Hopefully its not fast food and if you want eddie rockets there are plenty close by, whatever goes in there they need to protect the main street, how paddy power ever got permission for their gaudy livery is beyond me, its something the english protect very well in certain locations, we should follow suit.

Ironically what dalkey could do with is a large eat in coffee shop, most of the coffee shops are takeaway or very small, nothing particularly family friendly.

i dont love Cafe Nero but i would wager one would do quite well. Something like a mini dunnes, or Avoca or similar would also go well.

For some reason i thought Barnhill stores were going to put a cafe upstairs, must have imagined that.

Boojum has 17 restaurants across the island of Ireland while Zaytoon are only 4 strong. Not exactly multinationals the world over by any means. Yes, there are 5 Boojum branches in Belfast which is technically the UK. However, it isn't exactly overseas. Even by typing this, I cannot believe I am pandering to the xenophobic nonsense.

As @josip rightly pointed out, Dalkey is hardly devoid of chains. It's got a Circle K at the entrance which is as multination as it gets which I do NOT have a problem with. The hatred which Dalkey has for chains is rooted in champagne socialism in spite of the fact that the bulk of the wealth in Dalkey is the result capitalism. I have zero problem with people running a business (be it local or international) in a hamlet, village or town as long it brings jobs to that locality. In my opinion, use of the cliched term "heritage town" to object to chains is a form of obscurantism.

I was only pointing out that Starbucks and other coffee chains were proactively and vigorously ignored by the local community on the basis that they were chains that threatened "local" businesses. This is a fact. Take it up with the Dalkey Village community group, I don't live there so it means jack all to me. Most prospective retailers will look back at that history and likely run a mile.

I never said anything about petrol stations or supermarkets and the reference to them is irrelevant because nearly every petrol station or supermarket in urban Ireland is a chain or a franchise.

Borzas has been desperate for a good few years now. The current owners must have plenty of money. I've never known a chipper to ignore custom like it. And it's been a disappointment any time it has been open.

Diep is a Celtic Tiger relic and has been "old" generic thai type food for a decade now. Not sure they've ever changed the menu.
