Has anyone come across a thread for AP Higher competition by any chance? Only found one with no messages. Maybe there’s another one out there I missed

As regards AP Higher, no thread. I checked with PAS and results not out till end of month or start of December. I presume if successfull the next stage will be the same as AP standard.

AP Higher comp results are out. Only top 24 are being invited to next stage.

Said pretty much the exact same stuff in the AP Higher videos - didn't have time to be writing a new script - somehow got a much higher score than for AP standard.

Not sure this is the most objective system, but sure there you go.

No strategic analysis exercise for the next stage, just an interview.

Interviews between 29th November and 3rd December so at least not long to wait around

I went for the AP Higher as a serving AP and it was interesting. I wonder will they go further down the list? I was 48th on this round.

    Hopefully...I'm 47 :-)

Finished my AP standard presentation/interview. I thought it went as I expected it to go - well structured and rapid fire. As long as you practice and have specific competency examples/responses, it goes as well as you can hope it to go. I suppose today is the last day for AP standard, so hopefully results will be out early/mid next results. Fingers crossed!!!

Thanks for the update, I found it to be a very tough interview. I enjoyed the presentation part. Hopefully we will get word next week and I can be put out of my misery!

Hey... I'm presuming this is the first batch through, as in you got called to Stage 2 in mid-September?

Do we know if the interviews are finished now? The waiting is excruciating! Just tell me good or bad!

Yep, also getting butterflies at every text message at this point, would like to be put out of my misery so I can enjoy the hours between 3-5pm again.

I assume that either interviews are continuing this week (if anyone has one please let us know), or that they're taking a bit more time to mark the Strategic Analysis exercise. Could be doing cross moderation, which they should do to be fair.

Bit cheeky emailing us asking us to do the candidate feedback survey! Surely they know we are gonna assume it's results 🙄

Make sure you read them all and check your message board if it says to! I nearly missed a deadline once because I got two texts from them within a couple of minutes, I assumed the 2nd was a duplicate - it wasn't!

    Hello,

Does anybody here have any idea when the next open AP competition might be?

    Thanks,

  • Registered Users Posts: 10 Boardsieboards

I emailed them today and they said results “within the next two weeks”

Several months into next year? There will be plenty of individual AP posts advertised between now and then, though, for somewhat specialist roles.

The original booklet said they don't envision appointments from this panel will happen after 31st July 2023 so I would presume new campaign won't open until late 2022/early 2023 depending on how quickly they exhaust the Dublin panel

Edited to add that PAS are still pulling from the 2020 panels for the majority of the country at the minute and most regional locations haven't been called past stage 1 yet

Oh god, no fear that I wouldn't. Always check them immediately with shaking hands...

Hmm, I wonder are they awaiting the end of the AP Higher interviews which go on until the end of next week.

Would be good to have them next week to be honest, it's been a while.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10 Boardsieboards

Yep like that could be a six week wait for some people. Bit excessive.

Civil Service recruitment requires a lot of patience. I'd say 6 weeks sounds pretty average if you were one of the first interviewees

It's longer than most PAS competitions I've done, but you're definitely right that long waits and very long competitions are the norm for civil service competitions.

It's one of the problems that we face in hiring people from the private sector, especially those with in-demand qualifications and experience in law, ICT, etc. PAS competitions are inevitably focused on eliminating as many candidates as possible with multi stage processes. I know a few from the legal sector who have ultimately gotten frustrated with the process and took other opportunities that presented themselves during that time.

Similarly I know when feedback was sought on the process there was surprise from the hiring depts that candidates saw the process as a major block. These are people who are used to be courted by recruiters who will move heaven and earth to get them in the door. An organisation that instead puts roadblocks in place and won't readily accommodate things like changes of dates where those don't suit candidates is very strange to them, and can frighten someone off if they think that's going to be representative of the culture more generally. Ironically they'd probably get away with this kind of thing during economic downturns when even good people don't have as many options, but the standard thing has been to shut down recruitment at the same time.

Not anything anyone here can do about it, but it's definitely a problem. Obviously an advantage to serving civil servants though who know the process and can generally wait a while longer, and so don't have to compete with those people.

Would anyone have any notes etc. for the competencies? There is a new AP internal competition out and I'm hoping to make my form look somewhat professional!

Only an EO myself, albeit for three months but still eligible for it so I'm thinking why not? Have a decent amount of experience working in Customs.

Had my AP higher interview this morning. I don't think it went well as I felt I didn't really hit the competencies correctly. Chairman finished off with "we wish you all the best, regardless of how this goes" 😂😂 I think that means you seem nice try again another time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 208 ✭✭Steamer

Was it similar to the standard AP interview? Quick fire questioning or more example and questions on that?

Maybe you charmed them so they wished you well. That can be good. I think that’s positive!

  • Registered Users Posts: 23 Ahell

    I

Ah thanks for the vote of confidence. I think i went around the world to make a simple point just didn't hit the structured questions the way I should have. It was a mix of both structured and then random quick fire. It was a nice interview really I think i just forgot I was in an interview instead of a chat 😂ll be better prepared for next time.

Fingers crossed it went better than you expected!

No notes (and if anyone has some I'd love to see them too!) But as for the general approach, you've got the one-pager listing all the competencies and the components of each? Each competency lists 4 to 7 bullet points. Highlight the keywords in each bullet point. Ideally your competency example on the application form should be hitting three or four of those keywords. So, as a really quick example, for Management & Delivery of Results, you might have an example along the lines of:

"I noticed there were problems/delays in X area, resulting in a poor experience for customers [customer service]. I thought about what changes to our processes would be necessary to improve our efficiency and came up with several ideas that would streamline the process [look critically... things can be done better]. I also talked to colleagues and proposed a customer feedback form, which resulted in some other [creative solutions] being identified as possibilities. I incorporated some of those and proposed a revised procedure with Y and Z changes for a trial period, with results measured against previous performance [controls and perfromance measures in place]. The outcome was..."

Ok, that's clunky and artificial, but hopefully you get the idea :-) Best of luck!
