I want to move on from using Sky. We are not making the use of it we used to an no point in paying for something when we are now getting out viewing from other sources (i.e Netflix/Disney etc). The only advantage is convivence. that's about it. The only thing really sky is used for is recording the soaps......

So i want t look at what other options there is.

We would still need to get terrestrial TV to get the soaps (RTE/BBC/ITV etc)

Possibly even to record them...but there is catchup services

What I am thinkin is maybe Saorview/Freesat box w/Recording for the terrestrial TV and maybe Firestick for the streaming services.....

    Are there other options?

FreeSat is proprietary software so there is no such thing as a Saorview/FreeSat combo box. However there are many Saorview/FTA satellite combo boxes available. The main difference is that they need a little bit of work to setup initially. A good example is the Zgemma H7S https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2057971250/zgemma-h7s-guide/p1

If you had SkyQ you may need to change the LNB on the dish as the Q one is not directly compatible. You will also need a terrestrial aerial for the Saorview Irish channels as they are not FTA on the UK satellite. Depending on your location you may get away with an indoor aerial or one located in your attic if needs be.

Going to jump in here if I may as its on same subject.

Gerry , when you say LNB may not be compatible is there any way to find out?

At present I have an active Sky Q subscription that I intend to cancel. Also coming from the dish is a feed to an old Sky HD box. Both working fine. Should I be able to replace the Sky Q box with another old Sky HD box and expect it to work?

    Thanks.

@ShatterProof That sounds like you have a Hybrid LNB which has 2 connections for the Q box as well as 4 conventional outputs for non-Q use. You should have no problems connecting a non-Q box as the Q ones revert to normal when a normal box is plugged into them. If you look at the LNB it should have a total of 6 outputs on it.
