    Thiago with an absolute screamer

Peach of a strike from Thiago. Brilliant technique.

PSG players have no shame, the way they cheat and over react when tackled.

Sterling equalises. Lovely ball by Rodri in the build.

Mo the main man yet again. Liverpool go up a gear and leave Porto down and out.

2-1 City. Jesus turns it around. PSG struggling down their left side.

Can sent off for Dortmund. Looking bleak for them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,600 ✭✭✭BanditLuke

PSG a shambles. If Poch can't get a tune out of this lot then good luck making Fred and McTominay look like winners. Very over rated manager who's won zip.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,919 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Poch could be a free agent sooner than later.

I wonder would he really want to move from one circus with the PSG owners to another with the Man U owners.

Neymar has to be the most overrated player around, there’s nothing to like about him or the way he plays.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,161 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Gabriel Jesus is absolutely stealing a living at Man City.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,246 ✭✭✭Esse85

De Bruyne, Grealish and Foden all still to come back into this side.

    PSG playing like individuals.

Any manager who inherits Messi/Ronaldo now really has a tough job ahead of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,634 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Think that they are not out, all will rest in a home game with Atleti as it stands AFAIK.

They offered SFA tonight though, really poor, Liverpool in 2nd gear and are lording it all over the pitch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,843 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

PSG are awful for the amount of talent they have

Messi like Ronaldo now makes your team worse off

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,600 ✭✭✭BanditLuke

Liverpool making a mockery of the "group of death"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,258 ✭✭✭✭y0ssar1an22

you gotta respect city's ability for shithousery, and all good teams in fairness.

if you can get away with cynical fouls, do it.

PSG obviously included in the above, their forward line is just a bit lazier and and a bit more primadonna-esque

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,528 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

Just saw the Milan goal, my god their version of the puma jersey is awful, worse then man city. Like a penneys knockoff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,123 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

In the 88min Milan finally do something with the all the ball they had. A cross from Keisse and a header from Junior Messias (a squad player on loan from Crotone with only 2caps for Milan) give Milan a 1-0 win and leaves Porto on 5 with Milan and Atleti on 4 in the group of death

    Sporting through, Dortmund out.

What are the ramifications for Dortmund financially in being knocked out early? Are they more likely to sell the likes of Haaland and Bellingham as a result?

Milan's win in Madrid keeps them alive, Porto in the box seat for second in the group of death, in spite of an insipid performance in Liverpool, losing 2-0 to a Liverpool ambling along in 2nd gear.

It really cant be that bad for them, I doubt they are budgeting for much more then last 16 if even that, just a point of Bayern in Germany and comfortably 2nd, id say its just business as usual

Has any team won the CL 'proper' after winning all of their group games & knockout games?

Bayern did do it in 2019/2020 but the latter stages were reduced to one leg & neutral stadiums.

It's possible for Liverpool, Ajax & Bayern to do it this season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,843 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

    And what?

He still makes the team worse,

Only 4 Prem goals & two on his debut and doesnt run, He make them a worse team

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

He makes the team worse by scoring goals and helping them advance to the next stage of the Champions League? That's a novel take. In the Premier League, he has played 9 games so far under United's worst coach of modern times and has 4 goals and 2 assists, in a run of fixtures that featured 5 of the last season's top 7 sides (make that 6 wiith Chelsea to come at the weekend). Let's see how the rest of his season fares. Not every team requires players to run around like headless chickens.

Think of what his teams could have accomplished without him holding them back with all those goals...

What exactly did Juve achieve that they didnt achieve before he went there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

The framing of that question is designed to minimize the crucial contribution that his goals made to holding off an excellent Inter side under Conte.

Better question would be how is Juve's season looking this campaign without him?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,329 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Perhaps Juve do miss Ronaldo. Serie A is a weak league and Ronaldo was a king there. Plundering goals in the penalty box. He wasnt bought for that purpose. He was bought to deliver a CL to Juve. He didnt come close to achieving this as Lyon and Porto sent Juve packing in The early knockouts.

serie A and juve was a good level for Ronaldo and he should have stayed there.

the top 4 of the Premier league is too big an ask for him at this stage. He’ll exploit weak centre backs to snatch goals in the box but overall a proper club would never have touched Ronaldo. He wasnt needed.

A proper club would have told Cavani to come back for preseason on time and ignored Ronaldo baiting for a transfer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,843 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

    Footballs not that simple

For instance im a Liverpool fan Jota scores more goals than Firmino but Liverpool are a better team with Firmino playing over Jota

Yes Ronadlo gets a goal but how many attacks s break down how many times do teams play out because he cant close

Bruno Fernandes hasnt had a shot on target since October, the balls not getting held up or won back high enough for him to have the same. Impact as he did pre Ronaldo

Ronaldo scores goals he always willl but he causes your team a structural problem at his age now, Especially since United cant afford to be a man down

He had the least, sprints of any Forward in the Prem this season, He certainly comes with, issues

Look at the games against Liverpool & City, United got murdered because they plaued with a man short due to is work rate

No coincidence Bruno didnt start the other night, Carrick knew having both in the side gives u massive problems off the ball

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

If he was bought by Juve to win a CL, then perhaps they ought to have invested better in the other bits of the squad. He did his job in the Champions League and scored goals.

If Serie A is a weak league, and the PL is a strong league, funny how Ronaldo won Player of the Month in his first month back?

Presumably 'proper clubs', whatever they are, aspire to be in the CL knockout stages, and thanks to Ronaldo, United are. Seems like it's working out well.

Not every team has to play football with pressing. When Ronaldo was playing for Madrid against the Barca teams in his La Liga days, it wasn't Madrid that were doing that style. Yet how many Madrid fans were saying Ronaldo was holding the team back because of that? It's a daft argument, mate. You're bascially saying, 'yeah he scores goals, but what about his lack of sprints?' You're rehashing a long since discredited Dunphy argument from around 2005. Scoring goals is the most valuable thing in football. Ronaldo might not offer what Jota does in terms of workrate, but he offers far more in terms of a goal threat as any Portugal fan will tell you. The Euros weren't that long ago and we all saw it. The job of a top coach is to accentuate the positives and minimize the negatives.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,123 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Also Ronaldo has to take the free kicks despite being useless at them. Commentators get all excited like it's a penalty as we wait through his convoluted rugby out half routine only to see the ball slammed at the wall

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,843 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

Correct but United are no Madrid or Barcelona, they cant afford to have the luxury,

Only time will tell the truth and Ronaldo's home coming will end in failure for all in my opinion,

Again its not knocking Ronaldo he is what he is a goal scoring machine A case o fright player but wrong club at this stage of his career to have joined

Ps its nothing like Dunphy arguments im talking about a 37 year old Ronaldo

Proper clubs do not buy a player you have loads of excellent cover already for just to stop him possibly joining the local rivals.

yes Ronaldo’s purchase is going wonderfully for man utd. They just sacked the manager they awarded a contract to in the summer and are 12 points off top in the league after 12 games. Champagne corks should be popping.

Fairly unjustifiable picks (in a sporting sense) by RTE/TV3 there selecting the Pool and MUFC games - can't even claim its chasing 3 points to win the group as first place is already guaranteed.

Porto v Atleti is the clear (and indeed only) standout tie on the Tuesday, but there's multiple groups to be decided in Wednesdays games including straight shootouts between Atalanta v Villareal, Salzburg v Sevilla, and Barca needing something from their trip to Munich.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,933 ✭✭✭kksaints

The Tuesday choice is somewhat justifiable if Milan win and the other match is a draw but the Wednesday decision doesn't except for TV ratings. Young Boys can't qualify for the last 16 and there's other matches as mentioned with far more on the line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,123 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Milan vs Liverpool with a lot on the line for Milan is very different to United vs Young Boys with little at stake.

I'de have Bayern vs Barca over United but Wednesday isn't exactly full of games I would be jumping out of my seat to watch either

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,516 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

Yeah, I'd definitely overlooked that Milan are still alive, though the other game in that group is more likely to be alive all the way through the 90 minutes.

Fundamentally I understand the commercial realities that Pool/MUFC v FC Tirana is a bigger ratings draw than a Real v Juventus type fixture, so its fair that they pick the English teams in the first few weeks.

Would be nice if they actually picked the best/most relevant fixture in Week 6 though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,123 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

The rare Real vs PSG over United vs Quarabag would be nice but unlikely sadly.

On top of ratings you have the problem of pundits being clueless to anything not PL

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,843 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

Surely they just pick there games on which one will get them the most views ? Why would they do it any other way

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,085 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Liverpool weren't on Irish TV in GW5. Because they had already qualified. Man City - PSG was shown jnstead. So they do actually chose the bigger games, when a team is already qualified sometimes.

They wouldn't do it 2 GWs in a row though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,123 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

The bigger game as long as it has a PL team. They would not have done it if it was PSG vs Bayern.

Don't forget City have a lot of fans in Ireland these days 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,969 ✭✭✭billyhead

Maybe VM were contracted to show the Man Utd match before qualification was guaranteed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,557 ✭✭✭✭CSF

Man City v PSG probably would have done more numbers than the Liverpool game. Not many CL games fit that bill.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,085 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

And to be fair, I have to issues with TV providers showing what should be the better game, over a traditional well watched team, when qualification is already secured.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Mbappe scores after 70 seconds against Brugge with a great finish.

...and he gets a second after 6 minutes. Lovely assist pass by Di Maria.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,161 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

That's absolutely brilliant from Mbappe there.

No crowd in the Leipzig - Man City game. It's really off putting, hopefully we don't see European football go back to that crap.
