a will? Who's the executor?

There is no will it's just me and my son. There are no outstand loans/depts apart from our mortgage. We only buried her last week so I haven't dealt with issues of the estate yet. The fact that they are looking for two thousand euros' for three weeks use of electricity is nuts. The max 50 euros is what I was expecting pay. I want to get this sorted but Bord Gais is not helping. They've made it hard and frustrating.

Was the account on level pay previously? It is possible (albeit not likely) that the 2k is the actual bill, with level pay having been set far too low previously.

I did eventually get this sorted. The revised bill came to 9 euros'
