Woke up to snow on some of the mountain tops in Mayo today and a little bit of frozen graupel in the lawn after a few overnight wintry showers.

Was a cool and fresh day with lovely blue skies and a few passing wintry showers that seemed to weaken as they pushed inland on that north westerly breeze.

One of those light passing wintry showers in Central Mayo this morning.

Above, the dying embers of a wintry shower as it fizzled out. It looked more impressive as it approached from beyond snow capped Nephin in the distance but it was not long before it eventually faded out.

Was doing a bit of rambling about later thIs afternoon near Pontoon. Got caught in one moderately heavy shower with the odd flake in it. The pic above shows another one of those showers pushing on through to be followed by a clearance as dusk set in.

    Met éireann this morning

Tonight - A band of rain will reach the west coast soon after midnight, extending quickly eastwards and turning to sleet or snow for a short time in parts of Ulster.

    TOMORROW - THURSDAY 6TH JANUARY

Heavy rain will clear from eastern counties during Thursday morning with sunny spells and frequent showers following from the west. Showers will turn increasingly wintry as the day progresses with colder air pushing in from the Atlantic. Falls of sleet or snow are possible in some areas by evening, mainly across the western half of the country. Afternoon highs of 4 to 8 degrees but turning much colder by evening time with a fresh to strong and gusty southwest to west wind.

Thursday night -Cold and blustery overnight with widespread wintry showers, many falling as sleet or snow. There is a possibility of hail and a few thunderstorms in Atlantic coastal counties. Minimum temperatures of 0 to 3 degrees in fresh to strong and gusty westerly winds with gales on Atlantic coasts.

    Met Éireann Weather Warning

Scattered showers of hail, sleet and snow, and icy stretches, Thursday evening, Thursday night and Friday morning, will lead to hazardous travelling conditions in some parts. Showers will be most widespread in the west and north of the country where some accumulations are likely. Isolated thunderstorms will occur also.

    Valid: 16:00 Thursday 06/01/2022 to 11:00 Friday 07/01/2022

    Issued: 13:05 Wednesday 05/01/2022

GFS 12z showing a dusting of snow across most of the country tomorrow evening into Friday. These charts usually go way overboard with Atlantic snow so I would take this with a pinch of salt. Snow looks possible across Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim and then another band from Limerick to Wicklow. Once again coastal areas and Meath/Dublin/Kildare seeing very little from this with showers much more isolated in nature.

Gem looks more believable with snow cover mainly confined to high ground in the northern half of the country.

Icon probably underplays it for high ground with only the mountain peaks seeing lying snow.

GFS is bringing a more prolonged period of snow for South Leinster, East Munster and South Connaught first thing Friday morning.

We need to watch the track. Let's see how the ECM sees things later.

Some parts of Donegal, Derry, Tyrone, Fermanagh and Antrim see a period of sleet and snow on Thursday morning as that spell of rain its the colder air. Could cause some problem on the morning commute.

The EURO 4 is going for a rather widespread falls of snow across the country Thursday evening into Friday morning with it showing the risk of accumulations in many areas especially the northwest. The ECMWF model will be interesting to see if it shows that feature of the south of the country on Friday morning.

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,708 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

ECM has that feature now across the southern half the country first thing Friday morning. Just a tad south for the Dublin area but that could easily change.

For now it looks like southern half of the country away from Atlantic coasts and the far southwest has a good chance now of waking to a few cms.

Let's see how it evolves and whether Dublin comes in to play in the next few runs.

Manager of my local spar going around the shop telling all the customers “big snow due tomorrow so stock up”.

I didn’t say anything but Didn’t sit well with me. Some of the elderly customers were genuinely worried.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,185 ✭✭✭pad199207

That’s barbaric. The increase in the alcohol must be hitting him hard already.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,596 ✭✭✭✭Beechwoodspark

He’s what’s known as a local character he often goes around the shop advertising special offers etc to customers

But I felt this was a bit much. Lot of folk don’t follow weather too closely and him hyping the snow up won’t help

The RTE weather forecast looked promising for snow so I came into the weather forum to see how the ramping is going. I'd love a big snowfall.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?
