A taxi scraped my car. I got a picture of his licence plate. Cant make out taxi company. What to do?

Taxi rightfully drove up the bus lane and wanted to get into the lane you were in.

You suddenly became the billergerent motorist that was not going to allow any vehicle get in ahead of you.

Gardai will have no interest as you are as much to blame for your utter stupidity.

You have the number plate with full registration, that is all you need to make a complaint to AGS.

1. The OP is always in the wrong.

You cannot reasonably obliged to let every person in front of you just because they want to get ahead. It leads to confusion and unpredictable driving on both sides, and then accidents.

Say you brake to let someone turn right across your path, you could get rear ended, or the turning feels pressured and is focused on you and misses a cyclist on your left. Always take your right of way. It's not asshole behaviour, it's predictable and proper behaviour.

You'll only get rear-ended if the driver behind isn't paying attention and keeping a safe distance, or if you hit the brakes abruptly. If you read the road ahead (and it's surprising how many people don't look beyond the end of their own bonnet), you'll see a car trying to turn right or change lanes and you'll know that there's a chance that the driver in front might be a decent human being and will let them out, so you preempt it by backing off a little and covering your brake. Which, in turn, will signal your intentions to the driver behind you. Simple. And the fact that you've backed off means that, if the driver in front didn't let them out, you're now in a position to. And if you spot a potential hazard in your mirrors, like a cyclist coming down your inside, a tailgater or a person shaving, applying their makeup or on the phone behind you, or traffic coming the opposite way or whatever, then obviously think about whether it's safe to let them out. Simple.

A good driver tries to help other road users whenever it's safe to do so. A bad driver sees a taxi or a bus trying to change lanes and deliberately closes the gap like it's some kind of mini-victory in their sad little life.

I agree with all of that, but it applies to the taxi driver too - why were they so insistent to get past? So much so that they entered the OP's lane and hit their car.

Driving or cycling in Dublin city almost every day, Taxi drivers love to speed up an empty bus lane, and at the first ones to barge into traffic without a care when they come up behind a stopped bus. I'm not about to get rear ended slamming on the brakes to accomodate an impatient taxi driver. Only so much reading of the road when the other driver is completely unpredictable.

I actually don't think taxis should be allowed to use bus lanes, full-stop. But it is what it is. If a taxi passes me in the bus lane and I can see a bus stopped ahead, it makes sense to open a gap for it. The same applies to all situations where traffic is likely to merge. If you read the road ahead effectively, there's almost never a reason to slam on the brakes. Traffic moves a lot more freely (and safely) when everyone leaves a gap for others to merge into.

Spot the taxi driver

Taxis are allowed to use the Bus Lane because they are SPSVs.

If they need to turn right to complete their journey they must get into the right lane.

If they don't gain access to the right lane they will end up blocking other SPSVs, buses etc.

This is a fact which should be acknowledged by anyone who drives in the city especially at rush hour.

They are public transport.

Well the driving instructors tell you that alright.

But you run across one OAP on a runaway mobility scooter during the test and the tester starts screaming at you and then has the cheek to fail you. It was a waste of time trying to explain it to her. It must have been her time of the month or something. Anyway, passed it the next time.
