Oh that is one ride of a watch. I love that era.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

More like if I had a few too many and I wake up the next day with the watch missing 😂

If I lived or socialised in an area where it was quite likely I could become a victim of a violent robbery because of my watch (like London), I would downgrade to a cheap watch...

Seiko SRPE something or other on Mick's blue strap.

Stowa Ikarus. New to me... But that is me done for a long time now. I think I will try to go all of 2022 without buying a watch!

(Let's see how long that lasts!)

    Casio F91W

There was a columnist in the FT (of all places) today recommending this classic for a frugal 2022 although he picked the coloured case version for an exorbitant £15.

You can get the black version from Argos for €12.

If you use my unaffiliated link and buy this watch I don't get paid anything.

Buy Casio Men's Black Resin Strap Watch at Argos.ie- Your Online Shop for .

    Battery change time.

1980's Yema "Superman". French company Yema like LIP were in dire straits at this stage so Seiko bought into them. Yema like LIP did a lot of quirky fashion and gimmick watches, cos that's a French thing anyway, but they came out with the Superman in 1962 and out of the box it was a 300m dive watch, one of the few at the time(and the only French example) and had a novel way of locking the bezel(that doohicky at 3). The screwdown crown is an internally sleeved job, presumably to avoid copyright issues. On that score the comics superman crowd sued them over the name but lost. They also had the smaller and popular among divers "Skindiver" model. When the first Frenchman went into space, he was wearing a Yema. Ten years ago you could get the Superman models for a few quid, now the quartz are over 500 and the autos over 1000. Very early or unusual examples double that.

Feck! forgot to do the date thing. 😡😁

Ok so here we go again. Speedmaster number 3. Had a wanted add on tz and a seller in France had a full set 2010 for sale. Prices seem to be going a bit nuts on these.

Did it come with a bracelet?

When prices go crazy I look elsewhere.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,732 ✭✭✭micks_address

yep almost full bracelet.. hence im looking for a link :) seller priced the missing link.. i got away a good 1k than the cheapest on adverts... ichrono, dawson etc were higher.. they do seem to be thin on the ground... i know its a flipper.. hopefully ill keep it but at least the values are pretty solid if i do decide to move on

An early 70s quartz, Girard Perregaux 9575KA. Simple three hander with quickset date. The calibre 352 was the first to use a 2^15 Hz crystal which became the standard thereafter. Best I can date this watch from is '73 onwards from the date code on its Motorola IC. The watch seems in good condition for it's age, it's integrated bracelet fits me well, links would be hard to find. It's a chunky watch, maybe 13-14 mm thick.

    Some potatocam shots.

Yay! Another addition to the GP350 fold! 😃 That's one of the less common models to see. Then again these days they're all getting much harder to source. When people buy them they seem to hang on to them. Lucky it fits, as you say links would be a thundering bugger to source if it didn't.

I assume they are hunted down since the hodinkee article on the Tron dialed version. This one came from Romania. I suspect the crystal has been changed as there is some flux from rework that I'll need to clean out. No major dings on the case and the brushing on the bracelet is unscathed. Maybe it's been polished, if so it's a good job, and the case shape helps, no hard edge.

This week I have mostly been wearing....Hard to photo, the facets catch the colours differently, almost looks two tone in this photos.

That was some of it alright NJ, though Hodinkee was a bit behind the curve. Their "quartz week" was more a response to an existing background trend in the early quartz stuff being targeted by vintage collectors, who realised that it was an untapped end of the hobby where rare watches that were once very expensive top of the range models with hardware to match were going for feck all, when you could find them. The GP 350's when new were considered "reasonably priced" for quartz even though they were at least a third more expensive than the Speedies and Subs at the time. The Beta 21 engined jobs were a lot more expensive again. EG a Speedy could be had for around 200 quid, a Beta 21 Omega would be closer to a 1000, a Longines Ultraquartz was around the 600 mark. When first released the Seiko Astron famously cost the price of a family car. Prices remained high for quartz until the mid 70's. US president Gerald Ford's wife vetoed him wearing a first series Pulsar digital that he got as a gift because the cost would send a bad message to the electorate and when the media found out questions were raised. Then the Japanese brought the costs down near overnight and the Swiss(and US and French) watch industry fell over. Mad how things can shift so quickly.

No major dings on the case and the brushing on the bracelet is unscathed. Maybe it's been polished, if so it's a good job, and the case shape helps, no hard edge.

It's been polished alright. They were originally a brushed finish. The case brushing on the GP stuff tends to be very fine so wore easily and a lot were later polished. The bracelets generally last much better as they were usually a bought in item.

Ad from 74. It's easy enough to rebrush them, especially on that case shape. Note how they mention the observatory chronometer testing, a much more stringent set of tests than chronometer certification. That tested the full production watches not just movements, had more varied tests under different conditions and lasted longer.

Staying on topic and on trend. 😁

    French LIP Tallon(prototype) from 74.

    New watch. Same terrible photography.

    Its **** minging.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,012 ✭✭✭njburke

There's one on eBay at the moment in an original box and it has the brushed finish.

Interestingly the seller has not given dimensions on the bracelet. At £700 it would want to fit.

You have mentioned before buying a spare or donor watch for watches you want to keep long term.

There's a bit of a knack/ game of chance to buying vintage watches online. I did well with the dead lip nautic ski , sourcing a working movement and then having it exchanged. I might do more of that.

Theres a book I'm trying to find at the moment.

Finally, to get back on topic. I bought an omega for her indoors from the GP seller. It's a crownless two hander 1365, recessed button, short push index's the minute , long push advances quickly. From '81 I think.
