Living near a criminal

I live about 2 minutes walk from the residence of a pedophile .

have not put eyes on the man in about 5 years… he’d be in his early to mid 70’s, total recluse…he was convicted of abusing his daughter…in the late ‘90s… did time for it..

the rumour is he only will leave his place after dark.. he has a big black van parked on his drive blocking the view of the front of the property…it’s never moved as long as I’ve been here…

I was visiting my bro-in-law in Seattle when a flyer was dropped in the door from the local police department. The flyer has pictures [front and side profile] age/height/conviction, etc - everything bar the address of a convicted/former sex offender who was relocating to the neighbourhood. Scary thoughts I said to myself, but seemingly the local police have a duty to inform residents!

Every state has a website that details what criminals are living in your area (put in your zip code & it lists them). It's a good idea, can make informed decisions about where to live when choosing a new property.

However, it also drives the irrational fear that is so endemic in American culture.

I'd be the opposite. Certainly in this country, very few murderers are repeat offenders. Most are just a once off. A huge amount of sex offenders are repeat offenders though and, in my opinion, can never be trusted.

BTW, back on topic, 'criminals' are literally everywhere, both convicted and non-convicted. The level of criminality and nature of the crimes differs obviously but by definition anyone convicted of a criminal offence is a criminal. Doesn't always make them a bad person obviously.

Most sex offenders are family members or known to the family. The neighbourhood bogeyman sexual abuser doesn't really happen.

I’d be more concerned with living very near someone with low level convictions like antisocial behaviour for repeatedly cutting the grass at 5 in the morning or burning plastic rubbish in the back garden than the big ticket stuff like murder, rape, genocide, treason, etc.

How would you possibly know how many sex offenders live near you? The vast majority are never apprehended.

Huge number? There really aren't a huge number of sexual assault cases of any kind. It is relatively rare and usual, compared to other forms of assault.

I live a 10 min walk away from a man that raped someone when they were 14 and babysitting for them.

I meet the fat **** every now and again and the only thing stopping me from breaking a knife off in his neck is ive young kids and most importantly its against the wishes of her and her family. I've never pressed the issue too much and alot of time has passed but they decided not to report this to the Gardai for their reasons which I've never asked but appreciate its an incredibly sensitive issue.

I still see the effects of this very regularly almost 25 years later.

I can't deny it, it eats the fcuk out of me.

Only thing I can say for every one that goes to court I'd say there's twice as many getting off with it. Court and all that's with it is turbulent in itself

It's not as binary as that. I wish it was. But alas it does affect me, in ways I'll not discuss further, but I certainly wouldnt appreciate the flippant "bothered to deal with it" remark if I were the victim of rape.
