shocking effort from conor roberts, should be 2-1 wales.

Cameroon win, meaning Cote d'Ivoire miss out. Such a wasted generation of talent there.

Uruguay losing 2-0 away to Bolivia. They will stay 6th in the CONMEBOL table if that result stays the same, one below the play-off spot.

Bergwijn smashes in a goal for the Dutch. Looks like curtains for Norway.

2-0. Bergwijn puts it on a plate for Depay.

Shame Haaland won't be at the World Cup.

    Fwiw, on world rankings.

    Seeded : Italy (4), Portugal (8), Sweden (17), Wales (19), Russia (33), Scotland (42)

    Un-Seeded : Poland (23), Ukraine (26), Czechia (31), Austria (32), Turkey (39), Nth Macedonia (74)

9 teams in the top 32 looking for places in a 32 team competition, only three can make it. Says a lot about how poorly UEFA is treated.

Would like to see Italy and Portugal get there, though I understand the hilarity factor if they fail. None of the others really excite me, some dour teams who often end up a shambles at the final stages (I'm thinking of you Poland and the money I've lost backing you win groups). Maybe I'll finally forgive the Scots fans for the thumps I got in Celtic Park in the 2016 qualifier and cheer them on?

Argentina have Romero and otamendi as their centre halves and they arę employing The dark arts liberally. Vinicius getting The brunt of The rough treatment. The ref is weak.

vinicius has missed a one on one awfully and cuenha almost scored an effort from The half way line.

How are Austria in the playoffs over Norway and Romania? Is it not a case of remove the results against one team and then see them to balance them out over 8 games?

In their own group, Israel have a better h2h against them too

Usually there is at least 1 country who qualifies who has never played in the World Cup (e.g. Iceland & Panama last time, Bosnia in 2014). With the remaining teams left it's shaping up that all the teams who qualify will have played in previous competitions (unless North Macedonia pull off a major shock)

Nevermind - just realised that there definitely will be one team there who hasn't played in a previous world cup......the hosts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,122 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Ya but the countries that all the hosts players are from have played in previous World Cups 😊

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,463 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

World Cup should be stage for the best, but the like of Ronaldo, Haaland ,Oblak, Salah, Lewandowski, Suarez and many more will not be there, or will have a play off, Haaland will of course not be there, or any Euros, or World Cups ever, What is wrong with a rest of the world side, it's not different that a crap host side getting in for nothing.

the purpose of the world cup is to crown the best international team in the world. Your post shows a lack of appreciation of this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

The World Cup should not be just for the elite, like some self-fulfilling prophecy based on biased seedings, perpetually propagated by re-enforcing the same seedings that punish genuinely "over-achieving" nations like North Macedonia. The true reward for North Macedonia should be an open draw where they have an equal chance with the Italys and Portugals of Europe, who failed to take the advantage their seeding afforded them when the draw was made. You can already tell that Italy, Portugal and probably Russia will be kept apart in the draw.

Here's how I see it going

    Portugal        vs        Austria

    Scotland       vs        Poland

     Italy              vs        Ukraine

    Wales            vs        North Macedonia

    Russia            vs        Czech Rep

    Sweden         vs        Turkey

with the 3 "valued" sides pulling home draws again in the "finals"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,122 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

What makes you think Haaland will never make a tournament.

Are Norway really that much worse than 2012 Ireland or NI for instance or N.Macedonia last year ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,516 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

North Macedonia aren't being punished for their seeding though, it's on their performance within the group. There was nothing to stop them picking up the extra win that would have had them seeded. If it was being based it on world rankings or coefficient or something historic then you'd have a point, but this was all purely on games in this campaign.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

They got more points in this campaign then Portugal

    😉

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,122 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

6 team group so you have to minus the 6 Lichtenstein points

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,463 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

Well he never made the Euros, and now the World Cup, only so much time to play in these tournaments, I think it's a shame, same as Best not making them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,463 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

It would be a victory for football to have a Rest of the World side. .. even if they were to win it. Would bring to much to the table, money, fans, countries

Indeed but you’re still not grasping the fundamental purpose of a World Cup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭ArnoldJRimmer

There are a lot of holes to pick at with a combined side, but I'll stick with a couple.

How fair is it on players who have busted a gut for their countries their whole career to be denied a place in the World Cup Final because they face a 'best of rest' team in a semi final? Or even for a team where success equates to qualifying out of a group?

How much joy would this team take from winning the whole thing or progressing, particularly when they would likely have zero actual fans at the tournament? Do you genuinely think that Haaland, who has his whole career ahead of him, or Ronaldo, who has probably eclipsed Eusebio as his country's greatest ever player, would entertain this idea? We already have plenty of examples of expensively assembled 'super teams' within the Champions League, see PSG/ Real/ Barca/ City at various times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,122 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

The RoW team would have all those fans from Ireland that cheer for Ronaldo against Ireland 😁.

We see the top players 2/3 times a week for their club it's not like the 60s where you only see top foreign players at the WC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

A Rest of the World side would be a circus. There'd almost certainly be massive drama around whether the coach was picking too many players from his country or confederation. Then there would be the difficulty issue of getting a squad of strangers, who likely have never played together before to come together to form a team in a short period of time- very very difficult. Then there are all the cultural issues. In European teams that have a lot of players from different countries they commonly just adopt the culture of the locality. For a team with no actual base that option wouldn't be there. A lot of players probably wouldn't be bothered either if they got called up. Either they'd see it as an affront to their own nationality or they would have no interest in the hassle of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,205 ✭✭✭fyfe79

I don't think Canada have qualified before? Or maybe they did back in the 70's.

Either way, them beating Costa Rica and Mexico are huge results for them. I'd been keeping an eye on their group and didn't think they'd have it in them to get 6 points from those fixtures. They were well placed before last week to qualify and look odds on now.

Yeah I remember my friend's older brother had the sticker album for Mexico '86 and Canada were in it, which until this campaign, has been my only personal experience of the Canadian men's national team. I've seen the highlights of a few of their home games and they seem to have a really great atmosphere at their games. Fantastic result against Mexico. They'll surely qualify directly now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,286 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

4 of the last 6 games are away from home, but getting 4 points from Mexico is some going.

    ******

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

They're joint hosts of the next world cup. FIFA haven't confirmed yet that the 3 hosts will all get automatic spots. Given that Canada is only supplying 2 of the 16 stadiums for the tournament theirs would be the most precarious spot. Qualifying for the 2022 edition under their own steam might tip the balance in their favour for that decision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,938 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

As an aside does anyone else despise the concept of a "semi-final" and "final" for tournament qualifying playoffs?

What was wrong with the home and away one off fixture?

The only good thing I can think of is it makes it obvious it's far easier to qualify by simply topping your group.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,122 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

It 12 teams for 3 places so explain to me how you do single round home and away.

The only way to do your thing is have some 2nd place but not other go to playoffs which is a sht system. Nothing more unfair than that stupid best placed 2nd or 3rd in a group qualifies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,516 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

'Despise' is a harsh word. I don't particularly like it and would have marginal preference for the old way.

Though at least all the group runner-ups now get a play-off spot - one thing I disliked in the old way that we allocated the 13 places previously (9 group winners qualify, 8 best group runners up into playoffs) with one runner-up missing out completely often because their group was the most competitive.

Another advantage (sort of) is that there are no second leg dead rubbers like when Ireland and Croatia won their first legs 4-0 away for 2012.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,122 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I know it's probably down to money or something but I miss the old 1 leg neutral venue qualifiers.

I always like the random places games end up getting played like Anfield vs Netherlands or Paris vs Spain

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

There were 55 teams which could have been split into 11 groups, with winners only qualifying, plus the two teams that have been "rewarded" for their Nations League victories. Tough love !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

I think UEFA would be against a group winners only scenario because that would mean a lot more dead rubbers for a lot of teams early on.

If they wanted to do a single playoff with 13 spots up for grabs they could have done it with 9 groups. That's how they did it in 2018. However this time they needed to factor in the Nations League in some way so I guess that's how they arrived at the setup that they did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,930 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

It's not impossible that Portugal and Italy could be drawn together in the same path but me thinks they won't

Hope Scotland and Wales don't qualify (pure celtic begrudgery) but have a sneaky feeling one of the 2 could get there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Coverage of the draw is starting from 4pm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

I wonder why they are not doing the CAF play-off draw as well today. I heard there were some petitions to boot teams out but they could still have the draw regardless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

They're doing the Intercontinental draw afterwards (or the draw where three confederations cross their fingers and hope they dodge South America.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Scotland to face Ukraine. Wales to face Austria in Path A. Tricky games.

Potential Scotland vs Wales play-off final would be tasty!

Russia vs Poland and Sweden vs the Czech Republic in Path B.

Italy vs North Macedonia is handy for Mancini. Portugal vs Turkey looks good.

Potential Italy vs Portugal play-off final in Path C. A big team is going out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

Italy and Portugal in the same playoff bracket. That's a disaster for FIFA.
