Probably asked a million times but as I can't seem to search for it on the new site is this a straight substitute or a new licence.Im going 17hmr to 223 for same reason fox and winged vermin.Tried ringing local fo but he's on break for 10 days so I'm thinking it is a suitable substitute and was going to go that route.

I have 2 years left on licence so that's why I was hoping to save a few Bob.Also is it a big deal licenceing a 223 or are they treated the same as any rifle.Im hoping as I've done the air rifle,2 22lr,17hmr it should be seen as a natural progression also have semi automatic shotgun.Thanks.

They are both unrestricted rifles so thats a plus, but as one is a centrefire rifle and the other a rimfire this could be used as grounds to demand a new application.

So in short the answer is, no one can say for sure.

    I've seen guys getting swaps from a 22lr to a 308 then I've seen guys get refused a substitution from a 243 to a 6.5 rifle.

One thing I will say is, at least in my district, they are tightening up on the requirements for substitutions. So if its not a direct substitution with little to no difference(s) between the current firearm and the one being sought, they are seeking new applications. IOW if its not a (example) 22lr to a 22lr then its a new application.

You can submit a subtitution, or wait for the FO to return to check. If it requires a new application then you've lost €52 worth of license. You could submit a new application and forego any doubt, but as your FO is away and it won't be processed until he returns why not wait to check with him before doing anything.

Yeah the rimfire to centrefire could be seen as stepping up in power by a huge amount so new licence could be looked for.

I was hoping for a substitute as they come faster and with the fox mating I could make a good go of clearing a few.If I apply for new licence it could take the 3 months and I don't like to shoot pregnant or nursing fox as odd as that might sound.Maybe like you say wait and talk in 10 days.

Well new application or sub it'll be 10 days until he (FO) is backs o nothing happening till then.

The only time I conld not do a sub was from a unrestricted license to a restricted license.

Did an air rifle to a rimfire rifle without a problem. But then I must say my FO is the best.

My district they will do a sub from rimfire to centrefire so long as the purpose remains the same.

So you want to go from a 22lr rimfire to 223 centrefire, with the 22 currently licenced for target shooting, hunting and pest control and the 223 for the same they will do a sub so long as the game being hunted is the same(ie foxes).

Mind you, they still take 1.5 months to do that sub, so not much faster than a new licence.

Similarly to clivej they won't do a non restricted to restricted or vice versa.

Unfortunately entirely depends on your district.

Talk to your FO and explain the situation that you need the 223 quickly, and they may be able to help, either by putting it through as a sub or expediting a new licence.

Never forget, the end goal is zero firearms of any type.

S.I. No. 187/1972 - Firearms (Temporary Custody) Order - Firearms seized

S.I. No. 21/2008 - Firearms (Restricted Firearms and Ammunition) Order 2008 - Firearm types restricted

Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2009 - Firearms banned & grandfathered

S.I. No. 420/2019 - Magazine ban, ammo storage & transport restricted

Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2023 - 2023 Firearm Ban (retroactive to 8 years prior)

Similarly to clivej they won't do a non restricted to restricted or vice versa.

I think that the Pulse system may not allow this or even visa versa!

Unrestricted to restricted cannot be done under any circumstances as they are different licenses in that they have different processes.

I have seen a restricted to unrestricted as a Super can authorise an unrestricted, but for a sub "up" (unrestricted to restricted) it would require a Chief Super, hence its a new application.

put in a new application and keep both? a trade in/ resale is a waste of money. you'll miss the hmr

Probably right re losing money but I feel I'm getting a fair price for my hmr.I got hmr for rabbit, Grey's and fox.Rabbits all but disappeared here so didn't shoot 1.The Grey's are always that bit too far for the hmr and the feckers know it.Fox I've gotten all the ones that I could call into 80/100yrds and that gave me chest shots as they were the only shots I took.

There is still a huge amount of fox that sat out 150yrds plus just not coming in so the 223 should be able to deal with them.Ive always huge numbers of fox as nobody shoots them anymore and I'm backed on to thousands of acres of scrub bog.

Was talking to new fo yesterday appears we have 2 now and he said a substitute was fine as it was a rifle for rifle and although centrefire it was a small centrefire calibre.

He rang me which was nice for a change as I had left email requesting that they ring when available.Id assumed emails were never answered,I was wrong.

My FO is extremely professional and on the ball. There was a lad here years ago and you'd have a path worn in to him and him a shooter and all.

First they came for the socialists...
