That's the end of Tim Paine, can't say I'll miss him.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Hard to keep up with all the scandals in cricket at the moment. So Tim is gone. Not to the most endearing fella and his record not too flashy either. Lucky to survive two home series defeats to India. Will they give it back to Smith? Talk of Cummins maybe.

In other news, AB de Villiers has announced his retirement from all cricket. What a great player he was. As talented as anyone to ever play the game.

Not a way you'd like to see any player's career ended but Paine is done after this shambles - what was he thinking? His batting or wicket-keeping didn't merit him a place he was being picked because he's the captain and he wasn't great at that either. It seems Cummins is stepping up - they say bowlers don't make great captains but in this case, Australia's strength is in their bowlers and he's worth a shot IMO.

So West Indies are set a target of 397 from 91 or so overs on the final day..

4.36 per over from the outset... not impossible in 2021 you’d feel...the only thing against them really being a day 5 pitch....

but...after 30.4 overs at lunch WI are 65/2... 2.13 runs an over is the run rate...

    a pretty unlikely get.

Outragous feat by Ajaz Patel taking all ten wickets against India. Only the third bowler to ever do it after Jim Laker and Kumble.

Ended up bowling again only 28 overs later after New Zealand were blown away for just 62. Siraj excellent as well as all the spinners.

Historic performance by Patel - taking all 10 wickets is a rare feat.

Only caught snatches of the India v NZ series, impressive win in the second Test for India, NZ badly missed Williamson's batting in the test but it probably wouldn't have made a huge difference to the result.

Now the Ashes are about to begin - 3rd and 4th best Test teams, pretty evenly matched but Australia favourites given they're on home turf. Mark Wood looking to 'stick one up' the Aussies is a bit silly at this stage, we'll see. Don't see it being 5-0, anyway an outcome that was thrown about. Looks like the weather may intervene in Brisbane, Adelaide is a day-night where Anderson should get some joy if he's fit. Perth has been withdrawn due to Covid, that's a bonus for England as they never win there. I'm thinking 3-1 to the Aussies...any thoughts?

    Burns goes 1st ball!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭MFPM

Malan is gone now for just 6...Eng 11/2.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭MFPM

And now Root, out for 0 to hazelwood...big wicket...Eng 11/3.

Stokes comeback gave hope this could be a competitive series. Cummins and Hazelwood said no. Tricky conditions it has to be said.

If Nasser Hussain never went into commentary and his Gabba toss wasn't brought up every day, would Root have bowled first. Seemed a no brainer, green pitch and muggy with rain forecast. Couldn't have gone much worse.

interesting critical eye being cast on the umpires who seem so be not so much of a mind to call no balls.... for that many to be missed in an innings and days play is dreadful.

South Africa up against it at Centurion. Needing 305 to win, they are 22-1 at tea. Tricky pitch, Bumrah and Shami wasting no delivery at all. Elger was born for days like today, first time seeing Keegan Peterson bat and looks solid. After a month of watching England, it's nice to see.

74/3. SA were doing ok until Van Der Dussan just with the worst leave in history, ball crashes three quarters way up off stump… minimal deviation off the pitch, never should have left it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

94/4 at stumps… Mahaheraj bowled by Bumrah from the last ball of the day…. I know he’s the night watchman but that will inject a great deal of confidence to the Indians. They have to be favourites now..

211 runs required tomorrow…. No big deal the runs, but the four wickets down will make it a big deal…

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Rain in the forecast so it might save them. Great application by Elgar, rode his luck a bit as anyone would on this kind of pitch against some great bowling. Priceless having players like that. Bavuma in next can do it also, that partnership will be the key to the game.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

Elgar is tops. A proper test batsman.

50 more runs on the board and a wicket more, I'd give SA shot but looks like India will wrap it up if the rain doesn't intervene too much.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

Yeah it looked a bad leave at first but there was a bit of late swing there, plus the small deviation, along with Bumrah coming in wider. I think it was a bit of top bowling.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Just even on the initial line and length I thought too risky not to play a shot.

QdK has retired from test cricket for SA. Big loss.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Citing family reasons. Fair enough. Bet the real reasons are more board related. Be interesting to see if he turns up at next year's BBL now. This frees up a move there. Will easily be the biggest overseas if he does.

Yas Rana put a tweet out saying at his age Gilchrist had played only ten tests. Had the talent to be the next Gilchrist. Six hundreds averaging 39 falls short but still very respectable.

Ross Taylor retiring as well after New Zealand's summer. Another great career and often underrated and underappreciated. He will leave a gaping hole that New Zealand will find hard to replace.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Great career. Just got on with it after the messy way they took the captaincy off him. Had a bit of a renaissance after his eye surgery.

Devon Conway's arrival will help fill the void. They have two big players to replace as BJ Watling retired after the test final.

New Zealand vs Bangladesh is underway… New Zealand are 2/1 after…. 9 overs…. Bangladesh bowling gun barrel straight and accurate…

    run rate 0.22222

young has faced 21 deliveries and still on 0

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Taskan has bowled 5 overs, conceded 2 runs. One of them a no ball.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Runs coming easier now. Ebadot looks a level below Taskin and Shoriful. Typical NZ green pitch that plays nothing like a green pitch.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,413 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Bangladesh making a good if careful reply to New Zealand’s 328…43-0. NZ bowlers not looking very potent, the Bangladesh batsmen though a little conservative but that’s to be expected…

as I post they lose their first wicket to a poorly played shot to a ball that was nothing more then a full toss…Wagner takes a good sharp catch off his own bowling…

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Bangladesh have had two very good days. Didn't see that coming at all. Pitch is very flat now. NZ are well short of their usual high standards. Maybe missing Williamson. Still expect them to turn it around. A good spell from Jamieson or Wagner could run through them quickly.

I expected the NZ guys to turn it around too but Bangladesh are playing out of their skins…360/4, leading by 32 runs..
