Can a taxi driver smoke in his or her car?

Since a taxi is a "work place" and essentially a form of public transport, I imagine that they are forbidden from smoking in their vehicles.

When parked up, I observed a taxi with an arm outstretched from the driver side window and puffs of smoke coming out. Minutes later, the butt was thrown out the window.

I have it on dash camera. I am considering reporting the driver to the council or litter warden and whoever deals with breaches of smoking regulations. I have crystal clear footage of the registration plate, the taxi plate number and an image of the driver getting into his vehicle. This was at a drive through car park.

Would you report in the same situation?

You can report all you like,it might make you feel better and I personally don't like the litter aspect of it.

However,you need to realise nothing will happen and you're not in Sweden now

OP, you need to become more acquainted with the films of Mr. Charles Bronson (the actor that is) and learn a few ways to sort out these issues yourself on the spot

Would this happen to be in Dublin? I’ve noticed that taxi drivers from Dublin, particularly, tend to be extremely scruffy and unprofessional. Usually their cars and navy gilets stink of fags and the language out some of them would make a sailor blush. “****” this and “****” that. “Yeh culchie prick” this or “you can bite the back of me bollix” that. It wouldn’t surprise me if they smoke in their cars as well.

Personally I always prefer to get lifts from Nigerian taxi drivers.

It's well established that Dublin is a kip but I wouldn't use the above as an example.

Go anywhere in ireland or indeed most places and you'll get the same,no big deal.

Yeah I don’t know. I have been all over this island and, in my opinion, taxi drivers from Dublin are amongst the worst people to spend time with in the country. Vulgar and proudly ignorant with chips on each shoulder about virtually any topic you dare to approach. We’ve all had to listen to a Dublin taxi driving ranting about Nigerians, or Yoko Ono, or Muslims. Stinking the place out.

I’m not au fait with the ins and outs of taxi driver qualification (bar buying a plate and a full driving licence) but I think that there should be some sort of taxi driver school for drivers to be accredited and trained with customers service skills.

From the curriculum they would learn why driving in a Man United shirt looks unprofessional, not to use racial slurs in front of customers and where fag butts should be thrown (the bin).

Perhaps he was on a break and sitting in his own vehicle?

But great you have it on video, perhaps call into your local Garda station, and your local TDs office, just in case the lazy guards don't investigate your complaint

There's regulations that prohibit smoking in a work place but if the taxi is empty, is it still considered a workplace?

TBH, I never thought I'd say this, but I feel sorry for taxi drivers - they must be stressed to high heaven seeing their business disappearing and we're lucky there's any taxis around at all after the past few years.
