Refund: Can the store give you this without you putting the card in?

As per the title, I had to go return a pair of jeans today and asked for a refund. The store said no issue and scanned the receipt from the transaction through. Another one popped out saying nl accepted and they gave me this receipt which showed a -€XX (the amount due for the refund).

I said that's odd as I never put my card on their machine to get the refund. They said you don't have to and it will go back on my account in a few days.

They gave me the accepted receipt and said if it doesn't to come back in.

This doesn't sound right. Thoughts?

Yes. The card insertion is only if they don't have a transaction reference available to reverse (which is quite common).

Why would the shop want to store your card details. Only creates unnecessary work for them.

Some don't, I know a place who throws out all the merchant copies of they credit card details they take in, all the numbers on it, expiry ect . Crazy

I meant that usually when I'm getting a refund I have to put my card into their machine to get the refund but I didn't do that this time.

I understand what you said. More why a company would keep your card details on system when they don’t need to. I think even Aer Lingus got rid of that. Just an unnecessary risk

They don't have your card details in this case, only the reference required to tell their merchant to reverse it.

I can do a refund for any card purchase in the last 6 months with a simple reference number.

Doesn't matter whether it's a physical or online transaction.

The physical receipt has a barcode, the staff can simply enter refund mode, scan and approve. Job done.

Neither the cashier nor the business have the card details. They have the transaction number and possibly a proxy for the card number.
