The Tony and Leo new found love fest continues this morning, CMO & Leo are guests on morning Ireland, seperately of course. This following on from the Peculiar appearance of both at last Fridays press conference.

A week previously they wouldn't be seen in the same county, let alone same building.

I doubt anyone is disliked, people just disagree with others opinions. Don't take it to heart, there is a real world out there where you can avoid all things covid, don't let this place and certain posters dictate how you feel mentally and more importantly, if interactions on boards are getting you down, step away and look after yourself both physically and mentally.

Like PTH2009, I pop into this thread on boards to be with like minded individuals (for sake of a better description), and to vent of course.

I agree that there's a world out there where you can avoid all things covid, but in my particular work situation, the radio is playing 9 to 5, Monday to Friday, and as we all know there's no escaping covid on the radio.

There is little reason to do anything now and with this variant it would be a bit crazy. How they've approached it is a different conversation but NPHET are not alone in the world in their overzealous alarm about this. Hopefully this will be fast and mild.

To be fair, he laboured the fact that he was taken out of context with that “peculiar” quote during the conference on Friday.

He said his point was that he thought it was going to appear peculiar to many people to introduce restrictions when hospital numbers etc are down, but there are good reasons behind the decision.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,978 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

Yes I agree that Peculiar comment was perhaps taken out of context but generally I feel its fair to say he's tried on numerous occasions to have it both ways. He's also made some astonishingly predictions, the most recent being "He'd be sceptical of any further restrictions being required before Christmas"

I guess the most concerning thing about his and indeed his FG colleagues approach has been the mixed messaging generally and Leaks , FG are either in government or Not so to speak 😏

Came up with a catchy new covid term ......"follow not just the letter, but the spirit of the guidelines"......

Hate the way he calls them "guidelines" and not what they really are... Restrictions.

My question is WTF was Holohan doing on NT a minute ago (recorded a bit earlier) giving interviews/scaremongering??!

Sinead (covering for Ciara) is worse - obsequiously asking softball questions and letting him try to put people off Christmas with family, not even challenging his shyte once!!

Yes, was listening and was like wtf. Avoid social contact, what type of message is that for children.

Maybe he shouldn't be allowed on before the nine o'clock watershed.

I'm lost, here we have experts advising we may need to lockdown for up to 8 weeks!

Then here we have them saying there are no plans for a lockdown:

    Will this ever end?

Jonathan Healy covering for Pat Kenny this morning and the arrogance of the guy is unbelievable.

Texter (who paid 30c for the privilege incidentally) asks why we're vaccinating for something (Omicron) that presents as a cold - Healy responds asking if the texter is a qualified medic and quoting Holohan from the last hour.

Unbelievable stuff. I know I shouldn't be surprised, but the complete lack of objectivity and challenge from our mainstream media is shocking. No wonder half the country still believes there's a "deadly killer virus" out there.

The "Experts" are not official government experts so to speak so are not constrained by the Agenda.

The official government "Experts" follow the Agenda

It's a perplexing question , when is an expert and actual expert so to speak 😁

I'm reminded of one of historys greatest un answered questions

How did they get the fig, into fig rolls 😏

Quote from Leo on the 9am news noting that first report and saying that no plans has been decided yet (until of course they're rolled in overnight that is!)

As for when it'll end.. only when people stop complying and taking to the streets in Irish Water-style mass protesting... but then as many are quite enjoying the savings/benefits they're seeing from WFH on full pay and are past the point in their lives of doing much socialising anyway, that's not likely to happen for a long time yet.

There is no concept of the bigger picture among many in Ireland. That's why we have a Dail full of parochial pothole and medical card application form fillers.

Leo bullshitting on radio about allowing periods of total freedom.we’re either free absolutely or else we’re slaves of the state.this crap isn’t ending.

as for the pretence of gagging the sainted one.ya right.he’s back out terrorising the frightened again.someone in government is really determined to bury his past errors and hope it’s never brought back up and that people will only remember the “killer” head cold

RSVP, thanks for not coming to the party, open the windows..... The propaganda is relentless!

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,978 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

That was the Idea, un official Gag but it became clear the ineptitude of Government was breathtaking but more importantly the Gag would mean no political cover if things went pear shaped. So they sat down over Tea and mariieta biscuits and came up a let's play nice and we're all buddies approach.

You advise, we'll disagree gently, then we'll compromise, make us all look like we're on the same team and friendly etc, sell the message and hope people don't realise there being treated like absolute gobshytes so to speak.

They have an ability to spin the negative from anything. All stick no carrot is right. Could they not come out and say..."reports from SA & to a certain extent Denmark, show this variant is indicating it doesn't appear to cause as much hospitalizations. If this holds true to our country, we'll start unwinding the restrictions, especially the ones just introduced last week asap...."

    Power of positivity

And the thing is, many people don't realise this and play into it completely. Like the texter to NT a minutes ago complaining about people in Dundrum Town Centre going into shops unmasked and not being challenged by security (oh nooooes!)

Healy of course, being the good boy he is, suggests this is a uniquely Dublin thing and people should get with the programme.

That's enough "independent" radio for me today I think!

The only thing missing from the RTE interviews this morning was Mull wine, Mince pies and the sounds of Christmas crackers being pulled in the background , I wonder was there bottles of the strong stuff handed out to the guests on departure , vomit inducing gentle probing of CMO and Leo 🙄

The problem with NPHET and how they are driving outside of their lane too much is that they are giving very specific "guidelines" to government. It has become normalised that NPHET will give very specific rules to go by such as close pubs at 5pm.

What their role should be would be that NPHET meet, they discuss situation and places where we can reduce transmission. They go to government and say "we have seen a lot transmission in hospitality*, you might want to look at introducing measures in this aspect".

(*Even though there is no data to suggest this)

That's how they should be communicating. Not "close your pubs at 5pm". Their role is to advise, not to instruct.

Government should be giving NPHET a template to work off, something that they cannot deviate from. Highlight all of the key areas of society. Tell them to rank their concern out of 10 for each of them. Then average it out for the 40 or so people involved in NPHET. This prevents Holohan from going on solo runs or dictating to NPHET to implement what he wants.

So they implement a regular report. NPHET give their specific ratings. Caveat notes are given and the specific member of NPHET highlighted for what the say. It also needs to be full viewable to the public. Holohan then goes to meet the government to discuss the report. Then after that he has to sit infront of a public accounts committee to be quized on their findings.

It keeps Holohan in check. It ensures that nobody is running NPHET as their own personal fiefdom. And if government want their opinion on specific things, then they will ask them.

I wouldn't expect anything else from RTE but we have NO mainstream outlet (TV, radio or press) that is willing to actually ask real questions and properly challenge the likes of Holohan and Leo. It's all softball questions and/or letting them talk unchallenged for lengthy periods.

Of course, this was guaranteed with the revenue being made by these stations/outlets through HSE/Government Covid-related advertising (like those disgusting RSVP and "glad you stayed away" ads), plus the fact that many of these "journalists" ultimately aspire to moving up to be a staffer for the same TDs they're "interviewing". The Fourth Estate has been long since bought and paid for in this country.

As I said yesterday, this is the sort of thing we used to criticise tin-pot dictatorships or Communist states for, and yet here we are!

Very sad to hear of your daughters friends. I hope she gets through ok.

Fwiw, Dr Holohan is a public health doctor and AFAIK, they are the doctors that are said not to be great at clinical decisions hence going into public health. He seems very risk averse since having made an enormous blunder at the beginning.

Worth contrasting Paddy mallon, actual hospital doctor, and Holohan.

We've three under 10 and I personally feel that the restrictions are bonkers, eroding community spirit and joy in life. Might be worth writing to your TD s over Christmas.

Just listened back. Take away line - NPHET don’t seem to be taking a Christmas break. Presenter was as bad trying to push for a lockdown.
