So after 10 days of isolation I was finally free to run on Sat. As someone who hasn't been sick in a good few years(thank god) Covid knocked me for six! The 1st few days were pretty bad so lying in bed seemed like the best option anyway. Then I started to feel better but the isolation was horrible. I really just wanted to get out to run at this stage. I could literally tell you what NOT to watch on Netflix!! Some films & series i'd be thinking WTF am I watching, would keep watching hoping it would get better & most of the time it didn't!! I then started watching Team Ingebrigtsen as recommended on here & I really enjoyed it, quite a fascinating program. Got to watch the program called Anne about a mother losing her 14 year old son at Hillsborough, such a moving story, a mothers love is endless in the search for justice, would highly recommend it. Unfortunately I started to feel bad again so was really worried it would affect my ability to run again once my isolation was over, my appetite wasn't great either & my love for chocolate seems to have disappeared(not a bad thing really I suppose) I feel like I have lost weight, I don't own a scales so not 100% sure but from looking in the mirror i'd say so, anyway goal now is to build back up my nutrition and hopefully keep the chocolate away!

    Sat - 8th Jan 2022 - Easy Miles - 4.47 miles

Didn't get out for this till the afternoon due to a lot of procrastination & well a little fear of how it would go. Started off very steady then just went at around my usual pace. It felt a lot better than I was expecting tbh but I could feel the effects of the last 10 days not running & being ill. I never really looked at the watch but only had pace, distance & time on it so it was only when I got home I realised my HR was too high for an easy run, ah well knew I would keep a better eye on it tomorrow.

    Sun - 9th Jan - Easy Miles - 4.37 miles

Again it was the afternoon before I got out. Nice day for a run. Have missed running so so much! There's so much we take for granted, just simple everyday tasks. I felt a better today & kept an eye on my HR, a very enjoyable easy run listening to my 12 year old son's playlist, kept it on shuffle & was happy with each song, like me he has quite a varied taste in music!

    2022:

I don't have any real goals just yet. My main goal right now is to build back up to where I was & even at that I'm not really sure where I was if that makes sense! The end of 2021 hasn't been ideal running wise but i'm willing to work hard on getting myself back. I think there are a few factors I need to work on like dealing with hurt again in a race & not letting my mind dictate to me that I just can't do it. I've always thought of myself as a determined runner & good with talking myself around to finishing out a race well so that is what I plan to work on for this year. I have a few races booked but the main race for me is Bohermeen half marathon in March, hopefully I can run this race well.

One thing that I can say for sure is that I am just so happy to be back running😊

    Welcome back!

Just in terms of embracing the hurt in races, does the EIM have hard sessions , ones where you are suffering a bit?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,007 ✭✭✭Lambay island

Great to see you back running 🙂. I shall hopefully see you at Bohermeen again this year!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,501 ✭✭✭Laineyfrecks

    Thanks!

Yes it did for the 5k training but not for the half or full. I did a couple of tougher sessions before my illness & that will be the case going forward. I like the EIM training, it really suits me. S has asked on numerous times if I want to go back to conventional training to which I have said no. It's more about getting my mind on board & this is only something I can do for myself.

Sorry to read you have had such a tough year

Looking forward to reading your log this year and always interested to see how other runners deal with embracing the hurt and racing. I find I’m great at training - never miss the pace or a session then useless in a race . Have you any links or further information on EIM training as that sounds very interesting .

    Thank you.

I bought the book as it explains everything you need to know & has different plans to follow for each distance, it's called Easy Interval Method by Klaas Lok.

Here are a couple of links that might help you just with general information about the way of training, hope it helps!

Might as well update while I'm here...

Had a bit of a sore knee after one of runs last week, actually made me limp towards the end of the run. Did the usual stuff when I got home to help it get "better" thinking & hoping it was just a niggle. I felt good the next day, knee a little stiff but nothing at all like the day before so I decided to head out for my run. Not even 10 mins in & the pain returned, I decided to just head back home as it wasn't going away. Asked around for a bit of advice & also recommendations for physio's as I have been blessed to only need one years ago after a football injury. I booked the physio as recommended by L (cheers) & decided to rest until the visit.

Went to the physio today & I actually think he just got a great laugh out of me, he didn't even start the exam & I was so tense, he said "my god what have you heard about physio's?" After doing a few simple squats etc for him he said it was clear my glutes were weak especially on my right hand side. He massaged my quad (if that's what they want to call this torture that was inflicted on me), he kept me chatting while I edged my way practically off the bed in excruciating pain... I've had 4 children, I would consider myself to have a decent pain threshold but this was on a different level! Anyway I've to stay off running for 5 days, do daily exercises to start strengthening the glutes & foam roll daily. After the 5 days it will be a very gentle introduction back which involves walking & running, gradually building it up to 30mins of a full run. I am a bit gutted but I will do what I have been told as my main aim for the year really is to run DCM, everything else was just a bonus. Obviously this means the Raheny 5 mile & Trim won't be happening (so if these are transferable & anyone would like them they are more than welcome to them. I am really hoping to be able to run Bohermeen but it will no way be a PB attempt.

I'm not gonna dwell on it, sure it happens to the best of us! I will listen to my body & the physio & hopefully I'll be back doing what I love soon enough!

It always the glutes. Or the hip flexors. Or something. Anything but the actual knee!

Too bad about Raheny etc. Hope it clears up.

Sorry to hear that E. You're having a bit of a run of bad luck with the interruption over Christmas too. Hopefully your luck is due a turn. Good to have the long term view with DCM. Everything will build to being ready to train for that.

Out of interest, the foam rolling - did he want you to focus on the quads in particular?

Sorry to hear about the injury E - very frustrating I'm sure. It seems like you caught it early - fair play for pulling the plug on that run so quickly when you knew it wasn't right - it's easy to plough on for a few more miles, or days, and make matters worse.

Hopefully you will be back to regular running before too long - at least your main target race for the year is many months away, so the timimg could have been much worse.

I've no idea where everyone finds these torture specialists - I've never felt more than mild discomfort at the physio. Maybe I just have exceedingly high pain thresholds (unlikely 😊), or else I need a new physio!!

Hi E, sorry to hear about the injury. If you need a local physio I would highly recommend Stephen Braiden ( Muscle Fix ) beside Brookfield Health Centre. I had similar issues you have mentioned above awhile back and found him fantastic

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,501 ✭✭✭Laineyfrecks

Yep my hips were mentioned also! Thanks a mill D.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,501 ✭✭✭Laineyfrecks

Yeah I am indeed but I suppose it could be worse!

Yes for now the main focus is my quads to be rolled daily but hopefully once I'm back running I need to foam roll everywhere at least twice a week.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,501 ✭✭✭Laineyfrecks

Thanks A, yep it is quite frustrating but these things happen! Yes having my main target a good few months away is most definitely a positive. Lucky you!!! I was & still am in agony when I touch my quad & the foam rolling is so sore but obviously I will persevere... maybe yours just aren't as tight as mine are so taking that as a blessing also!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,314 ✭✭✭Bluesquare

Sorry to hear about the injury . Fingers crossed for a quick recovery .

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,582 ✭✭✭Swashbuckler

By the way I know what you mean about the pain. I had ultra tight quads mainly due to the fact they were taking up the work that the glutes weren't doing so they were dominating. The quad work wasnt the worst at the physio but ill never forget the elbow into the piriformis - good lord that had me jumping out of the table. The good thing is, if you have a good physio and you get those quads loosened out and the glutes firing a bit, then things will settle again pretty quickly.

Jaysus feels like so long ago since I logged!

So the last few weeks have been mainly building back up to get me running continuously & consistently. I am doing the exercises the physio gave me every day plus my foam rolling. I have been looking at a few different S&C classes locally so considering maybe getting 2 done a week. I am now running every 2nd day, just easy runs at the moment & currently up to 40mins. I'm really enjoying being back running...well maybe except for today as I am extremely hungover & have no voice left after a fairly lively hens in Carlingford with 38 other women🤣 A great weekend was had but glad to say I only do it very occasionally! I have been really good with not drinking much over the last while & my diet has improved a fair bit too so hopefully that continues. I am signed up for Bohermeen but still not sure what I'm gonna do yet! My plan for now is just to keep running and hopefully have no flare up of my knee. My main goal for this year is to run DCM well so I really don't want to do anything to jeopardise that.

Oh I also won an Irishman running abroad Singlet which was designed by Sonia O'Sullivan & Jarlath Reagan, happy days🤗

Great to see you back up and running and more importantly enjoying it, long May it continue the easy running and the S and C will set you up nicely for the rest of the year

    Mon 21st - Rest day

    Tues 22nd - 40mins easy

Set off for this using only HR on my watch & went on my usual route. Everything went well, just a slight stiffness(if thats how i can explain it towards the end, but not sore).

    Weds 24th - S & C class

My daughter talked me in to joining where she does her classes. I have trained with the trainer before & find him very good, always corrects form etc so I was happy to give it a go for a month. I knew my daughter did early classes but didn't realise it started at 6am👀 Up at 5:30am, that's not even normal, I was half asleep getting to the class &the perfect advert for bed hair🤣 Really enjoyed the class.

    Thurs 25th - 40mins run

Pretty much the same as Tues but a lot colder🥶 wrapped up well & enjoyed getting this done. Was afraid the DOMS might affect me but thankfully not!

    Fri 26th - S &C class

Another very early class👀 In fairness this wasn't as much of a shock to the system as Weds was! Really enjoyed the class & took it at my own pace with the trainer helping. Have signed up for a month initially to see how it goes. My running comes 1st so will reevaluate 2 full classes a week when I'm back training but for now I'm hoping it helps! Also still doing the exercises given to me by the physio.

    Sat 27th - 1 hour easy run

Set out to the PP for this, was honestly so so happy to be running my "long" run in the park, it really is the little things 🤗 A lovely morning for it & lots of runners out which was great. Was feeling very relaxed, felt that little tightness at about 45 mins but just concentrated a bit more on my form & it went. Was thrilled to get back to my car after an hours run, feels like I'm finally building some consistency 😊

    Sun 28th - Rest Day

Watched the Liverpool match at home, jaysus my nerves were shot🙈 had money on Liverpool to win & Salah to score but sure just thrilled they won in the end, my poor kids were shocked at the profanities coming from their mother🤣

    Good to see this!!

Somehow I doubt your kids were that shocked 😋 🙈

    Mon 28th - 40mins easy with strides

Set out for this run on my lunch break as I was working from home today. The rain started just as I headed out but I didn't mind as it was a lot milder than it has been - even got to wear my shorts for the 1st time in forever, absolutely loved the feeling of running in the shorts again. This run felt great from the start, I decided on the speeds for this & actually I have found myself reaching for them a lot, they are a great overall runner & even with over 500 miles on them they still feel great. I am going to use the endorphin pro's now for my training as they are just sitting in the box & I have a few choices now for a race runner so I might as well get my use out of them. Delighted to be able to do some strides today with no ill effects. As I eased into the 1st one Eye of the Tiger came on so the mood was set, it felt great to feel some speed again, there's just something about your form when you run faster, I honestly felt like Kipchoge😂

Tues 01st March - Rest Day

    Weds 2nd - S & C class

My daughter isn't well so I had to put on my big girl pants & go to the class on my own! On the plus side I was able to book the 6:55 class which felt like a way more acceptable time to get up😉 Really enjoyed the class again & I do feel like they are helping.

    3*1k

Another wfh day so got out at lunchtime. A very wet & windy day but again happy to be progressing slowly. The shorts & speeds on again today. The 1st 2nd 1km felt good just stayed within the HR zone, the 3rd is always the one that slows me down because of the terrain & the strong winds didn't help but I was happy to go as slow as needed to finish this out as I was supposed to. Happy to have this done!

    Thurs 3rd - Rest day

    Fri 4th - 40mins easy with strides

In the office today so wasn't able to get this done till after work, great to see the brighter evenings coming in & this was a beautiful evening to run. Noticed my HR going quite erratic so checked my watch & it wasn't connecting properly, decided to just ignore it & run by feel. The strides again were really enjoyable. Changed the battery in my HR strap & my watch is still not picking it up, have tried a few different things & nothings working so sent an email to Garmin to see what they say!

    Sat 5th - S & C class

A beautiful sunny morning, class went really well, getting the hang of stuff I had gotten a bit rusty on.

    Sun 6th - 70mins easy

Set off to the PP for this early. Was another beautiful morning out there but quite chilly if the sun went in but now that the shorts are out they will stay out! Parked at the papal cross carpark & set off on my run. Lots of runners out which was great to see, lots of hellos, smiles & waves but not all 3😉 Passed by C out running with his crew & he got a good morning(just cause I know him haha) I was running nice & easy, was happy with the consistency of each mile & so happy to just feel injury free! I passed by C again on the S bends but was in a world of my own( not like me at all) but did manage a hello as I coped him! As I was running through the park with the sun shining I felt so grateful to be able to do this, with all the things that can get us down it's hard to sometimes realise all we have to be grateful for❤️

22.6 miles for the week, I'll take that! Some might think I'm being too cautious coming back from my injury but I feel it's whats best for me. The main priority for me is not to get injured again, now I know nothing guarantees us not getting injured but I don't want to do anything that might increase my risk. Getting out to run is the most important thing to me, I was not in a good place at all when I wasn't running so I am so happy to be able to get out slowly but consistently for now.
