A new year and a new coach for Ireland with the South African Heinrich Malan being appointed to the role. He won't take the job though until March at the earliest and interim coach David Ripley will be in charge for Ireland's tour of the West Indies. It's been a difficult couple of years for Ireland with very few positives.

The year ahead then is really only a guide as Covid and financial considerations will likely dictate the fixture list.

January 2022 - Ireland Tour of West Indies

    Matches : 3 ODI, 1 T20

February 2022 - T20 World Cup Global Qualifier Group A - in Oman

Matches: 7 T20's (1 Large Group Containing, Bahrain, Canada, Germany, Nepal, Oman, Philippines, UAE)

Top 2 advance to the T20 World Cup

    Apr-May 2022 - Ireland Tour of Zimbabwe

    Matches : 1 Test, 5 ODI and 3

    Jun-Jul 2022 - New Zealand tour of Ireland 2022

    Matches : 1 Test, 3 ODI

    Jul-Aug 2022 - Afghanistan tour of Ireland 2022

    Matches : 1 Test, 3 ODI, 2 T20

August 2022 - South Africa tour of Ireland 2022

    Matches : 2 ODI

Sep -Oct 2022 - Ireland tour of Bangladesh 2022

    Matches : 1 Test, 3 ODI, 3 T20

    Oct-Nov 2022 - T20 World Cup in Australia

Warm up game v Jamaica today. Handy enough win for Jamaica.

No Stirling for first ODI saturday. Hard to see anything other than a Windies win.

Need to avoid bottom spot in the super League table to be spared any chance of relegation

Thats a tricky enough group for the T20 qualifier. UAE, Oman, Nepal and Canada all capable of beating us sorry to say.

Yeah, there are no certainties with this side anymore. For a number of years, Ireland went toe-to-toe with Afghanistan but that time is well and truly over. Hopefully the new coach can develop a more consistent side and bring through a few more to replace the old guard.

First ODI against the West Indies starts at 2:30pm today and is live on BT Sport.

Ireland: Porterfield, Balbirine, McBrine, Tector, Campher, Tucker, Dockrell, Delany, Adair, Young, Little

West Indies: Hope, Greaves, Pooran, Brooks, Pollard, Chase, Holder, Shepherd, Smith, Joseph, Hosein

Simi Smith and Ben White both tested positive for Covid this morning and miss out.

Ireland won the toss and will have a bowl.

Great catch by Delaney to cap off a solid opening by the bowlers. WI 18/1 after 6 overs

    36/1 after 10 overs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,595 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

McBrine gets the second wicket. 59/2 now 17 overs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,595 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Another! Campher gets Hope and it's 60/3 18 overs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,595 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

McBrine gets his second 62/4 after 19 overs

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Excellent start this. Just need to keep chipping away.

Need to keep taking wickets tho. All too often we get in a good position only to allow the opposition back in

  • Registered Users Posts: 144 ✭✭fergiesfav

I think I've seen this match before. Just can't take advantage of good positions!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Brooks and Pollard putting on a partnership now. 120-4 after 30.

  • Registered Users Posts: 144 ✭✭fergiesfav

This'll finish at 280-300. All too easy now, the last 10 could be carnage

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Carnage started already. Pollard with 3 sixes in a row against McBrine.

  • Registered Users Posts: 144 ✭✭fergiesfav

Brutal captaincy. Why would he take McBrine off when he did, he set him up for this. Different match safe result, game after game after game. They'll crumble now to 160 all out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 144 ✭✭fergiesfav

This is also some brain dead bowling, bowling length when the Windies are in slog mode.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

WI probably looking towards a total of around 280 from here.. maybe better considering who is at the crease and how well set they are… we looked at one point that we could restrict them to about 250 but this partnership is going too well… don’t look like taking a wicket.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,595 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Partnership broken but the damage well and truly done

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

62/4 to 230/5 killed us… not enough wicket takers.

Looked like Delaney ran too far at the ball instead of stopping and taking it lower..

we get lucky with the lbw, just clipping umpires call… hopefully that might cost the West Indies some impetus and save us 10 or so runs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Brooks gone lbw. Looked a bit high on first view, but just clipping. Need to run through the tail now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Yeah from replay I didn’t give that lbw any chance, strange the graphic had it clipping being such a short pitched delivery but we’ll take it…

only a single of the 46th, we’ll take it.

young takes care of Shepherd, nice, needed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Shephard now gone for 2 after a huge hoick into the air. Ireland having a good last 20 minutes or so.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Holder edges next ball straight to the fielder and Young is on a hat-trick!

50 ODI wickets for Craig Young.

Next ball is let go by Smith. 246/8 off 47 overs now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

    Don’t park it there !

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Ireland take the 9th wicket. Need to wrap it up quickly as they are well behind in the over rate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

tucker should have taken that having got there.

re: the over rate, there have been all through the innings a lot of conversations between both batsmen and between the fielding side… umpires didn’t seem too pushed about telling the batsmen to get on with it.

costly over, 12 of the first 4. But as I type 5bth all takes the 10th wicket..

270 the required total. 5.38 the required run rate.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

West Indies all out for 269.

That partnership of 155 was a real killer for Ireland.

Disappointing considering they had them 63/4, they pulled it back a little but they really need to sort out overs 20-45, they're too easy to bat against in this spell.

Josh Little is head and shoulders above the rest. Adair can be good but bowls too many boundary balls, releasing pressure. The rest are very very hittable in international cricket.

Bug task to chase this without Stirling. Think Balbirnie will need to get a big hundred.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

I’d back us chasing 230/240 but with our long tail and these West Indian quick lads… it’s doable but… I don’t know.

  • Registered Users Posts: 144 ✭✭fergiesfav

We had a better shout turned when he was roughly 35. It looked out to me. Different game if that was given

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

    5.38 is the RRR.

doable if the lads get off to a solid start keep dot balls to a minimum…

trying to find a happy medium is always our downfall…. Start too conservatively and the RRR will be up over 7… start flashing the blade carelessly and we’ll be 3 down inside the first 6 for not very many…

hopefully we get off to a good start and don’t end up behind the 8 ball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Disaster of a start. 1/1 after 1.5….a pretty poor shot played to an average ball.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Steady progress as Ireland are 40-1 from 12 overs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

McBrine has had to retire hurt after failing to recover sufficiently from a blow to the helmet.

    71/1 from 18.

199 needed from 32 over. 6.21 run rate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Rate is 3.9. Too many dots… by and large they’ve put the bad balls away all be it they’ve continued the habit of good shots finding the fielders but the required run rate over 6.4

why with only one wicket down are they not going more attacking ? They’ll leave themselves with too much to do. They don’t learn.

just a single off the 21st.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,595 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Picking it up a tad now. Tector getting away with a couple of edges. Balbirnie has made 50

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Yes a few more attacking shots and boundaries… need to make hay the next 9 overs, keep this rate manageable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

After I post the above Tector gently dabs three deliveries in a row to gully…then Balbernie leaves a short wide one… negated the good over previously.

50 up for Tector at a good rate.

    109 off 90 is possible

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

109 from the last 15 with so many wickets in hand would be straightforward for most of the top teams. Let's see can Ireland pull this off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,595 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Needed another 7 overs out of balbirnie you'd have to feel

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Poor shot really, a cutter but a lazy swing as opposed to a controlled stroke …

4.64 is the current run rate, we need 7.4..

putting ourselves behind the 8 ball, yet again..

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Tector plays a shot that I guess thought might clear the rope for 6 but he has to clear the fielder first, he didn’t…

Ireland batting themselves out of contention.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,595 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Feck it anyway. Really didn't need to lose the two of them close together

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

97 from 73… think our moose is nuked….

Campher playing defensive to a straight one that was asking to be driven then providing catching practice to Hope…you could not make it up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 144 ✭✭fergiesfav

Christ above, they are determined not to win. Every time whether it's batting or bowling they throw away promising positions. They'll limp to 220 now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Yep… it’s the same craic… two singles off the 41st…and only 4 wickets down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

4.42, is the current rate. 11.5 needed…. Delaney blocking…then almost runs himself out. Bowled next ball.

  • Registered Users Posts: 144 ✭✭fergiesfav

Absolutely pathetic display. Rabbits in headlights once again.

It's not even boundary hitting that's the problem. They cannot rotate the strike. How many dots balls in that innings, there's probably 60-70. Turn half them into singles and the chase is easy. Instead they tip away at 3 an over, blocking away, not bothered about getting a single and keeping the scoreboard ticking along. Once the rate goes above 7, they panic and slog because they haven't the technique to hit boundaries.

From 63/4 in the field and 170/1 batting to lose this badly is disgraceful. There's 4/5 there that I'd put on the next plane home.
