Our ambassador to the Netherlands in there as well.

One would expect regulations and a criminal investigation, but this is Ireland....

The opposite. They shut down gyms and swimming pools and outdoor sports. They also characterised gym users as a certain unvaccinated type.

I don’t think it will be as tough as January 2021.

One positive aspect of the current situation is how it has drawn out and emboldened people like John, who in pre covid days, were generally left to fulminate in their own spaces, with few paying any heed to their occasional outbursts, somewhat like an Iclandic volcano.

I regard it as positive,as the rest of society now has a good clear view of the "curtain twitchers" and fear infused folk who,by and large tend to feel threatened by excessive freedoms.

It is a valid question as to what part of the World they will feel safe living in,when the "Pandemic" inevitably fizzles out of it's own accord.

They will require a small space as their numbers will be of little consequence, but they will be noisy, which makes someplace like Spike Island a location worth considering ?

To be fair, this is not an anti-restrictions thread per se,but with the passage of time,as mankind slowly regains it's sanity,it is moving towards a far healthier attitude to the line we're still being fed.

Thankfully the "Freedom to Post" bit also directly encompasses the "Freedom to Resist" which as yet, continues to be valued by many on here.... 😉 👍️

There have been diverse opinions from the outset, however once the Emergency Provisions of Sec 31A of the Health Acts were invoked, these people had to either remain silent or risk social and professional "consequences" for their refusal to comply.

The Irish Medical Council were to the fore in "advising" Doctors as to their "duties" in relation to this compliance, perhaps not surprising given the make-up of NPHET and it's various sub-teams.

Currently Science itself, particularly long proven elements surrounding Virus development,is establishing it's dominance over the Scientists, particularly those who hogged the limelight during the matinee performance.

It is equally interesting how,for the last month, the Western Science fraternity, aided & abetted by it's adoring Media supporters have chosen to downplay and contradict the very clear reportage from Gauteng,RSA on the Omicron situation, choosing instead to double down on their cabal of useful Modellers and Statisticians to hammer home the WORST,WORSTER and WORSTEST outcomes which are guaranteed to befall us if we don't follow the "guidelines".

    They have been caught out.

BBC reporting that the UK have high hospital COVID numbers because of recovered people not being discharged over the Christmas period

Putting aside the fact that this is a ridiculous excuse for any health service to have in 2021 - do we think this is being replicated here? 568 in hospital at 8 this morning, can we expect to see a drop tomorrow?

You mean you hope that Ireland has the exact same ridiculous excuse of any health service also ?

Likely yes. Today would be the first normal day of hospital operation after a four day weekend.

I'd say for sure. Lots will be discharged now, for the past four days I'd say there were basically no discharges at all. Or very few anyway.

For once I hope our health service is more of a joke than theirs and we get a bigger reduction per capita announced tomorrow than them

The almost complete refusal of the established media to cover the South African experience regarding Omicron is surely something worth covering of itself ?

Why would a "Good News" opportunity be so downplayed, even ignored,by a media which has left no misery tale untold over the past 2 years ?

Are they reporting to direction ?

Either way,the Omicron tale needs to be focused on and explained more thoroughly to the greater public...

What has been remarkable in the intervening weeks — despite the very clear data trends and statements of practitioners like Dr Angelique Coetzee, head of the South African Medical Association, that the variant was mild in all groups — is how slow other countries have been to accept this as fact. Sir Patrick Vallance and Chris Whitty, the UK’s chief scientific and medical officers, seem to be the last to admit what has been evident to most observers for almost a month: namely, that Omicron is much milder than Delta. With numbers in UK hospitals rising, a degree of caution is of course understandable, but the refusal to acknowledge the evidence from South Africa has been odd.

The most common response aired across various elements of our "Serious" media tended to sniffily point out the "differences" between the RSA and us developed Westerners...something which tended to blatently ignore some very obvious counterpoints...

It is true that South Africa is a very different country to the UK, with a younger population and a different profile of prior immunity. But the population also has a major obesity problem, poor metabolic health, widespread HIV and had been hit relatively badly by previous waves of the virus. So the idea that ‘just because Omicron has not done much damage in South Africa it could still be devastating in the UK’ was always hard to believe.

The UnHerd article is interesting and the first I've seen to openly refer to the odd reasoning for our "Science" to ignore and downplay South African "Science".......I wonder what could be behind that ? 😎

They havent given the numbers yet - usually means one of two things - either they are extremely high or they have fallen dramatically in the hospitals - No discharges for the last 4 days so Id say we`ll be around 450 or less in hospital and ICU will be around 90.

Heard somewhere around 16500 positive swabs today - so either way even if hospital numbers are falling off a cliff it`ll be the same doom and gloom. Studies are showing that Omicron cases dont necessarily translate into hospital numbers but our useless lot spout the usual bullshit that the next 2 weeks are crucial!!!

Time to stop counting cases and concentrate on hospital numbers.

To be honest,I have far more regard for this Civil Service group in their display of indifference to the "restrictions",than for the many more who lapped up the entire "Public Health Emergency" stuff in totality and then rush to demand even more !

Doubtless there will be large scale demand for their dragging through the streets in a tumbril, but I,for one won't be throwing any rotten fruit in their direction.

If anything,I'm heartened to see that there were normal people, doing normal things all along.

    Fair play to yiz

UK reporting 183,037 cases but interestingly this includes 5 days of figures from Northern Ireland, curious this as at least three of those days were reported on rte bulletins unless I'm mistaken, regardless, shocking numbers .

PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS have confirmed an additional 16,428 cases of Covid-19 in Ireland.

As of 8am, 568 people were in hospital with the virus, 93 of whom are in intensive care.

I was off a bit on the hospital numbers - nice to see ICU is staying steady though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,983 ✭✭✭Red Silurian

Yeah I'm specifically referring to hospital numbers, we've about 200 more in hospital now than we had on Christmas Eve so I'm conservatively guessing a drop tomorrow of 50. Today's figures have been out since 8:30 this morning

Likewise today's 16,500 cases is probably a build up from the last 4 days which should probably have been closer to 10k than 5k

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,884 ✭✭✭Chris_5339762

Worldwide, they know people will go nuts if they find out that it is milder, and that it'll go down quickly. So I think they are keeping quiet. Also, there is limited data on how many hospitalisations you'll get from old people; there aren't as many in that part of the world.

But it is looking reasonable so far.
