A lot of radar artefacts on ME map. It has started raining here though.

Worryingly, I’m hearing that from people saying their employers in Cork are expecting them to turn up in the morning …

Seems red zone doesn’t mean much to some people.

Also it’s begun to rain with a rather unusual disturbance in the air in Cork City at the moment. I wouldn’t go as far as to call it blustery but it’s “odd”

"biblical rain" should be another one for the bingo card

I’m not sure how accurate this is, but my iPhone is showing the air pressure having dropped from 999hPA an hour ago to 994.32 and falling.

I’m in a hilly area, so significantly above sea level (Cork City)

Seems red zone doesn’t mean much to some people.

that's the thing with so many warnings, not to sidetrack the thread again but it could be a case of the 'boy who cried wolf' syndrome, becoming desensitised to frequent orange / red / yellow warnings, they're all the same surely...

could also be a case of being in north Cork, pretty far inland, should maybe be an orange or yellow warning level area, but gets lumped in with the whole southwest coastal area

In this case, they’re in a city centre job and commuting from coast. No way they’re going in in the morning. It’s far from an essential service and absolutely everything is taking a day off here tomorrow (today).

Is the area I circled in yellow the centre of the developing storm?

Still dropping fast and steadily 993.56 hPa (at an estimated 120m)

edit : 992.7 (in ten mins)

Looks like its having a meltdown. Seems to usually do it when there is a storm.

What are the odds that Shannon radar goes down again, LOL!

Heavy rain in North cork now

And so it begins, just heard my first blustery gust - increasingly heavy rain Cork City

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,182 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

That front is shifting at an unbelievable pace. Despite the rain being expected to be heavy, I think the speed of it passing through will lessen the impact somewhat.

Not so the wind damage and tidal flooding unfortunately.

Rain just starting in Waterford city now. Breeze just now starting to get a little stronger.

I think you have that accurately shown, the low is around 51.5N 16W heading towards the Aran Islands. By the looks of the pressure readings at the M6 buoy the central pressure is already below 970 mbs, as it shows 979 mb there 100 miles north northeast of the centre and winds are increasing there (now NE 69 km/hr gusting to 87). M3 also seeing a rapid increase in south winds now at 61 G 89.

Usually the infra-red will start to show a dark circle where the low centre is located. You can see the first signs of this within a larger area of low reflectivity. This particular storm is not bringing very much warm air north but a squall line feature could develop rather quickly late tonight. That would move through the south over the course of about 2-3 hours if it develops.

Wind and rain starting to pick up in Ballybunion now

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,516 Mod ✭✭✭✭igCorcaigh

Oh, squall lines are definitely interesting. They can bring sudden but short lived wind events along the line.

Tip: If you have any old laptops, also a very handy power bank for charging phones etc

Just while we await this developing storm, and speaking of squall lines, I just want to post this Derecho event video, apologies if it's OT, but one of my fav storm porn vids.

2 power banks and 2 laptops charged and ready to go

Wow my crude iPhone barometric readings are now at 990hPa. I’m not calibrated to sea level and not all that familiar with it, but that seems like a fairly steep rate of decline from 994.32 an hour ago.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,541 ✭✭✭Dazler97

Good man well a head, if your cold and you have no power a hack I seen was lighting candles (maybe 4 or 6 depending on the size pot) over an upside pot that will get heat to build and act as a heater, frosty here in carrick on Shannon so icy ❄️

Hate to add to the bingo game but hows it looking for East Galway?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,333 ✭✭✭Heckler

Rain and very blustery now in Cork city.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,559 ✭✭✭refusetolose

sirens in Cork City northside already

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,511 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

East Galway has a challenging forecast as the low will move in over that area mid-afternoon, so would say winds severe at times late morning, perhaps to about 2 p.m., then less severe for a while, picking back up to severe gusts but more northwest in direction by evening. Two stormy intervals separated by a bit of a break. Rain may total about 30-40 mm. Some mixing by midnight to 0300h overnight (in 24h). Very slow to improve on Wednesday. Sleet likely with slushy accumulations of 1-3 cm.
