I think that Brendan O'Connor is the only RTE broadcaster who has held a balanced, reasoned and calm discussion about Covid throughout the pandemic. No drama, no hysterics, no fear mongering - just good open discussion.

It's also clear that the narrative is changing and we will see a change in policy soon after the mild Omicron wave subsides. We need to ensure that we do reclaim as much normality as possible after 2 years of chaos. As one of Brendan's guests said; its must easier to drive in than reverse out.

Day 2 of Omicron myself. 2nd positive Antigen. Feel less tired today and slept like a baby - sore/tight throat remains and swallowing is a pain but Nurofen Plus quickly takes care of the headache. No other symptoms yet. I find mince pies help too! 😊

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

This comparison is striking. Amazing really and really shows the difference with Omicron.

    "an added danger".

Would you ever stop and listen to yourself. Grown men and women talking about the "danger" of a teacher closing a window because the kids are cold.

Imagine being an adult and saying that with a straight face.

The vast majority of people I know who are doing home delivery now either always did or are doing because they have Covid or have to isolate.

Back in March 2020 lots of elderly and vunerable had there shopping delivered due to the fear of Covid but from what I can see these people are back our shopping, going for coffee, visiting family because they are full vaccinated and they don't feel they can't do much more now seeing there fully vaccinated and they want to get on and enjoy life.

People don't seem overly concerned about the latest strain at all really.

There are about 1.02 million vaccinated 60+, and between 10000-13000 unvaccinated (allowing for rounding of hse vaccination %s)

If the people in ICU are primarily over 60, and roughly evenly split between vaxxed and unvaxxed, then the unvaccinated over 60s are ending up in ICU at between 77x and 100x the rate of vaccinated over 60s. That would just be further evidence that people aren't ending up in Icu "with covid" but because of it

Sorry if this line comes off as attacking.... but who's they? Where are they? And how many?

I'm only asking this because I keep hearing people say it's the covid hermits prolonging this. But then I look towards my family, social circle, even people I work with and I know zero people who are afraid to go outside. In fact, I know a couple who have mentioned to me "microchips in vaccines" (yes, that level of oddness) who refused to get them and they are still out and about.

Yet I keep hearing people going on about these hermits. It's all their fault. Just how many is there tho? Or is the line becoming a starting point to rabble on now?

Last I checked on boards you don’t have to be qualified in a topic to post on it. However, I can see the point the poster is making.

if memory serves me correctly generally when a person is re exposed to the exact same strain/variant of a virus their immune system should recognise it and respond very quickly and person shouldn’t get sick (obviously this can wane over time and some people are immunocompromised). Now as we all know from Covid many viruses mutate over time (some more then others). This can lead to our immune system not recognising it as a virus we have previously been infected with and we may increase our chances of becoming sick while our immune system fights off the virus.

it’s too early to tell if we can be repeatedly be reinfected with Omicron more then likely at least some of us can be. Realistically we probably will all be getting Covid several times in our lives.

83 in ICU, 26,122 new cases, looking very good for St Patricks Day Parades being green lit.

Family of 4 all close contacts on 28th December. Tested positive on 29th December (antigen). Tested negative 4/5th January (antigen). 3 of us got appointments this morning for pcr tests. Wife 4.20pm Mullingar. daughter 5pm navan. Me 5.20pm ashbourne. We live in navan. Don't think we bother

83 in ICU is the lowest since early November. Total of 273 in ICU of which 83 are Covid related. And we still have people screaming about numbers and "danger".

2 weeks of 10k+ cases every day now. ICU has gone down in that period.

This is all over now bar the shouting. Roll on the penny dropping with the politicians and the realisation that the misery of restrictions can come to an end. 2022 is looking fantastic.

Well over 10k per day since Xmas. The lack of testing made it impossible to quantify. Probably 40k+

If there's 83 people in ICU today, you're probably looking at sub-50 by start of February and under 25 by start of March.

We’re genuinely starting to look to be in a really really good position now. Have thought that a lot throughout the pandemic but this feels like it

Which makes the ICU figures even better, someone will be going ICU if needed whether waiting for a test result or not, St John's will be bring them in.

Better wait till it's below 10 to be safe, we can still have a meaningful Halloween.

They are people who readily admit they don’t want to leave the house because if this deadly virus.

People like this, have a goo over this Twitter feed for example. Like I said, ain’t no vaccine going to help them, I feel sorry for them really but this one has literally nearly 10k followers.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,399 ✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

It makes the ICU numbers seem unreal. Beyond my expectations and I am an optimist. It's great to see all the natural immunity in the population too. Great timing too. 2022 will be great.

By Halloween, Rabies will have become more transmissible with a delayed asymptomatic phase, and most if not everyone will be infected and defacto zombies by then, so enjoy yourself in the meantime, live, laugh, brains.

Why do some covid questionnaires ask if you've been out from the country in the past two weeks? At this stage in the pandemic, it's nonsense to be asking that. In the early days of the pandemic travelling abroad was seen as high risk for exposure and infection. At this stage, it's every where at home in Ireland. You don't need to get on a flight for an exposure.

I get what you're saying. But with regards to that woman on twitter... "patient Experience specialist" (wtf) ?

How do people listen to people like that.

The overwhelming majority of physicians got vaccinated with a tiny number of holdouts, so what you are really saying is “the particular icu doctor and not the overwhelming majority of those who have taken the vaccine should be listened to because they hold a contrarian view that ties in with my own”

And “pogrom”. There are many idiotic statements here but some just top all others.

Thise recovered from Covid and vaccinated are treated the same as those who have been boosted as the preponderance of evidence is vaccination and recent recovery has the strongest protection against transmission and serious illness, which even though much rarer do still occur

I also feel for the first time since the start of the pandemic that we are actually not in a bad position restrictions wise compared to most other European countries. I thought when Omicron arrived that the government would panic and go into an unnecessary lockdown like the Netherlands did. Stupid though the 8pm hospitality closing time is, it's nowhere near as bad as Germany's new rule where you must be vaccinated AND have a negative test to go to a bar or restaurant. Their case numbers are a fraction of ours. And there's no talk of mandatory jabs like in France, Italy, Germany and Austria.

Out of the significant number of EU countries to reintroduce testing requirements for vaccinated travellers, we were the first (and so far only) country to remove them. Last year we were by far the last to reopen travel.

Oh look, raind dropped in to insult and take a contrary view to me. Never would have expected that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,781 ✭✭✭mohawk

You make some interesting points actually. Some of our European neighbours are taking much stronger actions then us since Omicron came about and they don’t seem to be in any rush to change them.

You have some heightened view of your own self importance. I don’t give a sh1t who the poster proclaiming idiotic statements is and will always address the statement not the poster.
