It certainly does. I had my two vaccinations back in May and June. I cant imagine the shape I’d be in now if I hadn’t got them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,003 ✭✭✭SillyMangoX

Cream back in the vets again overnight :( he was vomiting non stop this morning so couldn’t give him insulin. He was due in for a check with the nurse today anyway so I rang them and asked could we see a vet too. He was very dehydrated so they wanted to keep him on a drip for 24hrs and keep an eye on his sugars. Fingers crossed we’ll know more tomorrow.

Cherry Blossom I hope you are feeling better!

Poor little Milo was down in the vets today, has a bit of a cough. Vet said there is a vaccine resistant strain going around and he must have picked it up at daycare. They are seeing lots of vaccinated dogs with it at the moment, luckily its not too serious.

Have to keep him out of public places for a few days so no walks - time to get creative with some indoor enrichment as his energy levels seem to be back to normal after a quiet day yesterday!

Hope you get some good news tomorrow! Its awful seeing them sick!

I'm minding my parents Staffordshire bull terrier puppy at the minute, she is a hand full. Biting me on my hands, feet and arms. I have cuts and everything. She has ruined two pairs of knock off crocs by attacking them while I am wearing them. That's how I have cuts on my feet. I have to bring her for a walk everyday and have developed blisters, one on my heel and another on my toe. Not use to walking as I do not do it normally as I drive every where and walk a small distance like into a shop or shopping centre. We were caught in a storm Saturday which she didn't like she hid in long grass while I blocked as much of the cold rain off her with my body. She's not too bad though all said apart from when she goes mental biting but it's not constant she sleeps a lot too. She just goes hyper when she has loads of energy.

It sounds horrendous. Hoping it eases off soon. Take care~ and at least you have time to recover by Christmas

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,634 ✭✭✭✭Graces7

Well, I am getting a purebred Siamese! I bred Siamese for many years before I came to Ireland 20 years ago. When I saw the stray cat situation here I changed to rescuing. ALways longed for a Siamese. Selkie is clearly part Oriental which is lovely. .. A rescue we have worked with has had a Siamese handed in. Owners ae going abroad and cannot take her and know these guys will find her a good home. She is eight; not sure yet what colour point; waiting for a photo. She will be spayed etc. After Christmas...

Thanks Graces7, thankfully I am fully recovered now. I still get the odd moment when something doesn’t taste quite right and I have to spray an awful lot of perfume before I smell it 😂. I’ve been in the gym this past three weeks and am going to start walking at lunch time at work. I’ve not been getting enough exercise since my little Sheltie passed away in June. I still have no pets currently. I’m thinking about getting a pair of cats or kittens but I’m in two minds about it. Good luck with the new addition when he/she arrives Graces.

A home needs a critter or two..And when my family ordered me to find three after losing Scallywag and Beata in the same weekend? It was not replacing them but honouring their memory. I was offered the Siamese in the same spirit after .... too painful still.

Recovery seems to take forever from covid. The daughter of a friend has long covid and still only working part time You are doing fine!

I think Siamese Lady is going to be a good newcomer! I was given an "island car" ie no nct needed months back but no-one to bring it over... Sitting wrapped in film on someone;s drive,.. the man who will bring Lady uses a lorry and has offered to bring the car... red Smart car! My mobility has largely got up and went so what a blessing that will be., NB folk are terrified of getting stranded on the island! I was always terrified of getting stranded OFF the island... Something to look forward to; car plus Siamese cat.

Are everyone else's cats sleeping all day?

@cherryblossom so very sorry to have missed it if you posted loosing your wee Sheltie, I’ve not been active in boards too much lately since the facelift! Yes to more furries like @Graces7 , I can’t settle in home mode until I’ve a pet.

@Graces7 who hoo to getting back to driving, I finally did a few weeks ago & although I don’t go anywhere important as such, being able to get up to Wicklow at the weekend & to one of bigger city parks has done wonders for me, Esmae & Mr C. The change in their relationship had been amazing too, they are much better friends now that they get some great walks in w/o the nuisance of other dogs & mounds of people around. Enjoy the new motor!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,634 ✭✭✭✭Graces7

Thanks... Of course I will not be going off island.. But I will be able to get to the shore. Paddle in the briny!

And absolutely a home NEEDS a furry or more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,634 ✭✭✭✭Graces7

Non cat person describes my (!!!) Siamese as black and white, so seal point,,,, YAY!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,634 ✭✭✭✭Graces7

Well. as the weather out here is getting frisky already I have fed all five cats to full capacity. Raw chicken and tinned food... The two island cats are usually fed outside as I slowly get my usual residents used to them. Inevitably as Dominic is entire male.. And the very damaged Tonto is an unknown quantity inside. NB they have splendid shelter across the yard.

Tonto is now at the end of my bed as to the manner born, but watching me closely. Ah he is starting to treadle now!

Cats are all stuffed and blissfully quiet!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,634 ✭✭✭✭Graces7

Tonto is on my bed, washing his paws after a big feed ... My other four cats are as close to the solid fuel stove in the kitchen as they can safely get..

This will be the first night all five have been in all night. With Barra due to hit us head on there is no way else...

    Feline history in the making...

Hoping all are safe and snug out there..

I am annoyed. I think because I'm wrong, but I just don't like being confronted about it. We have a boxer/lab/german shepherd cross. She is 18 months and we live in an apartment. She is a barker, and very defensive in apartment complex. She barks and runs at people in the development because she doesn't really understand that her home is just the apartment bit, and not the whole complex. At night time, she is especially bad. She is not friendly to people she doesn't know. Not unfriendly, just doesn't really have much of an interest in it.

Tonight we were going for a toilet and when we were coming back, there was a man walking against us. She tries to run at him. If she was off the lead, she would bark at him and run back. But being on the lead, she pulls and looks like she would attack if free. I have her on a reasonably tight lead. I give the guy a eye roll, and he responds with 'control your dog bro'. I say what, he repeats himself. I say is she not under control. He goes yeah, but i'm just saying it's not cool for her to bark at people. I go ok, she didn't bark at you. Then she barked at him. He repeats himself again. And then says 'i could call the management company' and walks away.

I'm annoyed by the fact that he's right she shouldn't bark at people, and 'it's not cool', but it's just an active largeish young dog in apartment living and while we try to avoid people as much as we can in the complex, night time is her trigger and she goes into protective mode. What is he going to phone the management company about? A dog barked at me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

There are a lot of signs there and you definitely do not want her off the lead. I had a dog that would bite someone but I lived in a house in the countryside which was fenced in so it was fine as he never got the chance to bite someone apart from family members visiting or such, so I used to have to lock him up when we had visitors. Regarding the barking does she do that in the apartment? That can be very annoying for you neighbours. You also should have done research and got a small dog if you live in an apartment. That dog you own would need a lot of exercise. The barking could be from too much energy. That dog would also need to go for a run rather than walking slowly. So put her on a strong lead and jog around a park or such with her she will really enjoy that. You were also a bit cheeky to the guy when he was telling you to be in control of your dog. It's a largish dog and people would be frightened of her and especially if they felt you weren't in proper control of her.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 932 ✭✭✭Yillan

Thanks for your reply. A lot of your assumptions are incorrect. She doesn't bark in the apartment. She gets one big walk off the lead and then sleeps the rest of the day. Has never bitten or threatened to bite anyone.

To be fair the picture you paint of your dog is all we have to make assumptions from. The man was obviously afraid of your dog.. they don’t know her like you do so it’s fair for people to be wary.. this us very much YOUR problem. There’s a difference to somebody being afraid of a dogs for no reason…i.e. it’s their problem and not something your dog has done apart from simply existing - I get this with my two simply because of their size.. To a dog who appears very much unpredictable to others and is as you say above barking and lunging at people.

I definitely think it's my problem as I said in my post. I'm annoyed because I'm in the wrong and he is right, as I said in my post. If it seems like I'm trying to defend my dog's behaviour because I think it's acceptable, I'm not. I'm just saying that I have a dog who unfortunately barks and lunges at people when she is on the lead. She has never bitten person or dog, but has been attacked and bitten twice by other dogs who were off the lead.

It's just very frustrating because we have gone to training classes with her, and done our best to keep her calm around people, and she is a very good dog when she is off the lead - perfect recall, perfect sit and stay. It's just when we are on the lead and in the apartment block she really gets nervous and appears scary to neighbours. I think we need to move somewhere else, but that is easier said than done. It's just difficult because there can be people outside the lift every time it opens, and even when there isn't, people can appear from around any corner in the development, and especially at night, she gets a fright. It's so frustrating. And with the added emphasis on trying to keep her calm since the man confronted us, I feel like she gets the sense that things are even more tense which drives her anxiety even more.

    :(

Sending you love, Yillan. I know you're probably feeling anxious too in these situations, because you're on guard for a person to suddenly appear, which your dog will feel as well. How old is your dog? I haven't seen you mention it.

What you're going through sadly isn't uncommon, we tend to expect all our dogs to be happy, social little yokes, unfazed by everything, especially when we put the work in to try and make it so. Sadly, it's not like that. Sometimes we can put so much work into our dogs being especially good at a certain thing (meeting other dogs, for example) that we accidentally give our dog the belief they are going to meet every single dog they meet, and they're not gonna want to meet every dog. Sometimes genetics are a factor, and our dog doesn't like anyone but their family circle, tight spaces like hallways can be unsettling for a dog who doesn't want a stranger in their personal space.

There's things you can buy, such as little leash-sleeves that say "In Training: please ignore me" etc, I know it probably won't help much, but sometimes things like this can give you a bit of space + a person forewarning to not engage with your dog.

Ah sorry - I took you up wrong Yillan. It’s terrible when you have set backs like this and it’s out of your control 😔 My Lucy was terrified of kids - she’d bolt or try to hide. The amount of times we had to get up and leave when we were having coffee etc after calmly explaining to parents that she was terrified… yet they’d let kids approach again and again. I ended up with a harness that said in training and that helped a lot. In your case maybe a harness/lead/vest that says nervous dog? Or could you maybe leave a note up from her/or Xmas cards even explaining that she’s afraid of people and apologising if she frightens anyone? I have a buggy for Bailey for longer walks and it was the first thing I thought of - I’d wheel her out with the buggy covered.

Do you get on well with any of your neighbours so that they would do some work with you both around the apartment block?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 932 ✭✭✭Yillan

    @muddypaws @VonVix

Thanks everyone for the comments. It really made such a difference to have gotten a bit of a sympathetic ear. I think the christmas card to my neighbours on the bulletin board is such a nice and clever idea. She is so photogenic as well, which would obviously be in her favour. The vest/leash sleeve is a good idea too. She is 18 months old. She has always been a nervous dog from when we got her as a puppy - it is sort of embarrassing that we can't even claim that she was a mistreated rescue. We made her like this.

We have made some progress this week and we had three potential barky interactions on the most recent outing today that she avoided. One she didn't avoid - a man on a gangway across from ours and two floors down came around a corner and she took exception. From 20 metres away.

When I see a person now coming towards us in the complex, I divert towards the nearest person-free area and give her lots of treats for not barking at the person, even though she really stares very hard at them. The unfortunate thing is that there isn't always a person-free area nearby, or the person comes around a corner quickly before I get a chance to divert course. But we're working on it, and I think she's getting better.

We have neighbours who we get on with who might be willing to help us train in scenarios. I'll have a chat with them in the new year

Lovely weather for plenty of walks in the Phoenix Park with a lovely Springer X. Only thing is I have blisters on my feet and the two heels are skinned of me. I wouldn't mind but I was wearing Skechers. The pain....

God I prefer the cooler weather when there’s less people about and no worries about the dogs getting too hot!

It's beautiful early in the morning. It's not too hot yet for it to be uncomfortable in the daytime either. It is only March.

Amazing weather the last week, especially as it’s only march. Managed to clear our site in Dun Laoghaire, old workshop & office, planted out about 30sqm of native wildflowers as it’ll be a while before we find out if An Board Plenala will rule in our favour against the council and made a wee area safe for the doggies, built a fenced area with a tiny bris soleil for Esmae as she’s not fond of the direct sun or heat. We had some fabulous walks in Phoenix Park too, found a few boggy lakes that Esmae loves to get in with her ball. It’s a pity we’ll be changing back to normal temps this week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,458 ✭✭✭apache

I veered off my usual route in the park. Kirby dived down a gully and splashed about in dirty water. When she emerged she was covered nose to tail in muck. I wasn't impressed...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,291 ✭✭✭em_cat

Our Pom Esmae does that too, great thing is that her coat cleans so effortlessly. Also the pure joy on her little face is worth it 😁

are people staying away from dogs/cats if they have covid ? or is there any need

I haven't heard of any animals getting it. Do you have it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,458 ✭✭✭apache

That's true. The pure joy on her face was worth it.

Today the 04 April was my late dogs Birthday. He would have been 18. I was lucky he lived to 17 years, three months and one day. I still miss him.

I just won dog treats in a competition. I don't know if it's one bag or a lot more. But I'm chuffed anyway.

A dog I frequently look after is in dire need of a wash and haircut. The whole works. I don't want to fall out with the owner who is a family friend. But I had to say it to them yesterday. Sternly. I had hinted a few times before but it had fallen on deaf ears. But then again it's not my dog but I know her ears need a good clean because she's always scratching them. Somebody walked past me the other day and stopped and asked was she a labradoodle...lol she dosen't look like that when she's clipped.....but I can see the resemblance now when it's overgrown.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,458 ✭✭✭apache

I was genuinely worried about the dog. Pleased to report she got washed and clipped and looks absolutely gorgeous. A completely different dog!

Nearly lost the dog at the beach this afternoon. She was gone for nearly an hour. I was so stressed out. Thank God I eventually got her. She usually has good recall.

No what ya mean @apache last time our Yorkie slipped his harness, he spent nearly 2 hours living his best life running the length & breadth of the area of Phoenix Park we were at, he’d eventually knackered himself out but wouldn’t come close enough to catch, that is until my OH showed up & he proceeded to go straight to him and lie down. TBH, Mr C had absolutely no recall, he’s on one of those escape proof harnesses now. I walk him and our Pom together so she was delighted when he flew off 😆 me, I was in taters freakin out that he’d get mauled or tear off after deer or get hit by an OPW truck. I felt awful as it’s totally my responsibility to keep him in control but not that day!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,458 ✭✭✭apache

She was having a fantastic time but I'm afraid to let her off the lead in case it happens again. I am so relieved it ended well. It was her first time at the beach.

I nearly lost a dog years ago. I was in a forest in Mayo and a family of deer walked by and my dogs chased them. The male came back but female didn't. She knew she done wrong so never came back. It was a thick forest so I couldn't see far. I searched and called her but she never came back. I found her eventually at the car park as it was getting dark. What she was doing was following me from a distance as I searched for her. As I said she knew she done wrong so kept away from me. Odd quirks some dogs have.

We got Creams ashes back yesterday in the most beautiful casket shaped like a sleeping cat. We had gotten the same one for Dude years ago and I was worried they’d be identical but the wood is a different colour. It’s really nice. It’s also my first time getting back paw and nose prints so there’s my next tattoo idea sorted. It’s bittersweet having him home again. It still doesn’t feel real, especially because our lives revolved around him so much for the last 7 months with the insulin and epilepsy routines

I've been meaning to get a tattoo of my departed cat's paw print since she passed on. I was torn between getting a generic cat tattoo or the paw print. Decision related inertia set in and I haven't got around to it yet.

    Hi all

I see the weather is heading for high 20's the weekend , is it a good idea too give your dog a cold sponge down in hot weather ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,003 ✭✭✭SillyMangoX

I forgot just how -busy- kittens are all the time. We haven’t even had Miso a full week yet but he’s settled in so well it feels like he’s been here forever. The amazing thing is, he’s 12 weeks old and it’s also 12 weeks since we lost Cream. It really feels like he was sent to us.

  • Registered Users Posts: 603 ✭✭✭zedhead

Our little reactive Milo has come so far in the 2 years we've had him. He's just had his best weekend ever. Saturday we took him for a walk in Bushey park and there were so many dogs and people around because it was a beautiful morning. We were a bit nervous but his reactions lately have been so much less than before so we gave it a go and he was superstar. He didnt react to a single dog. He gave a small growl and bark to one dog that got right in his face while we were buying food at the market but other than that he just ignored all the dogs and even briefly happily greeted a small little cavalier king charles. Then yesterday we went to Marley which again was really busy and again he did not react to a single dog!!

He may regress and not have every walk be as successful but I am really finally beginning to believe there will be a point where he will be over his reactivity completely!
