Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Good article summing up the Jack Ma and Alibaba situation:

"Huxiu [A Chinese newspaper which Alibaba has a stake in], which had also published an editorial warning against excessive punishment of China’s tech groups, was ordered to halt its operations for a month."

"The Communist party reigns supreme and that any private business, no matter how strategically important to the country’s future, will be brought to heel if it is perceived to jeopardise the party".

I wonder if Alibaba started or wanted to start paying dividends would Xi Jinpeng reject it? I don't see how he would like Chinese money leaving the country?

If you own a private Chinese enterprise, do you even own it? Let's face it the state pretty much runs these companies and all they are really interested in is protecting their power and to a lesser extent Chinese citizens.

Leaving aside the fact that the CCP party basically control these companies and can block any acquisitions, tax any dividends (easily) etc. You don't even own any part of the actual underlying Chinese company, rather, a contractual agreement to part of their future profits. This means that as shareholders you've no voting entitlements and no direct ownership in the companies assets. (Now, the average investor not having voting rights isn't a big deal but this would be off-putting for institutional investors, and let's face it, these are the ones that move stocks long term).

It's plausible to suggest that at the CCP could ban VIE's at some point in the future, although not likely, in that scenario it would leave most westerns owning stocks like Baba, JD, Tencent etc. "holding the bags".

I know the argument is that a lot of this is already factored into the current price and that Charlie Munger is an investor etc. but I'd suggest that many on this forum don't actual know what an ADR / VIE structure is, well worth knowing before / if invested in any Chinese companies. The reason that the VIE structure was created in the first place is that under Chinese law, foreign ownership in most Chinese industries is prohibited.

Bottom line is CCP don't / won't give a f**k about western investors. Dyor

Very Good article on the VIE Structure ->

Up nearly 20 fold in 18 months, pretty impressive

Could anyone suggest some stocks I should buy? I'm new to this (I have about $600)

I know the safest idea would be to throw them into ETFs for now, but I don't think revolut has any at the current moment.

None of this is news. Institutional investors knew this years ago. Institutional investors still own tens of billions of the company.

    From 1st January 2020 to October 2020 (it's peak) BABA grew 40%.

I've been reading about the VIE thing for years at this stage. People keep repeating it.

Tencent trades OTC and has performed very well.

I'd agree with Pussyhands, you'll get 2 BRK.B shares, won't make you rich but should make a steady profit over time

Institutional investors would know but I'd say the majority on this forum wouldn't know about the VIE structure (at least in detail) hence the post.

Also could alot of that institutional investments not just be coming from passive investors at this stage? (I.e I presume baba is in a few of the foreign growth indexes).

Alibaba (BABA) ownership with the top fund investors. 15 of them own BABA.

Someone in here mentioned Berkut Minerals, now called Carnaby Resources, a couple of years back. If you're still here I owe you a pint. I bought some and left them in the bottom drawer. It's up 350% these last few weeks. My average is around 18c and they're currently 126c....great end to the year.

    Baba falling back again.

Interested in what you said on spread betting and who do you use. I also have been thinking about stock options for US equities but can't find any platform in Ireland. I also hear some of the US people on Discord happily betting on the SPY and QQQ.

Baba up 9% now. It's up and down like you know what.

Growth seems to have a bit of a pop today.

My DKNG is up 6.2%, LMND is up 10%.

I use IG. It allows 1 to 5 leaverage for normal shares, and 1/50 I think for the indexes. I'll be bluntly honest though serious element of luck involved, and its absolutely not something I'd recommend you waste much time at, its fine to use with some thought out strategies (which I'd hope mine above would of been, during a fed q&a), but obviously element of luck, if the market didn't like something jpow announced it could swing against me fast. Also you absolutely should never ever allow yourself to come close to a margin call, if you do it basically means you haven't set proper targets or stop losses, and you probably let emotions take over and let a trade that went against you run away far too long. The last 6 months I've been using it to swing trade, only a small amount (less than 1%) of my overall account, and in general I'm no better off, I have a run of like 5 or 6wks steadily building up, but then the whole market goes against me and I loose the previous 6wks profit lol. Dec 2020 was very kind to me and by pure luck I cashed out the full amount in Jan 2021.

I've been doing options since about July. I use Firstrade (US based) . It's a big learning curve and I've made plenty of mistakes but finally recovering from them to show a profit.

I recommend setting up a spreadsheet and taking trades on paper for a few months while you learn.

Markus Heitkoetter on YouTube has tonnes of training videos.

Biggest tips. Don't chase premium (that burnt me big time) and only sell puts (if that's what you're doing) on stocks you wouldn't mind owning (another rule I didn't follow at the start). Now that I follow those my results are becoming consistent.

    SQ down 26%

    CHGG down 66%

I think SQ will be a great long term hold, despite the poor year.

Airbus. They are increasing their production rate and announced a series of key customer conquests in the last month. Boeing have no means of responding.

Rotten end to 2021. All 9 of my stocks in the red today. Good riddance to this year tbh. Need BABA to return bigly next year and all will be good again.

    Wonderful year. STE growing.

Got Moderna at $29 in March 2020 and sold Sept last at $429. A gamble based solely on my wanting to see if i could profit from Covid, and sold solely on the basis of "would i buy them at this $429 price?. No".

Was like a Cheshire cat getting my shots of you know who.

Happy New Year chaps, wishing you all a prosperous 2022!!!

ive been following the tread for a few months but never posted but looking to invest wisely this year.

    So far I’ve invested in

    • Viacom
    • Greencoat renewables
    • Brookfield infrastructure

Few questions if anyone has anything to offer.

    • Ocugen & Tilray have seen some drops over the last few months and im thinking now might be the best time to invest? Has Ocugen seen its high and is unlikely to get back to double digits?
    • what do any of you use in terms of software or apps for monitoring, tracking or determining where you in invest?
    • what newspapers, online forums, or websites do you follow to keep up to speed with the world?

    Cheers

    Tom

I see you have invested in a few renewable stocks. Check out $RNW also; it’s less than $8 now and a good long term one. It’s India’s largest utility company which launched on the Nasdaq last year. I expect it to grow a lot over the next 5 years or so. Obviously India is under a lot of pressure to get more into renewables with its large population and Renew Energy will be expected to lead the way in this space.
