Formula 1 Grand Prix round 20: Qatar

Rounding off your tri-continental triple header is Qatar for it's inaugural Grand Prix! Your only point of reference to this track is Moto GP races that have raced this circuit before, but I can't be the only one who at a glance is getting Bahrain vibes off it?

What to keep an eye on? Well most positions are settled now bar your championship winner and 1 & 2 in the constructors and P5 in the constructors between Alpine and g̶a̶s̶l̶y̶ Alpha Tauri. Max currently holds a 14 point lead over Hamilton, he ultimately needs a P1 and two P2s in the remaining three races to seal a first championship.

There will be a hearing some time tomorrow between Redbull and Mercedes regarding Mercedes decision to appeal Max not getting a time penalty for pushing Hamilton off track in Brazil, don't be surprised to see something similar play out again here.

    Lets Go!

Always good to see a new circuit on the calendar.

Ducati should be handy around here on that long straight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,409 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Just the one DRS zone so let's hope Max can break away in the middle sector.

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 392 ✭✭RunningFlyer

Looks like it could be a decent track, the layout looks decent once the straight isn’t too powerful for the Mercs (likely).

Super fast corners and medium speed as well. Track might have low grip at the start and then ramp up over the weekend.

It will also be a hot one, even though it is a night race. Ambient temp at night can be 30+, so engines won't be loving the hot air. Pirelli also have the hardest compound in their range here, but the never ending middle part of the track will probably still chew them up.

Can't believe he did it in Null when the cars were totally different

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,799 ✭✭✭SureYWouldntYa

I missed in the first post where the times for the Grand Prix are local time as opposed to our time and thought I would miss it

Qatar are 3 hours ahead of us so quali and the race starts at 2pm our time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,708 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

So that must mean it's a twilight or night race under lights?!

I actually quite like the initial look at the circuit, I think it might be because of the narrower track width than what we're used to from the last 20 years of new builds.

Doesn't look like it'll be great for overtaking but who the hell knows?

Hards look like they're rock solid early doors. Interesting to see a few drivers trying to follow for a few corners, see what's up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,221 ✭✭✭Gaoth Laidir

FYI, Qatar time is 3 hours ahead of us.

I'm not sold on the pitlane entry. I don't like that they'll be accelerating out of the turn and towards the pits before stamping on the brakes.

Stewards need to be crystal clear on track limits this weekend, there’s plenty of cars leaving the track in FP1!

Other than that it’s difficult to call it as a Merc/RB this early. One really long DRS zone but such a narrow track so I’m not sure if the Mercedes’ can carry last weeks advantage into here. Almost feels like if both teams can get their cars performing strategy could play a massive part.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,714 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

I heard one of the teams call Michael Masi to get clarification on track limits. He said he was letting everyone settle in and seeing where they are going off track to gain an advantage before deciding on tack limits. So they'll probably be more clear by the start of FP2 and start deleting times to enforce it.

That's some load of balls. The white line is the limit. There should be no grey areas. Put the white line outside the kerbs if needs be, but anything outside that is off track.

Great to see Hamiltons rainbow helmet this weekend. Making a stand against Qatar and their deplorable human rights record.

Sometimes there are things bigger than sport and this is one of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,714 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

I was wondering about that. It wouldn't be good to be too prescriptive about it and just impose the limits all the time at every corner. When they do thst then people complain that there are too many penalties and they should just let them race.

It's a new track so there's no harm observing the track and driver behaviour and time gained by going over the limits before they make a decision

Fair play to him. I don't like him personally but I admire his social positions. I can't fault him for that.

Qatar are just doing the classic sportswashing. Means absolutely nothing that Seb + Lewis are speaking out. It's better than nothing I suppose 😐️

Breaking news: helmet designs has improved human rights by 2 points, t-shirts coming soon.

Lewis retires from FP1 after experiencing a power unit issue? Thats not a good start

Hmmmm, he complained about being down on power alright but pitted for front wing issues I thought?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,449 ✭✭✭✭Vicxas

Interestingly Riccardo had to retire from Brazil with a failed PU, they also run Mercedes engines. Sky touched on it during the race, but i wonder if theres an issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,282 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

Gasly looking very quick, hoping he continues pace or even quicker through the weekend

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,293 ✭✭✭✭MadYaker

The track looks very fast but difficult to overtake except on the start finish straight. The tyres aren't going to last so maybe it'll be won or lost on strategy. Could be a dull affair but hopefully not.

RB having an issue with the flappy DRS again. Seem to have spent more time trying to stop it flapping around when it's open than doing laps.

Looking like a Merc track. Verstappen losing 0.4 in the slow corners to Hamilton.

Crofty is insufferable, convinced he has a collection of Merc butt plugs with Hamiltons face on them.

This cock-measuring contest between Toto and Horner is boring the tits off me now. If one team complains, then the other suddenly finds an issue to complain about.

Shut up and get on with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,697 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Didn’t one of the McLarens last weekend retire from the race due to a power issue ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,697 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Well they are addressing the issues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,648 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

Are they trying a Mourinhoesque detraction strategy? - away from their drivers that is.

They both seem to love the sound of their own voice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,697 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

I mean sky f1 could stop asking them about this stuff but that won’t happen.

Waring team bosses ? Let’s not go mad Ted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,697 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Okay but when was it taken.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,648 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

    No, they are loving it.

They have more access to team leaders than ever before. Feeding the egos pre, during and post race.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,697 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

So are we going to see this test ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

From listening to Horner it sounds like they have plenty of evidence of Merc’s flexing wing.

Why exactly is Christian Horner allowed to make these accusations in the media? He is standing on TV making public accusations against another team, creating a narrative that suits him. Innocent until proven guilty, no?

I'm thinking a lot less of him now quite frankly, and if I was in a position of power I would be very angry at his actions. Shut the **** up and let the stewards do their jobs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,697 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

well I get the impression that he’s only saying what’s he’s saying because the F1 are doing a test this weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,648 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

Very apt to have George Lucas there,

Star Wars - Sky will be selling it like that.

Will probably turn out that Toto is Max's Father.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,580 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

He doesn't need to say a word of it, the issue is with the stewards and he could let them do their jobs.

He is saying it because he is being very petty and wants to get his digs in at Mercedes, he wants to preach to the crowd that they are cheating. Releasing pictures and giving interviews, why not wait and let the stewards do these tests and see what the results are?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,015 ✭✭✭Hijpo

Much like Herbert and Hill were able to accuse Verstappen of crashing into Hamilton on purpose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,697 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Is mazepin didn’t have bad luck he’d have no luck. That front wing needs a bit of a fix.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,282 ✭✭✭✭Jordan 199

Has Mazepin a damaged front wing? He haas!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,697 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

    That’s fast from Hamilton.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,648 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

    Bottas still showing his pace.

I wonder how much of an advantage the odd numbers have, Brundle mentioned it earlier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,697 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

David Croft was wondering if George Russell would stay 16th despite the sectors being green and his lap not over.
