He's really doing a number on Selby... can't say I'm upset over that.... wouldn't count Selby out yet though

It’s over. Selby is gone mentally, which doesn’t happen often.

That in off by Selby is the worst shot I’ve ever seen in professional snooker.

He's been based in Darlington for the past 12-18 months so I think those issues are more or less sorted. Travelling back and forth from Tehran was no good. Just needs to be more consistent and follow up these good performances and I've no doubt he'll get there.

I’ve seen worse, but not from Selby. Don’t think I’ve ever seen Selby as mentally deflated.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 21,820 Mod ✭✭✭✭Brian?

Fair enough. I thought he was still travelling.

I need to go to bed, an hour ahead here and it’s becoming a nail biter. 5-3 and it’s anyone’s match.

There’s my problem with Selby. A minute over a routine red. Then finishes awkward.

Seen worse shots than the in off? If I’d played that In the club I’d be embarrassed

Some battle there. And the shocks continue.

That was a mad entertaining couple of frames... well done Vafaei... comes across well in the interview too..

Great match for a 6-2. Fluke to end it but overall well deserved. If Hossein hadn't won that the match he'd have nightmares over that missed red to the middle for years!

Not a chance did Selby mean that 3 cushion escape.

Stoked for Hossein cos he's a lovely fella as well as a proper talent. But he's got to go follow that up now against Xaio Guodong and start thinking about a big run. After beating Ronnie he went and lost to Andrew Higginson next round, that's no good.

The Sheriff compiling a good break here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Sheriff has lost 4 matches this season and all but one of those has been to either Judd or Ronnie. He's on an amazingly good run and could be set to continue tonight.

Hamilton striking the ball with a lot of confidence. Look how far his bridge hand is from the cue ball, must be one of the furthest away on tour.

How Anthony has only ever won one ranking title in his career, I'll never know. Bonkers really.

Higgins and Zhao game looks good early on.

Plus as an aside Shaun Murphy should get knocked out earlier more often. He is one of the better commentators IMO.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

BBC now moved its studio into the area where the other 4 tables were based which is now the practice set up. As a pro I'd hate to have had to play matches there, looks a bit amateurish for a supposed major tournament.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,504 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

Always make me think of how some of the old UK format could be reintroduced when BBC moves out of the players lounge after 2 days and into the 'leisure centre' part of the complex where the other 4 tables are set up.

If the other place was used today, the whole of the last 32 could be played in one day, saving a day that could be used for a best of 31 frame final. If the tournament started a day earlier, or used the Friday before the BBC coverage starts, then best of 17 semi finals could be played Thursday and Friday on a one table set up.

None of this is going to happen, but it exercises the mind on how the UK Championship could return to it's glory days. All you'd want then is Coral as the sponsor and a green set.

You can get away with it for two rounds as you can ensure most of the top ranked get to play in the arena and the lower guys are banished to the sports hall. But for last 32 you're likely going to put top 16 guys there and they won't be too happy about it and I wouldn't blame them tbh. Tables likely to play very differently for a start.

Higgins was 70 plus down. Higgins needed three snookers. Higgins out match played Zhao tied fella up got the snookers foul on black - foul on pink and a free ball.

The way Higgins plays he can play in his 80's as long as he can walk around the table. Really solid stuff - each frame has to be earned.

Higgins now 3-1 up - and not doing anything flashy.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Well, Ray Reardon had a 94 break only last week and he's 89 so never say never!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,504 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

Good to hear Ray still active

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Really was a superb red from Osullivan there. That was threatening to quietly, almost stealthily become a match. Expect too much of a hill for long to climb now.

Come on Zhao.. Done fantastic to get back in match from 5-3 down.. Has a right good chance here in decider,,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,024 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Great win for the young fella. I had him written off at 5-3.

It wasn't looking good to be sure, but he kept his head well.. That safety exchange at the start of the last frame especially good - forcing the issue.. Fair play to him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Good point from Dave Hendon, looked a bit more measured and composed around the table than he sometimes can be. Average shot time over 23 seconds would suggest so. Not sure if he's the "real deal" or not but that was a great victory for sure.

That bottom quarter had Selby as well so is really opened up.

Highest ranked players remaining there are JackL (15) and Dott (18) who play each other.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,158 ✭✭✭Sandor Clegane

Delighted for Xhao, that was a great finish and comeback.

Delighted for Vafaei too, totally blitzed Selby, not very often you see a Selby drop the shoulders and get deflated.

Nice to see some of the younger crop doing there stuff.

A nature programme on 'Red Button' .... could be showing the last frame decider between Hicks and DD

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Fair size of a lad for just 18 Wu Yize. Angles McManus been talking him up for quite a while, should be 2-0 up on Kyren Wilson here. Interesting contest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Definitely a match on our hands here. A mid range yellow with his "wrong" hand to canon the two tied up reds. This kids got something alright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Wu a bit unlucky to canon in the brown but he'd had 3 really decent chances prior to that and scored a total of 21. Could have won all 4 frames there, doubt Kyren will be so obliging after the interval.

😁 Foolish by Wilson there... awkward cueing, and he tries to unnecessarily force a red to middle... Mon Wu!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Wu has had enough chances to be nearing finishing line here. Obviously got a ton of ability but can't have that cue ball running loose like he does. Work in progress.

Getting too straight on the pink eventually did for Wu in that last frame.. he couldn't buy a decent positional shot after that, and eventually missed the relatively tricky brown.. all's not lost tho, he has a good lead here in frame 7,,, true about his cueball alright,, that last safety of his is testament to that - when he left the white well south of the baulkline... Wilson didn't make a lot of hay from it in fairness..

Calm down ref, a bit of glass. Ah yes, Scullion wearing the correct glass handling gloves. Disaster averted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,102 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

‘Broken glass stopped play’. Wu looking like he wanted to jump in a pocket himself....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Bingham from 0-5 into a decider. Poor Noppon head must be in bits out there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,024 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

It gave Dennis a great line anyway - 'best break of the night'.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Spoke too soon. Noppon with chance to win it now, just one awkward red.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,263 ✭✭✭waynescales1

Yize will be feeling woozy after all these Wilson flukes.

Another decider - this time with Noppon and Bingham.. Think Stuart was 5-0 down at one stage.. And another wildlife programme on Red Button ☹️

Was a good comment by Dennis alright - "Best break of the night" .. The crowd laughed - thought they were listening to Den, but it could have been Wilson taking a red out and plopping it over the pocket 😋 Will credit the laugh to Wilson's shenanigans, as opposed to Dennis' (pretty funny tbf) wisecrack 😎

Looks like Noppon's almost over the line, going by the scoreboard,,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Well done Noppon. Won't be many more relieved men in Yorkshire tonight. Bingham stuck him up there, even obligingly bust the pack open for him. Did it well in the end.

Ref was dead right in fairness.. He might have done himself a mischief, Wu, out of fumbling embarrassment - can easily happen in those sort of circumstances; not least an 18yr old on live TV.. Have to give Marcel props there.
